He is amazing! George C. Scott! He famously (and iconically) played another general, "Patton" (1970). Really good movie, great performance. World War II. You don't need to know anything about it. Written by Francis Ford Coppola, which led to him doing "The Godfather". Definitely if you like Turgidson, check out "Patton" one day. A beloved classic movie and fantastic performance that there aren't nearly enough reactions for!

Well as ironic as it is, they did maintain peace for 46 years. They kept the Cold War, cold. As did the Soviet nuclear program. Nuclear weapons might scare the hell out of us, but what if that fear is the very thing needed to keep countries in peace. Why do children behave better around some teachers than the same children behave worse around others…….? Fear. Fear makes people behave themselves. Nuclear weapons are the reason russia choose Ukraine to invade and not Poland/Latvia/Lithuania/Estonia/Czech Republic/turkey/china/Alaska etc. If he attacked a nuclear power or a nato member he’d be at war with the entire west. He attacked Ukraine to stop them going towards the west/EU/NATO because once Ukraine was in nato then it would be too late for him to attack. Just like we should have attacked North Korea before they got nuclear weapons, now it’s too late. A country getting a nuke is like a runner crossing the finish line and now they’re safe. now nobody can boss you around because you’re too well armed. People say we shouldn’t have attacked Iraq because they didn’t have WMDs………….but isn’t that an argument for attacking them….before they get WMDs and are too strong to exert pressure over. Would the war in Iraq have went better if saddam did have WMDs? Like the poison used throughout the 80s and 90s where he gassed Iranians, Kurds, Iraqis and (very possibly) nato soldiers liberating Kuwait including my favorite uncle. Many people believe “gulf war syndrome” is actually the defects of the nerve agents saddam used during wars and rebellions.

The song "Try a Little Tenderness", as the planes refuel cracks me up. Like bees flying around sharing pollen, or the more male/female aspect of it - not so subtle humor at it's best. This film is loosely based on a thriller novel called Red Alert (1958) by Peter George, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Kubrick and Terry Southern.

Largely inspired by, since the biggest hawk during those 13 days in October 1962 was Curtis LeMay, head of SAC. He wanted to attack Cuba and invade, which likely would have resulted in a full nuclear war. George c Scott’s character Buck turgidson is inspired by LeMay. And Dr Strangelove is inspired by Werner Bon braun.

That deflecting missile had a small atomic warhead. It appeared to detonate about 1-mile from their plane, so it didn’t strike them, but still caused significant damage because it was atomic.
@thecraigster8888
@thecraigster8888 Год назад
A well known characteristic of atomic explosions is the EMP, electromagnetic pulse of intense photon radiation. Solid state electronics are very sensitive to this EMP. Unless they are heavily shielded, they are easily “fried” and go inert. The equipment would not blow up like in the movie, but just cease to function. However, the audience would not understand this, so the dramatic equipment explosion was needed. The depth of the technical detail of the B-52s functions was another Kubrick trait. In fact, they recreated the classified interior of the plane so well, they were almost investigated by the government.

You left the best line out of the edit! "Gentlemen, you can't fight in here...This is the War Room!" Aside from that, though, I loved your reaction for the hilarity you picked up from the script, something many other reactors miss for focus on the ridiculous plot. How it was received? Once it finally came out (release had to be delayed...it was scheduled for the day Kennedy was shot), critics loved it, but the box office was pretty ordinary. By the way, that line from Major Kong..."fella could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas" had to be dubbed after the Kennedy assassination because, if you watch his lips you can see the original line was "a good weekend in Dallas", which of course is where Kennedy was shot. And one more thing...the best classic movies are in the American Film Institute's Top 100 rather than IMDb, IMO, where Strangelove is actually a top 20 all-time.

"Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room." Fun Fact: Just so you know, there are plenty of safeguards in place for this to never ever happen. This is a comedy of the absurd. Although the US Military includes "now" when responding to this movie, there's nothing to say that this could have happened before. Double Duty Fact: Legendary Peter Sellers plays President Merkin Muffley, Group Captain Lionel Mandrake, and the titular Dr. Strangelove. Peter Sellers was paid $1 million, 55% of the film's budget. Peter Sellers improvised most of his Dr. Strangelove lines. And one of the most significant is in the final scene, when as Dr. Strangelove, exclaims: "Mein Führer! I can walk!" Medical Fact: Dr. Strangelove apparently suffers from Alien Hand Syndrome (AHS), or so known as agonistic apraxia. It's caused by damage to the corpus callosum, the nerve fibers that connect the brain's two hemispheres. Researchers at the University of Aberdeen who identified it named it Dr. Strangelove Syndrome. This was not ultimately not approved, though it is sometimes used as an alternative name. Very Realistic Fact: In the early 1960s the B-52 was cutting-edge technology. Access to it was a matter of national security. The Pentagon refused to lend any support to the film after they read the script. Set designers reconstructed the B-52 bomber's cockpit from a single photograph that appeared in a British flying magazine. When some American Air Force personnel were invited to view the movie's B-52 cockpit, they said it was a perfect copy. Stanley Kubrick feared that Ken Adam's production design team had used illegal methods and could be investigated by the FBI.

