American houses tend to use lumber framing with drywall backing, so on interior walls there are literal cavities of air between wooden studs (on exterior walls they are obvs filled with insulation. Brick houses are more common on the east coast but almost nonexistent on the west coast due to the entire thing being seismically active. As for concrete its harder to insulate and at this point the entire industry is built around wood construction.

Yeah, they kinda are, that’s why I prefer living in old houses/buildings. My apartment was built in 1930, and it’s as solid as a rock (plaster, brick). You’d break your damn hand trying to go at one of the walls lol.

I’m from finland and currently live in a buildinh that has stood here for over 100 years and is in excellent condition. Obv new buildings aren’t as sturdy but most houses also use wood as a key element. Basically a lot of it is because of the traditional way of thinking of a house as something precious as well as the need to have insulation for the long harsh winters😁
