In reference to the head on which side at 8:17ish, pertaining to a crack back. I coach a down step aim for V of neck cover up block for that very reason. It has been sucsessful. I really enjoyed the video

great video, I'm going to add the Rocket to my Double Wing this season to help with getting outside, and still keep my great wing counter play.

Excellent point about using race over reach. I'll probably use that terminology. I like it.

Great videos coach, i am new to Rocket and Jet but I want to add it to our Playlist. Question: what cadence do you use to keep the timing right, not sure if you want to share that or not but I thought I would ask, if not no big deal. Love your passion for the game, keep the videos coming!

Love the Pa TD. How often do you throw the ball in a game?
@CoachAlbaughChiefpigskin

Usually somewhere between 3 and 10 times.

I agree with that the both philosophies has its pros and cons. I am a JET-eye master. I think the first rules of the jet is to make sure that your backs understand the mesh point. I teach two jet tracks so that they understand that fakes are more important than getting the ball. I do believe rocket has a very good advantage if your speed it good. We won the states with very little speed but had kids that understood the blocking on the edge. Although rockets fakes are really great with Belly, down and truck. Jet forces the DB and SS to come now. I have not had that same conflict with the rocket motion. They look but they wait and if the ball is not pitched they are still safe. The jet motions when the fake is done correct will freeze the DE, LB, DB, and SS, and sometimes make the FS stay still. This my friend is a play-actions dream. Now I will say that schemes stay the same but player's don't. Every wing-T coach can gain knowledge from whatever someone else is doing within the system. As a Wing-T advocate both rocket and jet will give any defense problems. I prefer the jet because of the stack fake that forces the defense to stair into the backfield for at lest 3 seconds. That can not be replicated with the rocket motion fake. I enjoyed your session. Coach Clark,

In 2015 with children I finally got to do something I'd wanted to for a while: install sidesaddle T with jet/fly series. I was reconstructing the way it was done by Beade with Jaworski at QB at Youngstown State College (now YSU). They were running it before the words "jet" and "fly" were even applied by others to that type of sweep. But the advantage of doing it out of sidesaddle T with kids is that, since the QB faces the motioning back as he comes, you don't need a lot of practice time to be able to snap the ball very closely timed to the motion. The QB, facing a sideline, just has to swing the ball out a little from under the snapper's butt for a reach-take (or fake) handoff by the jetting back. Then he does a skate step to gain a little depth. That's not to say there aren't drawbacks. You don't gain MUCH depth, and you can really rub tight past the QB, so the line on the play side had better not get pushed back. It's also not as deceptive as having a conventionally placed (forward facing) QB do a half turn to hand the ball off, but the saving in practice time is worth it; it's still much MORE deceptive than handing in front in the shotgun jet, and easier executed. Among the many things the jet back can do easily in sidesaddle is run a kind of scissors play that's a slant inside and can be blocked the same as your regular trap play.

Have you heard Matt Canada's "Jizz" play? It's Jet Sweep + IZ away. Last two guys to the jet side reach block no matter what, everyone else blocks IZ. Both plays look 100% identical. Canada became known for it at Pitt (watch the game vs. Penn State!), but I really saw it come in during the 2014 season with Kansas City and De'Anthony Thomas, a super speedster in his Oregon days. I also saw Alabama run it quite a bit in the National Championship Game. Tell me if you want more info on it! Videos are great, keep it up.

LOL. What a horrible name! What info do you have on it?
@gussmith5691
@gussmith5691 7 лет назад
Nothing more than what I've read from a couple of blog posts. It is a very deceptive play that any offense can use. Since you're a Wing-T guy, I will tell you that this would mesh very well with trap like it does with IZ. The base concept in and of itself is simple. The OL and running back run a routine inside zone play. There is a guy sent in Jet motion, and the last two guys on the backside of IZ will reach or stalk block (for the Jet). Depending on the playcall, the QB will either hand off to the Jet or give to the RB on the inside zone. The play is basically a variation of a split-zone play. Instead of kicking-out or reading the backside defensive end, you're just messing with his head. He won't be blocked at all. A disciplined DE will step down with the backside OT, bend and try to collapse the IZ play. If he does that, run Jet because he's taken himself out of the play entirely. If he sits or widens with the Jet, run IZ because he has taken him out of that play. Email me if you want to know more, augustussmith59@gmail.com. This is a hard thing to explain without drawing it out and giving a visual. I'd like to see you do a Film Friday on it!
@CoachAlbaughChiefpigskin

