@ about 4 minutes. Washing machines. I bought one just like what you showed but without the spinner side. It lasted maybe 2 or 3 years before the main bearing was shot. As you said, repair was impossible. The part didn't would be imported and cost the same as a new machine. I replaced it with a better model with a spin dry side. Of course now laundry in being done by hand again due to no electric. I saw nearly the same type washer/spin dryer in Thailand in 1999. Chinese of course.

I've been to the Philippines 4 times...when visiting my wife's family, I always hugged her grandmother. I had to stand on my knees to hug her, and I think she got a kick out of me getting on my knees to hug her, but I think she really liked it because she would hug me back and hang on for an extra second or two. She passed away 3 years ago and I miss her alot. She was a tough lady that smoked her cigarettes with the lit end in her mouth.and would knock em back with the best of them.

Surprisingly, I had little trouble finding people to fix things in the Philippines. I did a few projects there in the past. There is actually a lot of skilled labor available very inexpensively in the Manila area. Welders, plumbers, and such were not nearly so costly as in the U.S.

@@craigsphilippines466 yes, definitely something that has been lost in American culture. My best example is when I was on the roof of my camper and accidently knocked my ladder over. (and stupid me left my cell phone inside). About 15 minutes later a guy was walking by and I asked for help with the ladder. He said "Sure, for 40 bucks." I told him no thanks, I'll figure it out myself, and the A$$ actually moved the ladder further away. Ended up having to hang over the side and drop off. yeah...fun times.

Also, not trying to be loud and obnoxious in public. I really love the cultural values of the Philippines which are very understandable. After living 12 years in the Philippines, the biggest thing I have noticed , the laws and ediquette is the same as in most other countries, but people dont really care about them, the laws are not policed all that much so people just do their own thing and it works because the Filipino culture is very strong on respect and saving face, so having those two things in society it means no one is going to do anything too outrageous, the Filipino way is to do the right thing unless you have been disrespected. Foreigners think all Filipinos want to rip them off and take your money, but this is not true, its just they look at us as rich and 90% of the time we are, so they just feel we can afford to pay more and we can, most of the time. Its very practicle thinking and its the thinking that doesnt exist in western society, everyone is spoiled, they have too much and expect a lot and want more, Filipino logic is simple and structured, I love this way of thinking and to be homest if not for the corruption, then the Philippines would be a rich country, but I guess in my eyes it is a rich country and if wealth is measured by integrity and strength, then the Philippines is the richest country in the world.

I have been all over your amazing country. My experiences has changed me and made me a better man, The Philippines saved my life , literally., I will never have a bad word for the Philippines , whatever a foreigner complains about I just see it as a reason for the true purpose of your people, it is an after effect of what makes the people who they truly are, if the Philippines changed to the way foreigners say it should be, then its just another America or Australia, The Philippines is what is , as soon as something is changed then the ripple effect creates other changes that we might not want, leave it as it is.

Thank you, Pea. This is the kind of stuff I LOVE to learn about other cultures! The little everyday little things that most people don't really think about when they do them because they've been doing them their whole lives. It's just habit for them. Like your mention of watching where you step. Country folks here do it to make sure they don't step in something a dog or cow left behind from their behinds (please excuse me for the pun), but city folk aren't used to doing that. I always have to watch my step because of my gout (started up when I was 25) and arthritis (started when I was 18). I don't want to step on something that might further hurt my feet, make me twist my ankle and take a tumble, or step in something that will have to be cleaned up later. I'm sorry to hear about the Filipino attitude about hugs. I love hugs and only get one every once in a great while. I'm also dismayed by kids in the Philippines not having very many toys. I was a poor kid, and I had only a few toys (probably why I used to go a little overboard for my students around Christmas time and buy them toys and candy to pass out during our classroom Christmas party. I taught in a school located in a low income area.) But I had a great imagination and played around outside a lot (until I discovered the joys of reading books). Can you believe we used to have a commercial here in America about parents who spent a lot of money on toys for their 2 year old daughter, and she ended up playing with the big box all the toys came in instead of the expensive toys? Lol. It seems imagination is the best "toy" a child can have. 🙂

Nothing is more fun that putting a toy into the hands of a child that’s never owned one ❤️
@jimgilbert9984
@jimgilbert9984 2 года назад
@@TheFilipinaPea That's why the US Marines, big chain grocery stores, and local TV news sponsor , support, and promote Toys For Tots during the Christmas shopping season. It's a program in which people buy new and unused toys and drop them off in big boxes located in grocery stores. The toys are for children that otherwise wouldn't get any toys for Christmas. And it's not just for small children. People are reminded to buy things for kids who are in their teens, too. The Marines have the best part of the program - they get to deliver the toys a day or so before Christmas. When I would pass out the "goodies bags" as part of my classroom Christmas party, I would always make sure there would be a couple of toys in each bag: yo-yos, cars, bouncy balls, dolls, small stuffed animals, etc. The goodies bags also had cookies, candies, and small coloring books with crayons. Then there would also be competitions, with the winner of each one getting another toy (we would play enough games so that everyone got an extra toy). I always loved playing Santa for my students. During the rest of the year, my students could earn plastic coins for good behavior. They could save up the coins, and when they had enough they could buy toys from the classroom treasure box (or they could buy books from the classroom library - they really loved the books that taught them how to draw manga). Plus, I kept old-fashioned games on hand for special break time: pick-up sticks, jacks, a Hot Wheels loop-the-loop set, checkers, super tic-tac-toe, etc. Besides being the weird teacher, I was also the fun teacher. I couldn't help it. I wanted the kids to want to come to school because learning was fun (I would make the lessons as intetesting and as much fun as I could). There's no reason that learning can't be fun.

