Butoh dislocates the mind and relocates the body...it is an essential art form that needs to be disseminated across the world! Thank you ...from Japanontology

What can be more tragic than wading into evil and not give any thought. Its what is going on here.

So basically it’s a “dance” for people who didn’t make the cut as real dancers due to huge lack of talent, and now they succeed because of shock value? And someone actually understands this? I call BS! Thanks RU-vid, this is guaranteed nightmares for a month!

Wtf kind of take is this lol. It arose out of the surrealist movement when it came to Japan, and many of the people who pioneered it were incredibly talented dancers who wanted to tap into emotions and techniques that all other dancers shied away from. It’s very hard to do this form successfully. Just because it’s not mainstream pop dancing doesn’t mean it isn’t worth artistic merit. Also, it doesn’t succeed because of “shock value”. I’m not sure if you’ve ever attended one of these performances, but this is a sad statement to hear because it shows that you really haven’t given it a fair chance, even if it isn’t to your personal taste.

Butoh is failure. But is loss. Butoh is unpolished. Butoh is unpopularity. Butoh laughs at your shallow ignorance. Butoh is shallow ignorance. Butoh is painful laughter. Butoh is your nightmare.

Unfortunately this snippet missed a lot of the wider cultural context of the dance as well as it’s stylistic origins and meanings. It builds upon and breaks traditional Japanese dance and theatre movements. It arose post WWII as a way to deal with loss, isolation, and anguish, as well as rebel against society and expectations. The fact you and others don’t like it isn’t just beside the point. It revels in unconventional and disturbing movements. It is supposed to make you feel uncomfortable watching it. It’s really a shame they didn’t touch on the cultural and historical background, or have a Japanese person explain it.

@@--enyo--I definitely agree, although OP jumping to the conclusion that it’s a stupid art form for failed dancers is still insane. There are some other really good videos on RU-vid that talk to Japanese dancers with more knowledge on its history that explain what you’re talking about tho.
