I imagined more subtext in Edward's relationship with his creator. When the Inventor dies I thought his facial expression showed he was horrified, like he was saying "My God, what have I done?" Like when he saw Edward cut up the human hands he realised he should've given him the human hands from the beginning. I think it might've been a realisation upon dying that Edward would end up destroying everything he touched due to Vincent putting off giving him human hands until it was too late or upon dying he was suddenly disgusted by Edward when Edward cut up the human hands perhaps seeing him as a monster like the neighbours did at that point in the movie. While the Inventor did treat him well, I thought their relationship was more akin to an owner and pet than parent and child like in the scene where he tells Edward to smile. When he looked at the robot he made into Edward, I thought he looked sad and lonely than curious as further conveyed by how his castle isolated from the suburbs.
I just realised Rose from Titanic is similar to Kim. Both were with a douche who dictated everything she did. But then they meet an outsider who they eventually fall in love with. So the douche turns on him and then tragedy happens which prevents Kim/Rose to be with Edward/Jack. But Kim/Rose are able to live a long life but still remember Edward/Jack that they're telling their story to their granddaughter. I wonder if James Cameron is a fan.
@gdh1984 good on you, you never know who might be good or bad for you. You did your part, hopefully shes in a better position in life and actually remembers how much you were there for her; and is thankful.
I love/hate this film like Carrie. It's beautiful, has a message to it but so heartbreaking. And just like hearing Danny Elfman's music here, I can't help but cry every time I hear Carries's theme
Oh god, I know what you mean. I watched Carrie around Halloween and I just felt really depressed afterwards. Beginning to wonder if I even like it anymore XD
I just watched Edward Scissorhands and during the whole movie, i knew there was another movie that i was relating it to but couldn’t think of it. Carrie is exactly the movie i was thinking of, thank you for commenting this Iliana!!!!
Honestly, during the mob scene, the song Kill the Beast from beauty and the beast, was playimg in my head; but then I realized the small similarities. Edward-Adam/Beast Kim-Belle Jim-Gaston. But then again, you can say the same with MANY other stories in the past, present, and future.
That feel when half way through beauty school and they start calling you edward scissor hands then you have a flash back to watching this movie and they're asking you why you're suddenly crying
Actually, what you're describing here Beginning from the reference to Frankenstein about how Eddy is percieved and interacted with throughout the film describes a lot of my earlier life. I am way more fasinated than I am sad. 😂😂😂
To add to your point about how Edward is based on Burton himself - I've read somewhere that Burton came up with the idea of a man with scissors for hands when he was a teenager, as a way to express his teen angst. Also, just a little detail, but if you go back to the scene where they show sketches of the steps of Edward's creation, you'll see that he doesn't appear to have anything bellow the belt (and why would he? The inventor wasn't making a sex-bot, for god's sake!), so Joyce would've been disappointed either way.
I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this. You are so intelligent AND funny. I loved hearing your thoughts on the film and your editing is hilarious too. Btw, Jim hits Edward with a fire poker. And your take on Edward's isolation around 7:23 is SPOT ON. Such a great commentary on an equally great film. I also totally understand how you feel about the film. The ending is very sad. And it's pretty dark due to the fact that it starts out so heart-warming and optimistic, only to end in tragedy. But I see the ending as more bittersweet. Edward didn't really have a purpose before he came down to Suburbia. He was just kind of stagnating in his isolation. But after the events of the film, thanks to the love he felt for Kim (and her love for him, in return) he's found a new sense of purpose by making it snow every year, just for her. As sort of a way to let her know she he's still up there, is still thinking about her and still loves her. I think that's really sweet, personally. But hey. To each their own.
The first and only time I saw this movie, I didn't get it and just wrote it off. Now, I only just realized how much I identify with this movie, Edward especially, and it depresses me to no end
I can understand that. It's an odd movie and probably doesn't click with everyone. Hell, I think it was one of those that I had to see a second time before I started to appreciate it.
