THE JAMA MAPUN ARE KEEPING THEIR CULTURE AND TRADITION ALIVE THROUGH WEAVING...
What an amazing and enlightening experience to visit Janeth Hanapi and the women weavers of Barangay Erok Erok on the island of Mapun in Tawi Tawi. I fist met Janeth in Manila at a cultural weaving exhibition, and decided then I would love to visit Mapun. And so I did. In this video we take a look at their incredible "Tipo" weaving. For the Jama Mapun, not only is it a reminder of their identity, but it also is a big part of their lives. I visit a house, and see how the banig are used for sleeping... yup, you can see them in homes all over the island.
Travelling across the Philippines to the remote island of Mapun to see this... and to support the community!
POWER ON!

Fun fact: it's probably forgotten even by the Sama and the Mapun themselves, but colorful banig like these were THE SAILS you see on the famous vinta. They were the sails of ALL our boats throughout Austronesian countries. They were made from woven pandan leaves (sometimes buri or nipa too). Literally banig woven into lengthwise mats, stitched together. It's a very very ancient technology, and what allowed our ancestors to settle islands across two oceans.

Mapun island is 181 sq km or 181,000 hectares - Boracay is 10 sq km or 10,000 hectares - Each island hosts 30,000 people but Mapun is 18 times bigger - The Phil govt must do more to develop Mapun - they need their own airport and a modern port - Mapun people are resourceful hardworking people - they deserve more from the Phil govt. -

Kumar even took a picture of the eagle flying 🦅 It is looked like it is on 3-D animation that you edit it 🦅 And eagle is the national bird of the Philippines 🦅 And they are making weavers made from coconut leaf and they color it 🌴🥥 It is there cultural way making those weavers. And you learned a lot of language across the archipelago of the Philippines. It is really a great experience on you. And there vegetable in Tawi-Tawi is water spinach or swamp cabbage AKA kangong 🌿 And they had a butternut squash and an eggplant that they put oyster sauce on it 🎃🍆🦪🍶 And there dish are mainly fish and chicken a pork free zone because there are muslims in Tawi-Tawi 🐟🍗✔🍖🚫 And in Tawi-Tawi they had there imported goods from Malaysia. They even had a poster of the Malaysian Nestle Ice Cream and Kumar copied it 🍨 And the muslims in Southeast Asia came from Indian and Arab merchants. And the Christianity in the Philippines came from Spanish. And Israel introducec Christianity in Spain that is why the Spanish introduce Christianity in the Philippines. And there is a Bisaya from Davao City. And the Visayans in Mindanao are originally from Visayas they came in Mindanao in 1900s.

How do they speak good English if they live in a very remote part of the Philippines?
@andimanila
@andimanila День назад
Actually, according to the United Nations, the Ph is considered a country with English As A Second Language, not just English As A FOREIGN Language. English is a huge part of our curriculum. Unlike other countries, English is the medium of learning for everything from Sciences and Maths to Arts and Civics. So actually a lack of familiarity to English is the exception more than the rule. 😁