sorry I'm late on viewing...sometimes life gets in the way LOL. Some interesting tidbits. Another reason why I think I'm going to feel more at home in the Philippines. Just some observations based on personal experience and life. Big thing you mentioned was the Philippine people don't seem to hug as much as a greeting. I have always been like that. I just flat out do NOT hug another woman who I am either not related to (and unfortunately none are left with us) or dating/attached. For me it's just a respect thing. And it's caused more than a few incidents in my life while living in the Southeast United States, where hugging is more accepted than handshakes. But I also know that it is also probably the reason I might be more physically affectionate in private with one I care deeply about. Some would call it "smothering", but at least my love has expressed that 24 hours filled with hugs and cuddles (and not necessarily leading to "other" activities) is something she VERY much welcomes!!! As for the toy price issue, my biggest thought on the price difference is maybe supply and demand. so few people in the PH can afford 7 USD for a "piece of plastic" as opposed to the USA/Europe, let alone 40 USD or more, that not at many of the item will be shipped there (despite the closer location). So fewer numbers of an item will push the price up even more. Here in the US, we are currently experiencing that issue with supply shortages and too much cash in the economy. Lastly, remember a lot of toys, even though made in China, are still considered USA/European products and are subject to both countries' trade agreements and laws. Hence another cause for inflated prices. There's my 2 cents (I mean pesos LOL) worth of thoughts for today. Looking forward to the house helper video. As always, good work and take care.

I really enjoyed this video. Every country has its own culture and even different areas in the same country may have a different. I’ve been to many countries in Asia. The trick is relax and enjoy the culture. Just because it’s different doesn’t make it wrong. You are correct I very seldom got the pat down entering a mall in Philippines but I did get the pat down entering the airport and it was by a female. Interesting and kind of nice. I surprised you didn’t boil the fish bones after you picked them clean and make soup. So wasteful Miss Pea. That soup would go well with tuba.

Tuba is such a social thing in Leyte. Something I didn’t see much on Luzon. I call it “coconut pi**”. Everyone we visit offers us some so we drink some to be social and not offend anyone. It makes my lips and tongue numb. We have a small farm with plenty of coconut trees so one of my wife’s family often wants to make it. You think 250 pesos is cheap? We buy it for 150-180 pesos/gal. We never sell any because my wife’s family drinks it all. For a party I bought a bottle of top shelf rum. They turned their nose up at it and drank the tuba. Cute video, Pea. Your pirate ending put a smile on my face. Thanks

I love the culture, it helps the outside world to see just how simple life and the things in life are. Granted prices are much higher for luxuries than in the US, the point is you can eat, enjoy the outdoors, get what you need at the store in a very simple way. Behaviors are more conservative in that they aren’t flashy and wealthy types, they are there for each other in a heartbeat, neighbors will feed you, it’s the definition of a true community who doesn’t have a rich economy but rich in love and hospitality and great fullness

I was laughing when you talked about the traffic in the Philippines. One of my long time FB Pinay friends is a traffic cop. We always joke about that. I tell her I am afraid to go to the Philippines because she might give me a ticket, she jokingly acts very strict, and tells me just not to do any violations. If we ever have a dispute she warns me that I am committing a violation, and instead of fighting, we always laugh. It sounds like the alcohol Filipino's sell on the street is only wine? We are allowed to make wine & beer in the West, with little regulations. All of the strict laws, are about "moonshine", which is "distilled" alcohol. Wine & beer are safe to make and drink, but distilled alcohol is very dangerous to make, and if made incorrectly, dangerous to drink.
@dragongrazer7620
@dragongrazer7620 2 года назад
Here in Sweden it is legal to make distilled liquor for personal use. but it is illegal to sell it to others. I the past pretty much every other household had their own distillers in the countryside. Because you know, life is hard, so you need to make party juice to make life more fun...(also, they often became alcoholics...😉😅)

Miss Sweet Pea - thank you for your wonderful video's. A lot of vloggers speak about how much money is needed to retire in the Philippines .. I would like to speak to a much greater issue that faces all of us .. Medical costs and care. I am 74 and fairly healthy, but my greatest fear is having a major problem and not being able to get proper care. It is, in fact, the primary reason my wife and I don't move there, even though she is a Filipina and we would love to. This is a dilemma that many retiree's face .. even though I can't afford to retire comfortably in the US, I can't in good conscious retire in the PI either. I would like to see a movement in the Philippines to rectify this situation because it would benefit everyone. For those of us wanting to live in the provinces .. a major medical problem is a killer .. and if the problem doesn't kill you, the money needed will.