I really love Esmeralda's dressing gown/robe in this video. I think that she looks beautiful when she's wearing it. Especially at 10:22 and 15:53. You know what I think, I think that a blue dressing gown/robe really suits Esmeralda.
This movie is such a roller-coaster of emotions. The happy parts warm my hearts and the ending destroys me. I do feel similarly to you about thinking that the movie kind of threw in the romance abruptly, it really didn't need it. I think the movie at it's heart is really all about Peg and Edward's relationship. She was so sweet and loving to him and it's kind of too bad that they sort of changed focus from her and Edward to Kim and Edward. But either way I do love the movie (I watch it rarely though cause I know it'll make me cry)
I haven't watched this movie in a long time, probably since I was 15, this reminded me what a beautiful movie it was. So thank you for this Vlog and reminding me of how much I loved it. One of Tim Burton's best movies
Personally, I would say Vincent Price was playing against type as well. His characters always had an air of hubris. Corrupted or downright malicious rather than paternal and benevolent as The Inventor.
It also helps that he wasn't playing a cliche mad scientist. His character was an archetype, not a stereotype. A lot of people get those two definitions mixed up.
Points to you Dena. I've always liked Edward Scissorhands but at the same time I would think WTF? Why scissor's for hands? It was always something that I didn't get. But watching this review I finally get it. An outsider who couldn't even touch someone without hurting them. WOW
Bill: you’re walking down the street, you find a suitcase full of money, there’s nobody around. What do you do? Me: *inhales deeply* tell me....how the hell would he pick it up? Ever consider that?
Your FilmDens/GameDens give me so much life. Lol they're quite the tradition for me! Happy Holidays, Dena!! So glad I discovered you all those years ago!
I know this should be a channel comment but I really like all of your movie review videos. They're entertaining and feel so personal. Keep it up! By the way "Edward Scissorhands" and "Big Fish" are my favorite Tim Burton movies. both of them give me teary eyes in the every time I watch them.
You feeling sad for him is adorbs. Right after watching this I googled "Edward Scissorhands animated" They made a cartoon show just about everything back then, ya never know.
This is one of the most beauitfuly gut-wrenching movies I ever had the pleasure to watch What gets me the most about this movie is how no matter what happens, Peg stands up for Edward every step of the way, I grew a soft spot for her the minute all the asshole neighboors rejected her sales XD such a roller coaster of emotions...
Oh, man, even though you said where you new Peg's actress from, I know I'd seen her from something else, and couldn't quite place it. It turns out that she was the perfect mom, yet again, in The Lost Boys. :-D
I think the reason Edward scratches up the walls and goes crazy is because he sees Kim running to her boyfriend, it looks like she's happy to see him and about to embrace him. Edward doesn't see that she's actually giving him a dressing down. So I think you got that part the wrong way around.
10:06 "My name is not Edward! It's Scissorhands! I am not a human being! I am an animal! Cold blooded!" Sorry, but I like the connections Dena makes between Edward Scissorhands and Batman Returns with Oswald, how in the end they cast off what made them fit into society as something close to humanity.
great points about Johnny Depp's subtle performance. Haven't seen this in awhile, but compared to some of them now, they're unbearable. I kind of wish Tim Burton would change a little just because he's lost some of his uniqueness. But I still liked Big Eyes. Always enjoy your videos :D
What the...?! 4:32 That’s the same guy who played the shitty psychologist in Pinocchio’s Revenge! How did I miss that! And How does one get type casted as a bad psychologist...
So, speaking as someone with ASD, this film is definitely Autism: The Movie. Tim Burton is an undiagnosed Aspie if ever there was one. It was surreal realizing how that clicked together for me after I was diagnosed.
Virgin Mary is usually regarded as not only Mother of God, but also Mother of Humanity, since Edward didn't excactly die for anyone's sins, I guess the symbolism would fit better for Peg, since Edward got the closest thing to a Mother figure he could ever have
So I just realized something, Anthony Michael Hall was Johnnie Smith from The Dead Zone TV show. Would've been funny to see some reference to that show in these videos. 😂
I only saw some cover art pop up when I was trying to find the promo pics. I wasn't sure if it was real or not. Are they any good? Not sure how I feel about the idea.
