I recently watched Aristocats (my favorite Disney movie) and forgot how PASSIONATE and beautiful Disney used to be! Even though the art style was “messy” or “sketchy”, it added much more charm and character to the film! It wasn’t just a movie to watch, it was literal ART being hand drawn frame by frame, which makes you appreciate the film even more! Everyone was unique because they HAD to be (since it was hand drawn), as opposed to the same 3D face model being used over and over again and just switching out hair or eye color. Old Disney for the win

The release sequence wouldn't have changed anything. There are just too many bad ones storywise and people are getting tired of the woke nonsense on top of that. Even the better ones are very superficial light entertainment. They are nothing in comparison to the cultural phenomenons which Disney's movies once were. Also they should never have closed their 2D department. It's a shame that they let true art die. 3D is nice but not true art like hand drawn things are.

@@EbonyPopeI’d argue that 3D digital animation is true art. Why? It also takes both time and skill to perfect (though a very different skillset than 2D hand drawn animation) and its artists can still creatively solve their issues. Think how “Monsters Inc.” needed convincing fur for characters like Sullivan, so the Pixar’s animation team developed state-of-the-art simulation technology to compensate.

As someone in the industry, a big part of the problem is that there a very few people as precise, passionate and knowledgeable about 2D animation these days. The early days of Disney were passion projects but unfortunately modern society doesn’t give anyone enough space or financial freedom to invest their time and effort into their passions anymore. People need to be making enough money to live and are too drained from stress to even consider passion projects on the side.
@milkywaycafe.
@milkywaycafe. 6 месяцев назад
Fun fact it's only more costly than 3d animation because 2d is unionized. 3d animation isn't any easier for them to make so they would benefit from doing some 2d animation now and again

I read online from someone who works in Disney animation that they can't even go back to hand drawn anymore, primarily because they don't even have the equipment there. Another problem with Disney: They hate things that actually work. For example: The Owl House was actually doing super well, and had a MASSIVE fan-base. Then, Disney cancelled it because “it didn’t fit the brand”. The final season did INCREDIBLY well, and it trended on TikTok and Twitter. Disney realized they were wrong, they admitted it, and lost more money. And that’s just ANOTHER problem with Disney…☹

Technically speaking they need to work merchandise into bigger projects like animated shows. However, they don't seem to know how to launch and manage merch lines that aren't aimed a small children so they struggle to support such franchises. This isn't even a Disney specific problem and is why you don't see many long form cartoons succeed.

Having insane budgets is a major part of the problem. Disney has ballooned budgets to the point of absurdity, where every film has to be a major hit to break even. There's been a rumor that Apple wants to buy Disney for a few years now Edit to add: It might sound wrong, but Apple is a bigger company than Disney. By market cap, Apple is the largest company in the world (not by total assets). Think of all the people worldwide who have an Apple device in their pocket or on their person at all times. Apple also has knowledge of each person's media habits in a way Disney does not. Apple knows exactly how many hours you watch any streaming service on one of their devices, and probably also knows what you're watching too. Disney only knows how much Disney you watch. I think that another huge problem that Disney has is how they market their original stories. Most people who saw Elemental enjoyed the movie, but I know that the reason most didn’t go to see it in theaters (me included) was because a lot of the marketing for the movie centered around an annoying 'comedic' character. When you watch the movie, that character is in 3, maybe 4, scenes and speaks very little but his face was EVERYWHERE in the marketing. So people were like 'This annoying character is going to be in a lot of the movie, so I'm not gonna see it.' The same is going on rn with their newest original IP 'Wish'. The main marketing for it that I've seen has been the villain's song which most people don't like, but I've heard absolutely nothing else about it. I have no idea what the movie is about, even when looking on Wikipedia or Google.

MattPat is a bit different, he learned all about metrics when he worked at Defy Media. He then educated all of the bigwigs on RU-vid, like Pewds, like Jackcepticeye, like Markiplier and so many others. When he started consulting privately after leaving defy that's what he did he taught them about the metrics, and how to use them. He and Stephanie used to go to Vidcon and I saw this seminar they did, packed with a thousand creators and they're going over the optimal video length, best times to stream, optimal video length for FaceBook pages, so forth and so on. That’s really the usual. Those titans can’t really reorient themselves fast so when the tide turns they are caught with their pants down. It used to be that the massive CGI filed, EGS and China friendly blockbuster was a guaranteed success, but now the market has changed and audiences want something else, but Disney and WB have fifteen projects down the pipeline that they can’t cancel and it will take years for them to adjust. The far smaller (still gigantic but ya know) Universal and Paramount will be running circles around Disney/WB or even replace them.

The "practical effects make it feel more authentic and genuine" thing is bullshit. You just need to look at a bunch of old movies at the height of the practical effects era to see it's not true. It only seems this way because audiences literally never notice the good cgi (and sometimes studios outright lie about nit using cgi). The reason EEAAO managed so much on such a relatively small budget is because they were smart about it, picking the best tool for the job and tying some effects that would otherwise be pretty lame into the story and so elevating them (see: when a guy's head blows up into a confetti. In isolation it's a pretty lame effect. In the movie it's awesome because it shows just how unhinged the character who makes it happen is.)

Honestly I am ok with Disney going down. They don’t care about their employees. They’re just about money. They literally sue people for using the Disney font even if the words written don’t say Disney. That happened to one of my moms friends, she’s a wedding photographer and her client loved Disney, so the photographer hand wrote a banner that said something along the lines of Congratulations Mr. & Mrs. last name. She ended up posting some of the photos on Facebook, and around a month later she was contacted by someone from Disney saying that they would sue her for using their font even though it didn’t say Disney on it or even mention anything Disney related with it. I don’t think she actually ended up getting sued, but the people at Disney were completely willing to go through with it. Anyway, I think Disney needs to get a wake up call and get their egos in check because their entire business has been going down hill for many many years now.

