In Part 2 of RetroBlasting's Filmation Ghostbusters retrospective, Michael and Melinda look back on Schaper's 1986 action figure line. Figures They'd Fail. Vintage toy review. #RetroBlasting #FilmationGhostbusters
Everytime you guys put out a new video...I watch it and smile and then got find a couple of your older ones....Melindas dry humor delivery was the perfect contrast to your documentary style in the video...thumbs for certeain...
I have to admit I was probably one of the few that liked Filmation's Ghostbusters quite a lot. In Australia back in the 80's it was well programmed to not have either cartoons of 'Filmation' and 'Real' play against one another. 'Real' was always a Saturday morning cartoon that was fun to wake up to and eat breakfast with. While Filmation's Ghostbusters was a midweek late afternoon cartoon shown at around 6 to 7 pm. It was a good whining down cartoon and due to the ghost theme it was fun to watch as the sun went down. And for that I loved both shows for different reasons.
btamamura Ha ha, I'll give you one better. I still remember to this day, being the youngest out of 3 brothers. I was about 6-7 years old and I would try and get my brother to do the "Lets go Ghost Busters" slap with me. With the magic words and all. Of course, being 10 and 13, they weren't too keen on doing that. Ha ha.
when I was a kid, a local TV station had a contest where kids who wrote in could win a computer. It was to promote the filmation Ghostbusters show. Second place got the ghost command as well as two figures. Third place I think got a figure and the ghost buggy. I got second place prize. This meant a whole lot to me because I was a kid with poor self-esteem and I hardly want anything. It was the last year before I stopped playing with toys all and all and I loved it. Those toys were well made and I wish I still had them.
Boy, you could had gotten lots of money from the Ghost Command. I feel your loss, last decade I won a sweepstakes from Newtype magazine, got a Rei Ayanami CD but I believe my parents threw it away as it was covered and protected inside some old envelopes. Guess I can confirm this as I was searching around an area of the house were I believed it might had been but found nothing. :(
I can't ever remember seeing these toys in stores when I was a kid, but I do recall that they were available from Sears, JC Penney, and Service Merchandise in their annual holiday catalogs' toy sections. It seems odd that Schaper would shuffle them off to Europe before even attempting to see how well they would sell here in the US, but after their TOBOR robot very nearly sunk the company in 1978 due to poor quality control and sending out incomplete toys (Mine was missing many parts out of the box), I can definitely see why they pretty much stuck to producing preschool games like Cootie.
Never stopped to think how amazingly accurate and detailed this ghostbusters toyline was. I was able to get a few figures in package but wasn't easy! Had no idea the ghost buggy did all that too, crazy... now I need that. I saw the Toy Hunter Jordan selling the Ghost command center at a comic con for $1000 or maybe $2000, can't recall. Too bad I didn't pick that up! Oh right, I don't have that money. Great great video! Loved the cartoon.
Dude, I have been binge watching your episodes and I am LOVING these retrospectives. I love that you clearly do have a love and appreciation for these toys but aren't afraid to call out what doesn't work and your sarcasm mixes in well since even if it sounds like you're (retro)blasting these toys a new hole, it's done out a love and jokey humor. As for the toys. Never saw them. Too young to be in the crossfire to see them on shelves but holy heck, I gotta give them MASSIVE PROPS for giving the female characters actual hair. One thing I can tell you as a girl, hair on dolls can be so iffy when you continuously play and wash it as it gets stiff, loses it's color and luster, and sometimes dries to a completely different texture but those look GREAT so I guess they didn't cheap out on the type of hair they used for them. Also, I want to give you props for your theme song. The last second where someone is clearly getting bitch-slapped off screen had me do a double take when I first heard it.
I remember seeing these toys in the Sears Wishbook in 1986 and that was it. I never laid eyes on them in stores. Then again, I wasn't looking. I tried to watch the show and couldn't tolerate it. You're absolutely spot-on about that ridiculously long uniform transformation scene. It alone drove me away. I love your reviews to pieces, especially these shows & toy line dual reviews. I encourage you to continue. I would love to see a She-Ra review, a Bravestar review, or some other, obscure and forgotten line.
I always enjoy your history lessons about old toy lines. I didn’t even realize there was another ghostbusters toy line. I have to admit I would have loved the mystyria and futura to coexist with the real ghostsbusters, we sure needed some much needed cool female characters with that sausage fest😂
I never even knew they had toys because when they aired Ghostbusters here I never saw any of the commercials. I also thought they never did make any toys because I assumed the show failed because back then I thought it was a ripoff of The Real Ghostbusters. Now thanks to your Ghostbusters feature I've learned a lot and have gained more appreciation on Filmation's works.
Great video! I recently found Eddie Spenser's figure while sorting through some old toys, and for the longest time I couldn't remember which line he was part of...
I remember seeing these toys in the bargain bin at my local toy store and only being bought by clueless mothers mistaking the toys for the “Real Ghostbuster” toys.
if you guys ever decide to make a documentary I'll definitely back you guys on kickstarter. Retroblasting are true pros and I am addicted to this channel.
