“Hey what movie are you watching” “It’s about a man who’s wife was brutally murdered, and who’s disabled son was kidnapped several years later. In order to find his son he must get the help of a mentally disabled woman and travel across the entire world.” “Wow that’s dark, what’s it called?” “Finding Nemo.”
Finding Dory "So what are you watching now?" A movie about a mentally disabled women with amnesia starts getting memories of her parents who think she is dead and she goes with a middle aged man and his disabled son across the ocean on a pointless mission to find her parents ( bad explanation but I did my best ).
*Watching Film Theory to get away from homework on Ancient Rome* Matpat: "The answer lies in Ancient Rome" Me: "Oh Jesus Christ..." i dont have anything against history or ancient rome, i just hate homework ok
Hold on… In finding Dory, her parents actually said and encouraged the fact she had short term memory loss. Dory believed it and told it to others. What if Dory’s parents were really the faking ones and just put it into her head that she did have a disability? An intense version of the placebo effectz
Probably yea because there was an experiment done that told kids they had a severe stutter when they didn’t , and guess what happened they developed a stutter
@@thelanktheist2626 I think your right! They might have done that so they can get more respect and attention from the other families and wanted to protect dory by causing her to think she’s disabled, so everyone would respect her
@@primcasiha well if she actually did feel as if she was losing her memory then it would be the placebo effect that was put into place by a munchausen by proxy
4:53 Actually, Claudius faked his problems too. When he was younger, he was stuttering, but with time it went away, bur he continued to fake it. He was acting really dumb too, all of that to make everyone believe he wasn’t a treat. Then one day, the army elected him to be the emperor so they can control him and they can all control Rome but Claudius took that chance to become the new emperor.
I really don't want to bring back old memories but how does someone die of short term memory loss. I believe you, I just never knew people could die from it
Just now rewatching this I realize: Dory always reminded me of an aunt. That specific aunt turned out to be a manipulative witch that doesn't care for anyone but herself and brought a lot of problems to the family. I kept feeling bad still relating Dory to her cuz ya know, its Dory, she cute. But with this theory... yeah. Dory=aunt is still pretty accurate. Cute and seemingly harmless on the outside, dark and twisted on the inside. Little me was always right lmaoo
Sounds like little you was analyzing the actress behind dory too, as that describes Ellen Degeneres to a tee. Probably just picked up on her over-done phony optimism and "LeT'S JuSt AlL Be HaPpY" shtick that defines her entire existence.
How is Dory dark and twisted? She's pretty harmless and happy. She did help others. Seems like you were just projecting cause of your aunt. Mat was just speculating that Dory faked her memory loss. Doesn't mean it's true. Another thing is writers can have plot holes just cause of their imperfections. I'm pretty sure all stories have plot holes. Listen to disabled, neurodivergent, and mentally ill people. They get accused of faking when they're not. That's harmful to them. One reason why is because sometimes they're capable of doing things and on some days and some not. Their disability isn't constantly the same all the time. Watch Adam Conover on technoableism or disability.
Or... were you? Vsauce, Michael here. I don't know the context about your aunt but I know some people bring problems to those around them accidentally and I feel like Dory's character is like that. I also notice some people are more easily manipulated, I'm not because I'm not going to put up with something I don't have to put up with, whether or not the person actually meant well. It's hard to manipulate someone who takes personal responsibility for their thoughts and actions.
@@nignamedmutt7270 I happen to disagree about Ellen DeGeneres, she was just straight up mean sometimes to people, not subtly manipulative. And it's possible for her to actually care about animals, for example, but have other faults. People aren't perfect heroes and evil villains like in fairy tales.
Actually strong emotionally responses are associated with long term memory meaning that since Dory saw Nemo get kidnapped she could have been triggered remembering seeing the boat
Yet (and I know it’s been 2 years but this bothered me and I’m sorry) Dory never saw Nemo get kidnapped. If we look at it scene by scene, where the field trip took place there were no other fish around. Marlin followed the boat until it got so far away he couldn’t see its trail anymore. Even then he popped his head out the water trying to see where it went (I mention this due to a time reference). After he goes back underwater he begins asking fish if they’ve seen the boat, where he runs headfirst into Dory. Which showed Dory was swimming from the opposite direction from which Marlin was, meaning Dory hadn’t reached the location of Nemo being kidnapped, nor been there at all. Especially if we take the time Marlin was out of the water, it would put her even further away from the location of the kidnapping (which I mention because Dory mentions later in the film she was “built for speed”) so even if Dory was swimming at her maximum capacity, she would have been at even a FURTHER distance from where Nemo was kidnapped.
