This is really some mind blowing stuff....great video. These chords are so beautiful in they're own way, I've never really heard sounds like these. Some are so ultimate-dark sounding yet with so much life and story behind them especially smething like that deep lower Ab over C where you have that C in the bass. Man, that is a fascinating sound

Love it. That open voiced Augmented slash chord instantly sent me into the Rite of Spring and Joe Hisaishi's score for Nausicaa (which he probably borrowed from or was inspired by the prior). Great video, thank you!

Great stuff in there, Rick! The way you break the material into triads makes it easy to comprehend, making it easy to try it out immediately. You should make a video of the diminished scale (C Db Eb E Gb G A Bb), I often use it for improvisation in my work as an organist. Adam, Sweden

First heard this scale in the third movement (Elegia) of Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra, and after playing around with it for a bit I realized how it works well in the context of a augmented chord. Nice to know my musical intuition was right.

another way to think about the augmented scale is like a how half whole diminished scale is to divide the octave evenly in 4 (dim7 chord) and base major or minor triads off of it. divide the octave into four and you get three groups (4x3=12). augmented can be constructed using the same concept, just divide the octave evenly in 3 (augmented triad) and build major or minor triads over those roots. You 4 groups of triads here (3x4=12). I actually came across this because I had the boneheaded idea to practice triad arpeggios going up/down in all intervals and found that the minor and major 3rd interval sounded really familiar. It's interesting that some basic idea brought me back to some scales I haven't thought about since music school. I like the ways you voice out the chord really mask the symmetry of the scale and really/also add unexpected tension.

My best scale is E Augmented Heptatonic Scale. Distortion is in the melody, unlike other scales, less melody more mood, the space between mood and scale distortion is the art, I call it Art Noise.

while watching this i felt like someone was standing behind me with a big knife. i find it amazing the way sound can evoke such emotion. in this case dread/tension for me. does anyone understand the relationship between sound and emotion? it seems like it would be hard to quantify.

I'm having a hard time trying to grasp polychords here- isn't CM over Em just a Cmaj7 voiced in inversion? EGB + CEG = pretty much C E G B? Can someone tell me what makes this a polychord and not simply an inverted or slash chord? Really cool sounding scale, thanks for sharing!

Heya i'm not a theory goddess but since noone's got back to you yet... my understanding is that its a way of expressing it to make it simpler especially once you get into using six distinct notes like Cm over Fm. I personally find it easier to think about two triads than Fm79 but maybe I'm just stupid. The other side of it that probs Rick is dealing with here is because maybe you wanna give the strings the Fm and the horns the Cm esp if you're writing polytonal where one group of instruments are hanging out in one key and some of the others are playing in a separate key. Someone else may have a better answer but that's my feeling having used polychords quite a bit but maybe not well!

One tone is missing. I mean, there is no reason not to add one tone more to it. Like C D D# E G G# B It'd be like harmonic mol, without a fourth (major third instead) right?
@RickBeato
@RickBeato 7 лет назад
Hi Oskar- One tone is not missing. That is the scale and people have been using it for 100 years, If you add another note it's a different scale.
@oskarzdrojewski983
@oskarzdrojewski983 7 лет назад
Rick Beato Yeah I understand that, I just wanted to note, that using a seven tone scale would be more versatile than six tone one.
@RickBeato
@RickBeato 7 лет назад
Tell that to the whole tone scale :) I agree 7 note scales are easier to use. Thanks!
