This theory has been proven in the show. In Feral Friends from season 10, a "Neptune's moon" releases a weird radation that temporarily demutates the members of Bikini Bottom. The caveman episode that's referred to here takes place in the BC era, with BC referring to "Before Comedy", meaning that spongebob timeline is seperate from human history.

So this begs the question: How DID the nuclear experiments affect bikini bottom? Clearly bikini bottom existed at Bikini atoll when a bunch of humans started dropping bombs on them- how did the bikini bottomers of the 40s react to that? A very interesting theory! There is nuclear fallout left throughout the show, like in that one episode where SpongeBob accidentally creates a monster from the vats of nuclear acid just chilling around, so clearly there were nuclear weapons around bikini bottom!

i was thinking the same but then if time went that fast we would have traversed time through the show being live. also remember that one episode when squidward goes to the future and travels 2000 years to a civilization that still works and the only thing is that everything is chrome color but you can see a car and a persom painting them. Also ALSO it would be another time on earth when David Hasselhoff showed up
@SandraNLN
@SandraNLN 2 года назад
@@vilistarlight10 No he doesn't (at least I didn't hear it. Please timestamp if I'm wrong). His whole counter-argument to the theory is that they've been around since "centuries before humans started nuclear testing." Whereas there's nothing to say that the denizens of BB don't count 'centuries' differently, it could be a human decade or a human year for all we know. So 12th century could have been as little as 9 years earlier. With nuclear mutations, who's to say that it didn't accelerate the growth and development rate of creatures who already have lifespans vastly different than that of humans, and reproduction rates that can be in the thousands per year. Of course, then you get into biological age differences in such a diverse group. which opens a whole different can of worms. You'll have Larry the Lobster who could go over 100 years, Patrick's got about 30, Mr. Krabs only has like a decade in him, Pearl will go to about 70-80. And then there's spongebob. Who himself could live to hundreds of years old, maybe over 1000. Maybe the radiation found an ancient sponge who was the catalyst for the development of the civilization as we know it? XD

Also, in one of the Spongebob caveman episodes, they mention that the caveman era took place during B.C. (Before Comedy). There is no historical period in human history referred to as this. This means that what medieval Squidward refers to as the "12th Century" may not mean the same thing as to us landlovers.
@Synthespian13

I’d like to point out one thing. You talk about how they have a culture that develops over time and that’s why it doesn’t hold up. But animals have shorter life spans than humans. They could have gone through many generations before we get to modern day. Given testing was done in the 1940 and 50s, in animal lifespan, enough time could pass from them to go from primitive to modern…don’t you think?
@ftwkh85
@ftwkh85 2 года назад
then amplify that short life span with the first couple generations dying out quickly because of high radiation levels and it almost completely fixes the issue since your perception of time is directly correlated with how long you have lived.
@conaireparsons9672
@conaireparsons9672 2 года назад
I think is important to look at each life span though. sure many rodents can breed fast and live very short lives, red rock crabs live for about 8 and octopus are around 4 years so your fine with squidward and Mr. Krabs... but starfish can live around 35 years, sperm whales for 70 years, and sponges can live for hundreds of years (possibly thousands), so they might live just a teensy bit longer then humans. at the very least most of these species don't bread fast enough to "evolve a civilization" in such a short time.

I think Tom Kenny meant “topical” more than “pop cultural.” And that is pretty true since most the references mentioned are from more than 2 decades before the episodes aired. the pop culture references flew over most kids heads so I think the focus of those jokes was more the vibe they gave and less so a referential joke. You can easily say he was wrong for using a universal, but I think you’d be missing what he was really trying to say.

Counter-theory: It really is Bikini Atoll, and that the "stone-age" was actually just after the nuclear testing occurred, before the animals were able to develop language and the other things they developed a few decades later. To them, it seems like the stone-age because it was when they first gained sentience, however to us it was just after the nuclear testing concluded.