So I know I'm a little late, but I had a thought. Dory says she's seen "A" Boat, that could just mean she recollects seeing boats in her long life under where apparently fishermen fish. So it could be said that little "Slip-up" is being misread here, I mean I don't even think she swims in the direction the boat went, we can't really know when they hit each other and lost their directions, met with sharks, and THEN knew where to go thanks to the mask. Idk, I read too much into cartoons too.
I was actually thinking the same thing. If she sees boats quite often, would the act of seeing a boat become a procedural memory, and thus lead to "I've seen a boat!" without actually meaning the particular boat being looked for?
Well, she lived in an aquarium previous to being out in the ocean, and my guess is that she was injured while getting to the ocean. She couldn't have seen a boat in the aquarium, because it's an aquarium.
Yeah but it can run through the genes without it being present in a few generations. For example, Alzheimers runs in my family but my aunt doesn't have it. Just like eye colors, you can have 2 brown eyes but be born with blue and things like that. Think of it like a squib in Harry Potter.
Film theory: Dory is the only fish who can read Peach inthe aquarium: The aqua scum 2003 is an all-purpose maintenance-free saltwater purifier that is guaranteed to extend the life of your aquarium fish. The aqua scum is programmed to scan your tank environment every 5 minutes
my grandpa has alzheimers which is like amnesia. it's so bad that he doesn't know how mirrors work anymore. he can't remember anything that has happened older than 5 minutes, and constantly mixes up me and my mom.
I just realized, Dory's "Just keep swimming" may be something her father or mother said to her while escaping from a predator, maybe that predator ate whoever was with her and that traumatized her, causing her memory loss.
What if "Finding Dory" reveals Dory having old, traumatic memories about her family being taken away in a boat though? That would tie the ends of her condition in the first movie together, no?
Maybe the fishermen's net captured her parents kind of like in the end of Finding Nemo, except Dory didn't get inside the netand she had a tearful goodbye with her parents who told her to " Just keep Swimming "
It would not explain how she rembers just seeing a boat, she might know what a boat is and what it looks like. But the memory that she just saw the boat is the thing she should of forgotten.

another crack in her story: she was apparently born with short-term memory loss. in finding dory, she got a flashback to her mom crying to her dad about dory's condition, and that's how she got lost. but also, there would be no reason to lie about having memory loss when she was in the tank unless she WANTED to be lost. hmm...
Didnt she get lost when she was playing hide and seek with her parents and her parents told her not to touch the sand but she forgot about that and eventually did touch it leading her out of her home and she forgot the way to her home?
This is a classic example of over protective - over worrying parents that have successfully “ labelled ” their child as something they are not. Alot of time kids are just slow and unique. So yes Dory doesn’t actually have short term memory, more like just forgetful and adventurous... or like rebellious and naughty. She probably forgot about losing her family due to ptsd and once she helped marlin found them... in a way it healed dory so her memory started to come back. Shes not faking it though. She just doesn’t even know that she’s actually fine.
Hey, Mat Pat, i found a fact: Nemo means no one... I read in a book that acttually, Nemo is never there.... it's just marlin that pretends to have a son... can you try solving this?
Maybe when she said "I seen a boat!" She was describing a boat from her past (coincidentally Marlin was looking for a boat-but she wasnt talking about the same boat.) The word 'boat' was a trigger word for her... Maybe something similar happened to her when she was younger that involved a boat? So it wasnt that she was retaining any new memory, but a past memory that she cant remember. But I guess we'll see when Finding Dory comes out! XD
So Marlin said to Nemo "You don't swim well!" THAT IS THE SAME THING AS TELLING YOUR CHILD THEY CAN'T WALK WHILE THEY ARE 7 YEARS OLD! (Don't hate on me if I spelled Marlin wrong)
Does anyone else feel like the creators of films like this watch the theory video matpat makes about their movie, and thinks "huh, that's a really cool idea" and then tells matpat got it right but in reality matpat created the idea in the first place? Oh well, that's just a theory, after all.
I'm learning so many new things in these videos that would've been helpful back when I was in science class in school, I had no information about genetics in sixth grade when we were learning about it, I wish I watched the "Frozen Not Sisters" one back then...
The real reason his dad wanted to find Nemo so much: Clownfish can change sex and may do so if the population is too low. The population of clownfish was low..... and he got lonely.....