In discussing Disney's reshoot issues, and Mat's comments about the senior creative team needing to be on the same page, I was reminded of the ongoing writer's strike. One of the major complaints the WGA had was that the big studios are trying to cut them out of the production process as much as possible. Historically the writers of a film or television episode have been involved with the shooting and editing process to coordinate any changes that need to be made to the story during the filmmaking process. It would honestly be poetic if by trying to shortchange the writers led to companies like Disney actually losing money from the cost of expensive reshoots, and lost revenue from inferior writing.

I believe that we can tell about a character who loses his trust and feels betrayed by the world, even characters who have accomplished great deeds...there are, however, two big problems in this narrative: 1. if this is part of a trend that has already started, the risk is that the public perceives it as something they have already seen; 2. if the character who is in the process of retiring does not redeem himself with his own hands, but has everything passed through the filter of a new character - who, perhaps, has no impact on the public - then it all feels like an identity theft from the damage of the older hero, in favor of a new figure who is often poorly written. And there's a case in point: Logan (2017). In this movie, Wolverine and Xavier are finished, literally. They have lost their friends and the purpose that had guided them for years, they are hunted by the government and they do not see a future not only for their people, but also for themselves: Xavier has sudden crises that make him a threat to himself and the others, Logan is dying poisoned by adamantium (what made him the weapon x and which also gave him the qualities to become a hero, is corroding him). Logan, over the course of the film, understands that it will be Laura (and, by extension, the mutant kids) who will represent the new generation of X-Men, but he doesn't pass the baton to the little girl without fighting and proving who he is one last time. .there is the fall, but there is also the generational transition with a worthy action. Han Solo? His path of fall is narrated off-screen and he dies in a rather anticlimactic way... oh, it might be me but that death communicated absolutely nothing to me, furthermore Rey is not a character that I thought could fill Solo's shoes, in fact his growth path was sclerotic. Indiana Jones? He had a magnificent conclusion with The Last Crusade: it is absurd to think that a teacher loved by his students as he was in the previous films could have been reduced to the state in which we find him in the last film released, net of the elimination of his son at outside of the film itself.

I looked up Encanto and saw that it pulled $257 million worldwide against a $150 million estimated production budget. While that is successful in a way compared to Disney's most recent efforts, it's almost guaranteed the film didn't return a profit after considering marketing and distribution costs. A 2021 release would have certainly affected ticket sales, of course. Frozen is now so old that it doesn't really reflect the kind of products modern Disney is capable of making. It might as well be from another company at this point. For reference, Frozen's production budget was reported to be $150 million and its worldwide gross was $1,285 million. And that wouldn't count merchandising and branding tie-ins of course.

As a father of a little girl I can assure you of that. That is all profits that Disney sees but are not calculated in box office or review scores. Just look at the kids shows we loved when we were kids they were all made to sell toys, and most of the biggest ones are still around now. No one would watch iron man if it wasn’t a comic book that held weight to begin with. By alienating these fans who started the franchise to begin with you do nothing but just hurt the brand. Tossed aside for the new generation. And even if it’s just 30-40% of revenue you are missing out on, that’s still a lot of revenue. I want marvel and Star Wars to keep going and I know you do to. If anything writers should be writing something that appeals to the original fanbase, so they can use word of mouth to spread to everyone else. It will bring back the magic of marvel again.

Speaking of strange pacing decisions and also being scared to try new things reminds me of what Disney did to The Owl House. That's probably some of the best content they've made since the pandemic and they were too afraid to let it run it's whole course. That said, the whole Owl House team really did a smashing job finishing it out. You can tell how rushed the pacing of season 3 is, but it's still so good.

@@spaceboyctstudios2934 There's a few 'cancelled disney movies' videos you can watch about several new and/or original movies (some were sequels) that were already in production and got scrapped. Personally I thought the movie 'Gigantic' seemed really fun and interesting. Of course there are also ideas being constantly suggested that will never see the light of day. I would much rather see that than any of the live-action remakes. I will acknowledge some of the remakes have been good and did something new with them like they did with Maleficent. However the majority is just Disney trying to cash in some easy money using their popular names and the nostalgia associated with them and completely butchering the stories and characters arcs of said movies.

@@dika_hilmanThe problem is they've been on the safe lane for too long. You can do something experimental *Without* burning a million bucks on it. Take a small group of your animators, take some storyboarders, and tell them "We need concepts and ideas, throw us some spitballs and we'll greenlight the ones the team likes most - within reason." Now, let this 'indie disney' brand develop with that team getting a specific name, so that audiences who pick up on what they put out have the ability to hype a project up if the team ends up doing well. Do this for a few different writers where they basically get free reign to create their passions though on a slightly limited budget, and you'll have yourself some new experimental 'unique' content that hardly cost you a dime. AND your artists are happy, because they got a no strings attached opportunity to write passion projects they've had on the backburner for decades.

I work auditing movies for Disney and actually despite the underperformance as a whole, the ticket sales for opening day were around 10% of capacity for each showtime. And that's just one city consensus. Not everyone is going to theaters after the pandemic and that's hurt the film industry hugely as well as the writers strike. Falling short in ticket sales when everyone can get a movie streaming like once on dvd before, they'd rather wait until then and not have to pay anything but a small subscription fee to say Disney plus. Ideally it used to be six months before a theatrical release to home video. Now its within a couple of months (or weeks with prime video)

Mat's always been upfront about all the work that goes into running all five channels, while respecting his company, his employees, and his family. Honestly, I think more and more people are leaning towards that style of open communication and trusting more indie brands that show the nitty gritty truth about reality. More so than during production, more so than during deployment.