What if, spongebob's prehistoric era started after the nuclear test, maybe they have a calender of their own, it is surely possible that their "history" started after the nuclear tests. Edit: they can have a totally different calender where the year 1 (1 July 1946) is the time the nuclear test was goin on, and then they started to evolve at a very fast rate, but what totally debunks this theory is that Sponge bob started in 1986, and our sponge boi hasn't aged a day, from the past 40+ years, mr.krabs calls him a "kid" and we haven't seen any feature of him growing old, so ya I debunked my own theory and I wasted your time. I beg you, prove me wrong Edit 2: now that I think of that I guess I was right, and SpongeBob when it started was set ahead in time, so the first evolutionary step of spongebob's world would be in 1986, so yes they evolve way faster than any creature, and we also see that the sponge bob family chain is pretty short, the great great great grandpa of sponge bob was a early human (which sounds like a long time and it is, but very short in this context). So save the sweat and try not to debunk this theory I beg you. Edit 3: creatures in bikini bottom see a major evolution every 5 years, which is shocking considering spongebob's age right now, i keep on debunking myself Or maybe one day in bikini bottom is less than one day on ground according to their calander (maybe) so maybe the lifespan of sponge on ground maybe 5 years, and in bikini bottom they have a standard lifespan of 80 (bikini) years

There's an alternative to this theory that does add up with both science and lore, as proposes by Alex Bale: Bikini Bottom is a place with a high concentration of naturally evolved sea creatures. The main argument for this theory is the Season 10 episode "Feral Friends", where a phenomenon known as Neptune's Moon causes all Bikini Bottom inhabitants except for Sandy to devolve into primitive animals, which is just straight up referred to as "devolving". I personally quite like this one.

That doesn’t work though because they (modern current Bikini Bottom) has interacted with our own modern times (As Matpat showed early on.). They interact with David Hasselhoff for Pete’s sake. So for their primitive times to be sometime like the 70’s doesn’t add up. Unless they have centuries worth of cultural development in only a few decades, the timeline doesn’t work even if you put their primitive times as the time nuclear testing was happening. But considering they do have centuries and it has not been a century since the nuclear testing, the theory doesn’t work.

Shorter lifespan, which means advancing faster than humans,to prove this, look at sandy and plankton, they both build complex robotic machinery (and also plankton has cooking science while sandy chemistry)but even more proof is that of the “Le spatula” or the robotic spatula he get’s after his spatula needs a replacment.

Edit for a clearer picture since my first comment was a bit confusing: Maybe their history was sped up by the radiation.. As mat said, radiation causes rapid cell mutation, aka evolution. That would explain how they were able to evolve from prehistoric (cavefish) to the modern fish in the span of 40 years(nuke testing to the pop culture references). Also that would explain why spongebob looks so different from his parents. Also also, a giant snail (prehistoric gary) may be directly caused by the initial radiation, there are documented cases where radiation grew fish way past their normal size in fukushima, meaning the prehistoric setting was the initial fallout from the nukes. Mat briefly referenced radiation poisoning, the organ failure part, and that could explain the cultural differences from the medieval bikini bottom since time is not the factor for culture but generations. Shorter life spans will lead to more cultural differences within the same amount of time since if people die faster their kids have less culture to inherit making them interpret culture in their own ways leading to differences. Also, since they were now getting more advanced, and more standardized (some fish are spreading their population instead of mutating, though some mutations are still occuring like spongebob himself since radiation stays in the area) the nukes have probably stopped, thus this would be when the U.S. stopped dropping nukes. Also, maybe the nukes also killed the original jelly fish population that formed the lagoon, just to connect to mat's other theory. This would mean that their entire history, prehistoric to modern times, happened within the span of 50ish years due to radiation, and somewhat prove the original theory. Let's ignore the fact that radiation practically makes you sterile. But a possible solution would be maybe a one in a million fish (like the initial prehistory population, since the ocean has millions of creatures compared to the tens we saw in the prehistory) had the lucky mutation that makes their reproductive organs immune to damage to the point of infertility, thus inbreeding within these fish will still cause mutations with the added radiation and their reproductive systems are practically immune, passing that mutation on to their offspring, and continue the cycle of mutating and inbreeding. the original comment I left: What if, their "history" was accelerated due to radiation, like they were prehistoric when we first started dropping nukes, then as we stopped they continued to evolve rapidly because of radiation as you said radiation accelerates evolution. And we today see them as they are, making pop cultural references current to their time, and their prehistory was just 40 years before. Generations would live short due to radiation poisoning and that would explain the rapid cultural growth This would explain most of the inconsistencies.