I do not agree. Though she said she has seen a boat, she never actually says at what moment she saw the boat. In the same way that Marlin knows what a boat is though he's somewhere out in the open sea, Dory must of seen/known of boats before any injury or trauma. However she does actually say that she's seen the boat and the direction it went. It may just sound like i'm writing this for nothing, but i'm not trust me;). I researched into short term memory loss and found that people who suffer from short-term memory can retain information for up to 30 seconds! Now if you refer back to the movie from the point that they meet (by swimming into each other) to when they leave in the direction of the boat, all of that happened around 30 seconds, so it would be possible for her to still remember seeing a boat. you even notice that around 20 seconds she starts to slowly forget about the boat.
Agree. The Finding Dory movie basically debunks this theory. Dory's parents clearly raised Dory WITH a short-term memory. Otherwise, Dory would still be happily living with her family and her whale friends. There is no reason for her to be sinister and fake it... She's not even a bad person!...er fish. There's nothing to motivate her to be sinister. Her short-term memory was just hard for Disney's creators to recreate in their movie.

Actually one of my friends aunts has short term memory loss, and she once remembered something that was a declarative memory, though it only happened once so far
Keaton always said, I don't believe in God, but I'm afraid of him. Well, I believe in God, and the only thing that scares me is Kaiser Sosae. The greatest trick the devil ever pulled, was getting the world to believe he didn't exist.
This feels like a good place to say this: Sometimes when I talk and I'm trying to listen to something at the same time, in the middle of a sentence not even a second after, I forget what I'm even talking about.
Well maybe your just bad at multitasking what you are doing is pretty much the definition (trying to focus on two things at once but getting overwhelmed) People who are better at multitasking can deal with focusing on two things at once without being completely overwhelmed Though I don’t know you and this is just what came to mind when I read your comment anyway hope this happening doesn’t cause you to much trouble irl
Finally I've found hd Finding Dory here => twitter.com/b897c6b12a2ec17cd/status/739084066801254400?guid=cfbb64c6-350b-4ac5-acce-c51d1d621fa7 Film Theory: Is Dory FAKING? (Finding Dory)
Fun fact: the guy who played Malcolm on Malcolm in the Middle has retrograde amnesia due to a skateboarding accident. He has no memories of playing Malcolm or most of his childhood movies.
+ruskodisco You should. It's a really good movie. The entire movie is about Dory slowly remembering who her parents are, and having flashbacks to when they were teaching her how to manage her short-term memory loss. She goes looking for them.
Vash Zwingli Ahh thank you. And naw, I didnt have an emotional tie to finding Nemo when I was young and today it's just nothing to me If Aladdin comes back or maybe some other disney movie from the 90's or early 2000 then that would be great but Finding nemo was that one movie I didnt care about :/
***** Understandable. If you ever get the chance to watch it, even if you aren't really emotionally invested in the series (ha, series), it's a really funny movie.
Maybe Dory has both forms of Amnesia, BUT SHE IS SECRETLY THE JASON BOURNE OF FISH... That's why she has so many amazing skills, despite her brain being scrambled eggs. Before she got brain damage, she was a totally amazing super spy. Multiple languages, knowledge of things like boats and balloons, jellyfish jumping abilities, etc. It all checks out... She's not faking. Dory has been mind wiped and just simply doesn't remember her incredible past. Imagine if Jason Bourne was also given short term memory loss. Now you've found Dory. But hey, that's just a theory...
There is a rare type of symptom of short term memory loss called external recollected memory, this means that external stimuli causes memory to be recalled. This only occurs genetically meaning there was no accident as dory says it runs in her family. were still not sure what age it starts but it could be as early as birth.
And we saw her parents yet they didn’t forget her or anything else. We don’t hear anything about it from her parents so Dory has some explaining to do 👀
Short term memory lose is a thing and it can in rare chances "run in the family" and MIGHT not effecting certain parts of the family. So thier is a chance that the short-term memory loss skipped a generation or it started with her and she's lieing about it running the family.
Arimm The Amazing That is a really good point though I question the reliability of the information she has given because she herself is not sure if the information of wither amnesia running in her family is correct or where her family even is. Also I'm not confusing the two types of amnesia. MatPat just told a story of a person who got the same type of amnesia due to surgery on his brain which constitutes as a non-genetic form of acquiring this type of amnesia.
Or what if she just saw the boat right before Marlin. I mean, he crosses an ocean in like 2 days, so the boat couldn't have been far until he ran into Dory.
