I don't think Shay's statement would've caused negative reaction in the Philippines if she did not do the voice acting for Trese a year or two. That project was a huge deal since it's the first Filipino made anime that was shown on Netflix so the production wanted an all Filipino crew behind it. Her accepting that project but later on denying her Filipino roots made Filipino people think that's she's only Filipino when it is beneficial to her.
Trese wasnt made or animated by filipinos or any Ph based animation studio, it was animated by a studio in california and by another studio in south korea. A lot of filipino animators, and studios were insulted by the blatant false advertising of the animated series. Not to say it isnt filipino, but it wasnt the first filipino anime, my little pony is more filipino than that. no ph studio touched that. Not to take away the artists' achievement but It shouldve been advertised as the first filipino komik adaptation by netflix. Calling it first filipino anime is a huge insult considerimg we have artists and studios based in PH that actually animate scenes for popular anime and netflix animations.
It was actually funny when Vanessa was crowned to be a cultural ambassador. Locals even said that Sandara Park (who didn't have a drop of Filipino blood) does a waaaay better job at representating Philippines and its culture. 😂

This had the subsequent effect of it being SURPRISING to us when our country is then recognized. Thus this is why Pinoy Baiting is so prevalent. Secondly, we might reject our country, but the same sentiment is not true for our family and heritage. Working abroad for your family at home is part of the culture. Everyone has an OFW relative.

Oh just saying to clarify, Iloilo is NOT a tagalog speaking province. Im a Metro Manila girlie myself so I had to search but they primarily speak Hiligaynon and the people are called Ilonggo/Ilongga (feel free to chime in if you're from Iloilo!! I only did a google search so idk if this is right). I just feel like this needs to be clarified because there's a big issue with other Filipino languages being seen as inferior to Tagalog even though they deserve just as much rep!! ❤ Just an FYI, thanks for making this vid ❤

Fil-Ams/Diaspora Filipinos who were pretty much born and raised overseas and are of half-heritage, may already be pretty much Westernized/brought up in a foreign culture, and we full-blooded Filipino natives back here at home may struggle connecting with y'all some times (honestly guys, settle the debate already, we are Asians, not Pacific Islanders although we are very much close to the Pacific Region hahahaha) like there's this big disconnect between us and y'all. But regardless, for some reason, there's always this underlying and unbroken connection between us and y'all. Shared experiences and struggles albeit brought up in a different setting and subjected to different cultures and circumstances is what connects us no matter how much "different" we seem.

They make really amazing music! A lot of voice actors from Steven Universe (hard to avoid if you were very chronically online from 2013-2019, a revolutionary western cartoon about gay space rocks) are actually Filipino too! I am black American from Los Angeles,I am happy you made this video. In my 20’s I sold merchandise to furniture stores and many of my customers from the Philippines would buy from me even when they didn’t need it. They treated me like family. My mother was in her 70’s and needed a nurse assistant part time, her Filipino nurse was like family . We have a large family and the nurse would come to our cookouts on her own time. I left California some time ago and don’t know what race relations are like now but in my days I had nothing but positive experiences with Filipinos. Kindness, great singers and international level beauty.