In 1960 Stanley Kubrick started production of the film adaptation that would be Dr Strangelove In 1962 another the novel Fail Safe was published; it was so similar to Red Aleet that both the author of Red Alert and Kubrick sued for copyright infringement. The lawsuit was settled, with part of the terms being that Columbia Pictures biight the Fail Safe movie and Kubrick gained the right for his movie to be released first 1964 saw the release of Dr Strangelove in January and Red Alert's film adaptation (starring Henry Fonda) in October. The opening scenes of refueling and formation flying was Air Force stock footage. The shots of Maj. What a GREAT reaction (and commentary) to this one. Although the cinematography is still great in this movie, I totally agree: he doesn't hit you over the head with it the way "2001" and "Clockwork" and "Shining" does (and other films of his). Your laughter was making ME laugh all over again, and it's just so great to see how the comedy of this movie holds up. And yes: the military and the government are sometimes at odds, not just in the USA but in any country. The movie uses the "Cold War" as it's backdrop - it was current at the time! But little has changed, and we still have two countries that are tense with each other, that have stockpiles of nuclear weapons, and - as Putin did in the last couple of years - intimate he can and will use them. In fact, things are WORSE now: there are other countries that are nuclear powers......and with the wacko right wing of the USA acting like caterwauling, colicky infants for the last twenty years, I wouldn't have great confidence in EITHER country not blowing us all up.

There were two books, that year that dealt with the same subject matter, On was Red. Alert, and the other was Fail Safe. Both were serious books, both were made into movies. One of them turned into a comedy. the other did not. Peter Sellers played three central roles here. As the President he goes for dead pan humor. Like an old Bob Newhart routine. As Strangelove he goes for slapstick. Mandrake was the only sane one here. You might want to catch the movie. Fail Safe. to contrast Strangelove.

There's also a less humorous take on basically this same scenario in the 1964 film (and in its 2000 teleplay remake) Fail Safe. Technically, restraint and acknowledgement of the final outcome can prevent a nuclear exchange from becoming an all-out nuclear war, but, of course, it's the same restraint that one would need in not launching first to begin with. They would have convinced the whole launch chain of the desperation of the situation and the vitality of being the first to "push the button". Trying to argue restraint with them after even a proportionate retaliation to that act could prove to be difficult. It would be raw emotions vs. belief of the restraint of the opposition and the rational thought of the outcome if they didn't stop.

Note that this 1964 movie was shot in black and white. That was a deliberate choice in cinematography, desaturating the visual stimulation to focus the viewers' senses to the characters on screen. The same can be seen in set design. Most of the locations provide a flat background, almost like a white wall---and in one case, that wall actually is a mirror, doubling the actors' presence---that, while interesting, don't draw the eyes and "run off" to the sides of the screen instead of framing the characters. Even the busyness of the computer room is destroyed by its vastness and repetitiveness, giving the single character a sharp outline and high contrast.

Dropkick is a football term in this context. It's basically a punt where the ball is dropped to the foot and kicked rather than being kicked from a tee. The wrestling term dropkick wasn't in common usage at the time. Funny you should talk about Fail-safes. This movie came out about the same time as a serious movie with Henry Fonda about the same subject called Fail-Safe. But in addition to the Cuban Missile Crisis there were a couple of times that Nuclear War nearly started. The world was once saved by a Russian Sub Commander that refused to launch because he thought it was a glitch. He was correct. And if you look closely you can see Slim Pickens saying Dallas but it coming out Vegas. The JFK assassination had recently happened and it was felt it was too soon to mention it. And yes, the pilots name is Major King Kong. Supposedly, that was to be Peter Sellers' forth role in this movie, but he felt the three he did was more than enough and he faked a broken ankle and they got Slim Pickens instead, which was a better choice.

"Dr. Strangelove" made us smile and laugh during these grim times. 14:10 "Mutually Assured Destruction" was a given at this time, which sounds funny to "modern audiences," but left us with the feeling that we could be burned to death in nuclear fires at any time. In short it's about as funny as a "Mexican Standoff." Another look at this era is "The Iron Giant" or "October Sky," two 1999 movies set during Sputnik I (1957). Sorry old bean, you're as funny as a compound fracture, because the nuclear numbers game was true. G'bye "Laughing Larry."

This is about the only country in the world that has dropped the bom. The USA. The USA dropped a bom on Hirosjima and Navasaki. The insane . The Insanity. Thats what this movie is about.

You know that the cinematographer (Gilbert Taylor) that shot this film also shot "Star Wars." P.S. Gee I hope you actually watched this film without pausing it so much.

I enjoyed your reaction, but not everything was part of the comedy. The various plans and alternative plans is pretty typical and probably simplified. 'Dropkick' wouldn't have been an unusual operational name. They were often randomly assigned words.

they flew over Greenland to get the scenery and they accidentally flew over a US airbase at Thule and were forced to land and taht footable was removed. My father flew as a navigator in those planes, to the pole and back and was perfectly capable of bombing the russians. Boomers all grew up with this threat of nuclear annihilation as a constant thought. the danger is still there and we haev reinstated this procedure of lfying up there recently so it is still a threat.

I am reminded of the Mark Twain quote, "I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, most of which never happened." The cold war ended without a nuclear war, the earth's population increased and there is less starvation than ever in history, and we have not and will not run out of oil. The world faces challenges but not catastrophes.
