How sweet of you to relived the memory of Lola Ana. Sharing your story and showing the video how you met her is moving. You two looked having a good time. Based from the comments, she passed away already - my heartfelt condolence to the family. As for the current climate, it sure is scary. Based from the newspaper, it looks like the worse is yet to come in America. I work in a hospital but not directly dealing with patients. I work alone in a cubicle, what frightens me though is after work. According to the newspaper, there are so many ways a virus can get into a person. There's what the call "droplet" coughing person can distribute the virus even from a distance because the virus can go with the flow of the air or wind - airborne. Or, the droplet can stick to one's clothes bringing the virus home. Proximity is encourage anywhere you go. It's so eerie looking around. Everywhere is empty. Reminds me of the movie Apocalyptic. But what surprisingly though is during distress time, some positive things will come out. The lockdown is doing good to the community. According to the statistic, crime is down 46% in my area. Almost no accident on the road. According to the atmospheric personnel, air quality tremendously reduced because fewer cars are on the road. No smog and pollution around. There are so many speculation when the pandemic ends, let's cross our fingers that hopefully soon. Planning going skype? That would be good. You should do it. Here's an adage: Age is just a number, carries no weight. The real weight is the Impact. The truth is you can do it at any age. Get up and be willing to Leave A Mark - that's who you are. Stay safe.

They don't know their age and their birth day stories like "there was a typhoon when I was born", "we were in hiding from the guerillas whenI was born", etc. It's so amazing how they face and enjoy life, so positively. When she responded to your inquiry on her age--seemingly and happily unaffected by her lack of knowledge of it--and in sharp contrast to your surprised, baffled, and to some extent, saddened reaction...just goes to show the two separate and different worlds each of you comes from. East versus West. Modern versus Indigenous. It became a reciprocating culture shock. Unlike in the West, aging in the Philippines and other Eastern cultures is considered a badge of honor. Just because one grows old does not diminish their worth and importance. Hence, the great respect for the elders. Nursing homes are non-existent, especially in rural, isolated areas. And to put one's parent/relative into one or an outside equivalent is most certainly frowned upon in the Philippines. That's because custom and tradition dictate that the young take care of the old (who have raised and taken care of them) if and when the time comes. It's a given. It's a duty. Those who could afford would hire an in-home caregiver/housekeeper, an arrangement which still allows the elderly to be taken care of and be surrounded by family. A multi-generational household is more the norm than the exception. To cut my point short, Lola Ana's answer and reaction to your eurocentric question about age just goes to show that perhaps what's often highlighted upon or deemed important (to keep tabs on) in Western culture, does not necessarily mean it gets the same focus--and relevance--with native peoples who live simple, isolated lives up in the mountains of the Philippine Cordilleras. To many who have lived in that environment all their life, that's simply--their world, their cocoon. I have to commend you, though. You do get the point--and the dynamics. Power on!