Coach why are you blocking on the back side of rocket?
@fbcoach6935
@fbcoach6935 7 лет назад
Love the channel Coach, Question You touch upon it a little around the 11:30 min mark but it has to do with the "blocking on the perimeter with the wing"; I'm trying to streamline the process of teaching this blocking in space and make sure I am using consistent coaching points. But my struggle is how do you go about teaching this block? I've liken it to making a tackle in space, so you have to breakdown, buzz the feet, then engage, but it all feels so wishy-washy. What are your teaching points? I've had times where the player just attacked the man while full stride and we were fine, but then there are the times where he completely whiffs and now we're screwed. I would appreciate your input
@CoachAlbaughChiefpigskin
@CoachAlbaughChiefpigskin 7 лет назад
We teach our kids to take 3 lateral steps toward the sideline then work to get your inside shoulder ripped across the outside shoulder of your block. We don't want to use our hands. Once we get him out leveraged we will turn our hips and seal him off. Using your hands at this point is fine. If the crack block crosses your face then look to kick out the corner. We like our head on the upfield shoulder.
@fbcoach6935
@fbcoach6935 7 лет назад
Very interesting, I'm sitting here watching one of our Rocket plays that went for a TD and the Wing successfully blocked the force player just like how you described, inside shoulder ripping across! (I didn't teach this lol), As the wing is working to get his inside shoulder ripped across, is there an emphasis on dipping the hips to develop more power (explode into the guy)? Or is this not a valid coaching point because he is currently full striding to get his body across?
@CoachAlbaughChiefpigskin
@CoachAlbaughChiefpigskin 7 лет назад
It sounds like a good coaching point if he can do it. I suppose it would depend on how fast he was running.

Jet motion is good to get the defense to slow down when run as a decoy, great for setting up bootlegs and passes or runs opposite especially when the QB is in shotgun or pistol
@TheBigRedTom

Little late to the party here. But at 7:37 I think the issue is more with footwork than anything. The X receiver is closed to the crack with the inside foot up, if it was switched with his outside foot up he'd be much quicker at making that 'in' cut towards the point of attack.

We stretched our buc sweep out to where alot of the times the playside guard would pull to kick out/log corner and backside would read off of that. So we didn't rocket or jet.

I've always thought about running a variation of my buck sweep that hits way more like a sweep than an off tackle play. I've always thought it would be a nice compliment.

The Sprint Sweep is exactly that . There are many approaches to the bucksweep ive seen an, on approach, a reach approach,a double at P.O.A. approach and no approach clueless coaches just running shit. When you been running the WT for 13 seasons you come across all kind's of great things it's why i favor Hybrid Wing these day's i get the best of many world's.

I have a Jet Series Double Wing this season. 1st year calling plays. What can I do against teams who bring a Safety and OLB up to the line and load the box? I'm coaching 9 and 10 year olds.
@CoachAlbaughChiefpigskin
@CoachAlbaughChiefpigskin 6 лет назад
Gotta be able to hurt them with trap, a strong counter, and a play action pass. If you are good with any or all of those, then teams can over play the jet.

@SJ_Line_Coach

When we run rocket we leave the #1 receiver a little wider than you and will have him crack the apex/overhang defender, our wing seals the EMOLOS and we pull our tackle who blocks FDM, he's going to look outside to insode, it will usually be a corner, the rest of the line will Race/Reach toward the play side. If we're in trips with an open field the #2 cracks apex/overhang and the #1 will crack the safety, closed field the #2 comes flatter and helps the play side guard on the play side middle and #1 will still crack the apex/overhang. After running rocket a few times if we get the LBers flowing hard to motion we're set up nice to run slant/belly to the play side or back side and trap either way. We will even run a QB counter off of it with the FB leading if the backside OLB is disciplined and stays home.