@@Finalizor I'm not sure if there's more to it than what I said, but I can maybe simplify it/elaborate to be easily understandable. As mat said, raidation causes rapid cell mutation, aka evolution. So how would they measure their version of a 'year' for humans its a full cycle of 4 seasons and judged by the sun's position in the sky. Underwater you'd have to assume the sun's position in the sky would be less relevant but there must be cycles. Maybe the moon is the basis of their definition of a 'year'? that's a valid point, it would work alone, but we have seen in many episodes, as a day-to-day feature, they measuring time just like humans. Clocks with 24 hours, they counting 60 seconds, which means they measure time just like us. And the episode is named "Sponge Bob BC", it's not an specific time, but it stills Before Christ. And I can pretty much remember Squidward time travelling and the number of the year decreasing to hundred and hundred years ago. And to be honest, maybe in the West Bikini Bottom episode (that I don't remember the name) we may have seen the year specifically. So, again, it would work (also because it may explain the weird and plants we see in pre-historic bikini bottom) but as far as the lore itself seems to not care about it, it turns out invalid

Here's the issue with that, Spongebob has interacted with humans in the modern day in both the movies and even the special, which means that the modern day in Spongebob's world should correlate directly to our world. In fact, Spongebob meets real life living humans like David Hasselhoff in the movie and a ton of other people during their anniversary special which takes place in his modern day, and has episodes where modern day devices like the #2 pencil falls into the ocean, which means that if your theory is correct, then mankind just hasn't progressed at all in thousands of years and the real humans he met are immortal or time travellers. I'm gonna go ahead and go Occam's razor and say the theory doesn't hold water. This if further debunked by the sea life argument. While we haven't explored ALL of sea life, we know exactly what sea life is in Bikini Atoll, so if our "modern day" was Spongebob's prehistoric history, then the sea life we see in that part of the ocean should match up to how we see them today, which simply doesn't work because while we haven't explored all of Bikini Atoll, I think we would notice if there were those sorts of creatures in it. It wouldn't match the biology part of the video if the sea life that matches it today HAPPENS to be thousands of years later, while the one that should be in the Atoll Islands now are mutations. In fact, many species brought up in those episodes are extinct ocean species, which debunks it further.

IIRC sponges live for centuries or even millenia, so even if their lifetime sped up by a factor of a million, by magic, (3-30 a day) -thats a hundred thousand to million generations, (equivalent to about 1-20 million years in human generations) which is extremely tiny in evolutionary timescales.

You forget that canonically know how the people of Bikini Bottom gained their sentience, the Green Moon or Neptune's Moon caused the normal sea creatures to become what they are, that's why they have centuries of history, this naturally occurring radioactive phenomenon likely rested dormant on the seafloor eventually causing the mutations we see before tectonic shifting buried it letting the mutated life that had resulted flourish. In the episode we see "Neptune's Moon" appear almost like a comet making me theorize that it was only brought back up due to volcanic activity blasting it up, why it was able to suddenly de-evolve the characters doesn't really make any sense but maybe you could argue that Neptune's Moon has an alien origin or was actually created by the Gods that we know exists in SpongeBob's world.

When first gaining intelligence, The creatures of Bikini bottom wouldn’t immediately be able to talk. It could be that the prehistoric bikini bottom takes place right after the nuclear bombs drop and the different eras in SpongeBob go by a lot faster than ours did.

This is what I was thinking. Because we don't get a clear connection between human time and Bikini time, we have no way of knowing if they match up. Fish lifetimes are much shorter than humans in many cases so maybe the way they keep track of time is different.

*Hear me out* …. But what if their “prehistoric” and “medieval” periods took place not at the same time as *OUR* prehistoric and medieval periods but they happened *AFTER* the nuclear testing. Like the Nuclear testing is what *STARTED* the creatures to become sentient and to develop their own language and started their development and growth. Like how the *Big Bang* started our development, the nuclear testing started theirs.

This makes absolute sense too since radiation also tends to shorten life expectancy which means more generations of fish can be crammed into that time frame. It's also important to include episode 14a when Squidward goes into the future the date is set in 2017 so in the 18 years between the time jump multiple generations where made, and an all chrome future society was built.
