Well i was a school boy extra player in Goodbye Mr Chips, Petula Clerk was beautiful lady who chatted & let me record her for a little pirate radio station in london & Peter O’Toole played & talked to me when not filming. I can still remember the words of ‘In the morning of my life’ which we sang & due to a audio fault recorded again the following day.

This was also our school song. Sherwood Primary School, Durban, South Africa !! ❤

Every person in the world needs to sing this song every day.

Real talent shows through! Petula Clark has always been a class act and respected her fans. That's why we love her.

So moving. I get tears in my eyes every time I watch this.

I love this version, so subtly filmed and nuanced. I get the tissues out during the continuity announcer and weep from the off, knowing the ending. It became even more poignant when my older sister told my my eldest brother was among Yeovil Grammar School boys drafted in to augment Sherborne Schoolboys during filming. I had no idea and we spotted him in the background of a scene. Happy daze!

Thank you so much for posting this. I searched for a while on RU-vid for it. Petula Clark and Peter O'Toole were perfect actors for this movie. Outgoing vs. shy characters with such love & respect for each other. This is one of my favorite scenes where the boys first realized the kind of person she was & fell instantly in love with her! I love how the boys wind up singing faster to her singing pace.

This film is an example of critics getting it wrong in my opinion. Thy panned it. I on the other hand find immensely entertaining.

The movie is a commentary on the stiff upper lip character of the introverted Mr. Chips and the elite Boys Public School system to which he has singularly devoted his life. Out of nowhere, a vibrant, beautiful and extroverted lady comes into his gray life and neither he nor his school will ever be the same again! Thank goodness. It's (Goodbye Mr. Chips) a great movie of personal struggles, marriage, dashed hopes and social conformity.

And in that sea of dark color and murky dimness, there is suddenly a ray of sun. It's like every bit of light in the room is shining out from Mrs. Chips, standing there in her peach frock and singing like she's at the gates of heaven. Small wonder the boys looked gobsmacked.

Should I ever be a part of starting a new school, I shall lobby for this anthem to be the school song. It makes me happy!

Tremendous Petula

One of my favorite scenes in one of my favorite movies!

I love this scene. It start with many singing with vigor, but they hear a voice which transcends with its beauty, and choose to at first diminish their volume, then to be silent completely to lay hold of the beauty. A wonderful group moment in transpiring when a horrible woman narcissist decides she can't bear the thought of another, far more deserving, having the limelight, and has no qualms whatsoever of ruining things for a multitude because of her petty jealousy. The scene wonderfully captures narcissism.

I just saw the 1939 version of GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS. I half expected this to be the school song it’s so ingrained in my head. But it brought this song back to me. I need to see this movie again. In the original Robert Donat won the Oscar (over Clark Gable, James Stewart, Mickey Rooney, and Laurence Olivier) for the role. Peter O’Toole was nominated. But John Wayne won for TRUE GRIT. Well, we can’t begrudge The Duke for a life’s work. I have to say I like this version better. And I do love the decision to make it a musical. Petula Clark was wonderful.

I bought the soundtrack at 11 years. It has always been one of my favorites.

I taught this song to my class 40 years ago they had a reunion dinner 7/9/11 I was informed that many that attended the dinner remembered the song I will be joining this happy123168class for a picnic in August this song has alot to do with my philosophy of life.happy123168

I would so much like to see the part when Peter O'Toole sings it by himself, softly reminiscing. I thought that was one of the most touching scenes ever filmed.

This version is cut off unfortunately. But it's a wonderful song & the world would be a better place if every person inculcated it into themselves, their children & their nation. Because, as the full version shows, we can each fill the world with love at every stage of Life & be the one to inspire others to do likewise.

Ah. She has a fantastic voice

David - see the movie, rather, and then judge, before hitting the keyboard. You need the complete context. It's a multi-layered story that is set within some rather drab, upper-crust, English schools, where everyone conforms, and yet someone quite ordinary stands up and tries to add a new dimension, to both education and society in a late 1960's space - i.e. by adding some colour to the entire environ. If you've never experienced this scenario, then it is difficult to contextualize.

I always love this scene and marvel at the talent of Peter O'Toole who with 2 slow simple astonished glances portrays the absolute disbelief and shock at what is invading his senses. I can almost hear him admonishing his Katherine afterwards "What WERE you thinking? Do you realize what you've done?" But deep down inside we the audience knows that his astonishment is paralleled with pride and awe at her ability to inspire the students even garnering a "shhh" from head toward his wife. The one thing I truly missed from the 1969 version was the lack of depth of individual students which the 1939 version did so very well. I enjoy every version of this story as it is such a great one. I can't imagine an updated version of this that I wouldn't still enjoy, unless of course it was directed by a 4th rate director on a coke binge. Canuleia.... lol

@joshuaisgorinth You're just hearing the character of the Headmaster's wife, intentionally off-key to make the Petula Clark character shine -- although she really glowed well enough, all on her own. A great little scene, IMO

"American musical film" considering that it's got an all-British cast. Pet Clark, nonetheless, really does know how to light up the screen whether it's this, Finian's Rainbow, or the Muppet Show =)

I really love this O'toole's cofused look at his wife. This is lavable.

To me, the saddest moment in the film is when Katherine is riding away in a jeep to entertain the soldiers during the war. Arthur chases after her, shouting "I've just been made Headmaster!!!" and she replies "I can't hear you! Tell me when I get back!" (spoiler) . . . . Except... she never comes back.

I looked this up after hearing the Mormon Tabernacle choir singing it. I love their rendition.

It's the best thing about the whole remake (which was awful) - but there's something magical about this character's passion, and the way it works through the music.

I read somewhere that the story line was the students did like the headmaster's wife (Petula Clark), judging by this scene, it's not her fault. It suffers from bad directorship of Herbert Ross, explaining the box office failure. Everyone else is wearing black or dark colors, she's wearing yellow. Did he think the audience so bumb as to Not be able to follow the Star of the movie?