It's supposed to be like a faerie tale. Not every detail needs to be explained. And for all we know, it's just regular snow and Kim is just imagining that.
Burton's handling of Kim is so awkward and strange now that I have rewatched this movie again. Kim claims that she 'loves' Ed but she doesn't do enough to clear his name nor protect him from the multiple accusations that he had to go through. For example: Edward was told to break into the house, he then took the fall and Kim never truly confessed her involvement in it throughout the movie.... Really odd.
Anyone read the 10 issue comic series? I read them its nice seeing the return of Edward and what happened after this film. But the art style of the comic is very cartoonish like it was made for kids when the original source material is dark.
Ok firstly that the virgin mary with jesus. Second I now remember why I have a hard time going back to this movie...it does mess with your heart and I don't like to cry that much. I always felt this was a story about an adopted child trying to handle a home where he is always look at like a fish out of water. I mean it...changed the idea he had scissorhands to anything. He was raise in a gang...he was an deferent race....lived with an abused family....the list can go on. A new family take him in and well if he goof up the neighbors that where at first so kind becomes rumor feared. i know what that like. ps merry axe mas
Imagine if there was a sequel. that takes place after the events of the flash back. where Edward finally gets a true happy ending... obviously not with the first girl, since we know her fate already.
Both me and my wifey can't manage to watch that movie again...it's horrible to see how everyone is an asshole to Edward. More than a tale of Beauty and the Beast, it's a tale of corruption of the innocent.
mob mentality its the worst, hay Dena I don't know if your a doctor who fan but their was one episode with ten and Donna that showed the mob mentality perfectly just like this movie. I cant recall what the episode was called though and google is being unhelpful
it was good this is true, the best I'm not sure about that and since its chistmass eve I don't feel like having an augument with anyone. peace on earth and good will and all that jazz
alaster boneman Well....to put it bluntly the ending to that manga is..... infamous to say the least..... Essentially people get scared due to demons showing up and essentially destroying the world, then said crowd of now VERY scared and VERY stupid people march upon the female leads house....And well.... h.mfcdn.net/store/manga/2927/05-001.4/compressed/159.jpg?token=b2b63412a223e4b3cd50a55bfa66db59&ttl=1482616800 Yeah...Then they parade around town with her head and chopped up corpse, with the heads of her family members, her little brother etc.... The people in question are not drawn as people at this point, they look like evil shadows that have melted together as one (( just symbolic mind you )) The effect is incredible art wise. The reason for their actions ? Somehow it was her fault all this was happening, and killing her would totally save them all ! Demons did actually give them a tiny nudge into this direction, but the group of people did the act on their own.
He didn't give him scissors for hands. Edward started off as a robot that was used for chopping things, and was gradually being transitioned into a humanoid, and the hands were the last step. This movie is basically a mainstream arthouse film where everything is symbolic. You're trying to apply too much real-world logic to it.
It doesnt matter WHY he has scissor hands, or WHERE he got the ice. The movie is about someone who is different trying to live in a world of normal people and it's told as a bizarre modern fairy tale.
Maybe it's just hindsight talking, but I would've dealt with the tsudo-Kruger claws first. I mean, even if the argument was that they were place holders till he could get real hands, they wouldn't be great for real hand work, like picking things up & such. I mean they work, but in the same way a hand with no thumbs works. Very awkwardly. It's just kinda funny to me. Still, your right. & a lot of people say if a movie is good you can ignore plot holes, & little lapses in judgement. I'm not trying to ruin the movie for anyone, I'm just pointing out little things I find amusing.
you know, I have a way to ruin this movie. well not ruin but an obvious solution that would completely negate the plot. break the knives about in half to make them a more manageable size, then blunt the blades edge. boom problem solved. you could even go the extra mile and coat the metal fingers in rubber.
For all the talk about Edward needing a doctor that could help him... It would have been nice if any of these neighboors knew a blacksmith or a mechanic that could truly help Edward, lol