Sorry about the way that post was worded, after watching another one of your videos I realized this is a pet peeve when a coach starts off with "When we run". I was hoping to get your thoughts always looking for other perspectives.

Coach what do you think draws a defender out of the box more effective, Rocket or Jet? Or are they both equally effective?
@CoachAlbaughChiefpigskin
@CoachAlbaughChiefpigskin 7 лет назад
This is a great debate point Coach! I have found that they are equally effective. For us, we chose to feature Rocket simply because I felt like I could do more things off that motion than I could with the Jet motion. But we have run a good deal of Jet in the past... and quite effectively. I'm a huge fan of both.
@donnieharn303
@donnieharn303 7 лет назад
We have a big physical qb and fb combination so we have a pistol package we use and look to run some powers with both of them. I'm just wondering what motion would pull the last guy out more often for a kick out. Both would probably keep the ends honest
@CoachAlbaughChiefpigskin
@CoachAlbaughChiefpigskin 7 лет назад
In that case I would vote for Jet motion. I'm not a fan of Rocket motion from the gun.

why not pull the guard backside? If he isn't making a block consistently enough (not because he doesn't want to/can't), pull him away from the rocket to create a false read. Then build in a counter that uses the pull so that defenders have to respect it.

how does the weak side iso look like?
@CoachAlbaughChiefpigskin
@CoachAlbaughChiefpigskin 7 лет назад
It really looks like what a lot of teams would call belly. We would go big on big with our guard and tackle and the wingback would insert. Or if we are in our wing-t look, then the halfback would lead block through the hole. QB reverses out and gives to the FB.
@macgordon5582
@macgordon5582 5 лет назад
Your wr misses the block because he's late as he has his wrong foot forward. If he had his outside foot forward then his first step can be inside which would allow him to get to the defender a step quicker. With his inside foot forward he's taking a stutter step to change the angle of his body rather than a direct step to the defender.
@erickilpatrick5265

best way I always liked running Rocket is to wait till the man running rocket is between the back and guard to the side he is running the rocket so he is already at full speed and attacking the side he is supposed to be attacking.

I like rocket scheme wise. Jet just does not do it for me. I'm a college student and an assistant for a team a whole lot like yours. They run rocket and buck sweep, and the HC doesn't like jet a whole lot lol

Coach Albaugh my biggest problem on the youth level is finding qualified coaches, there are plenty of dads willing to help but larger percentage of time that I would like goes to coaching the coaches n Rowe techniques and terminology. If there was a set of videos helping new coaches learn the game it would help

@dalegend7488
@dalegend7488 7 лет назад
On grass there's no way to pin that guy legally i'm surprised they never flagged you.We run crack toss since 05 and stopped cracking emlos because of bullshit calls. So as i have evolved with this wonderful offense i came across an elder that schooled me on unwritten rule. I'm not saying don't do it i'm just saying cracking apex lber or overhang safety makes much more sense if your thinking x and o's..
@goodmaro
@goodmaro 3 года назад
@@dalegend7488 Explain how there's no way to pin the EMLOS in legally. I think cross-blocking on the edge, with a crack blocker and a T or TE arc releasing under him makes perfect sense. However, if possible I want the end to reach or crab the end to hook him; it just depends on whether he's close enough.

@CoachAlbaughChiefpigskin

So what are your reasons for choosing Jet?
@JeffHemhauser
@JeffHemhauser 7 лет назад
Coach Albaugh we use both as well. In youth football the rocket pitch is a little more riskier. However, rocket has worked very well for us. Had more success with rocket, but with 10 year old kids sometimes the pitch is fumbled. Belly and counter have been very explosive for us. Those plays are nasty off of rocket action.
@coachwest4087
@coachwest4087 7 лет назад
Coach Albaugh reason why I love jet is because I feel that I get more from jet motion. My jet back can be a instant blocker a ball carrier a route runner and a faker. Jet motion fit into our passing game more than rocket.I still run down and belly with jet motion..but I really enjoy how you use rocket package coach .have you ever thought about rocket waggle??