I remember being interested in these toys, but never went so far to ask for them or buy them because of the silliness of the show. Exactly as you stated in the earlier video, I could never figure out what it wanted to be. So I opted for the Real Ghostbusters.
Excellent video. I never seen any of these toys in the shops here in the 80's. They look amazing, especially the Ghost Command and the Ghost Buggy. If I had seen them I would definitely have wanted some. Are you planning on doing a Bravestarr video anytime soon? It's the only full collection of toys I have managed to keep.
I never actually got any of the toys from either Ghostbusters line, but I do remember wanting that GhostBuggy, specifically because of the goofy transformation gimmick.
I had a few figures from both lines. I used to make them fight over territory. Ghostbusters gang vs. The Real Ghostbusters gang. They went down in the fire that resulted in the Battle for Grayskull of 1988. I was the Sid type.
Great review guys! I never owned any of the Schaper/Tyco Ghostbusters when growing up, but I played with all of the toys between 2 friends. The toys were truly awesome! I do remember my friends had broken pieces already and were well aware of how fragile they were. Back in 2006 I started to track down all the toys and was able to complete them all except the Scare Scooter because I wasn't too interested in it. I still want it to complete the series but it's a low priority. I got the Ghost Command unused in an open box. I haven't applied the decals yet. I'm thrilled to finally have it because it brings back many good memories :)
i liked both ghostbusters cartoons, but for some reason i really wanted the toys from the filmation version, not the movie/cartoon versions. i never found them ever, great video as usual.
In your GIJoe lineup (pushes nerd glasses up) there were 16 figures in the '82 line. Your missing the two cobra figures, and mail away Cobra Commander. But you are correct that there were 13 Joes. Was confused a little on either that was Flash or Grand Slam, then I got to the end with the drivers. Then it hit me, you got Flash and version 2 Grand Slam (which is the '83 figure).
@@timothyward8695 Lesser is referring to the moment in this video where the original G.I. Joe lineup is shown in comparison to the Ghost Busters lineup regarding female figures at 6:26
the series were ok, but i also get desperate about the ridiculous uniform secuence. the gorila charscter seemed more humane than the other two clowns, hahaha also liked the «cazacarcacha» (the old ghost car). GOod video Rbn!!!!
Flimation's Ghostbusters toys were great the Ghost Command playset was similar to Castle Grayskull as far as levels are concern. Today's action figure collections lacked fortress or battle base playsets.
This was really good. I to never liked the Filmation version of Ghostbusters. This spawned a childhood memory. I recall asking my mother for the Ghostbusters lunch box that they had out at the time. Well...I'm pretty sure you know where I'm going with this. When my mother brought home the Filmation version I didn't want to sound unappreciative. But boy was I pissed when friends would point that out a lunch time LOL. I've never really asked my mom either if she new the difference. But at the end of the day she did technically get me what I asked for.
I dont remember seeing them at all in Circus World at Hickory Hollow,Toys R Us,or even the store at 100 Oaks,Harvey's I think, remembering.the winged red horse for some reason
Great toys, I don't remember ever seeing this show in the UK, we had Voltron, Bravestar and the real Ghostbusters show but not this, very strange, brilliant review as always..
I really liked that show. I DO NOT remember the toys AT ALL (if that is any indication of their success). What a shame. Incidentally, thank you both for this retrospective. Very insightful.
+MrFree2BeMe1 I thought the exact same thing when I saw that! Actually, it looks like Belfry and Brat-a-Rat got together one evening and Imp was the result...
Hi, nice review as always. Just one note: Futura's scooter didn't have sounds, it had a light in the base. The Ghost Command is huge, loaded with accessories and furniture, but is also extremely fragile. Ciao
So i never had any kenner ghostbusters toys or schapers ghostbusters toys, but I gotta say, these wouldve been cool to have as kid. They wouldve been cool to play together
What people don't know about this show is that it was an animated version of a live action tv show that was on years before. That is actually where Dan Akroyd got the idea for the movie.
+RetroBlasting I know you have done reviews of early Star Wars toy lines. But do you plan on doing any reviews of other 1970s toy lines like Big Jim or some off the MEGO toy lines?
Lol @ Kong's rape faces :D I remember liking the series back then. It was one of the very few things I saw together with my sister, but we liked TRGB way more though. I think by the time this series was aired in my country, it had already been cancelled in the US and I don't remember seeing merchandise in the stores. This is the first time I see the car, which looks awesome btw
with a lot of work and if it came out maybe sooner or later then real ghost busters this show could have made it. i love the shows art work and i had a few toys as a kid they were good.
I think that whole more Females their first wave would come with ExoSquad with 3 females in the first wave, all had top command Able Squad next to J.T. Marsh their male leader. Nara Burns female was 2ed in command. As far as the Neo-Sapiens were concerned they were all genetically engineered Eunuchs including Marsala the only Neo-Sapien that was a part of Able Squad. Yeah, this was a Saturday morning cartoon. Besides that, they were not afraid of killing the main characters too. ANd those ExoSquad/Robotech crossover toys was because Playmate decided not to tell Universal Studios the owners of ExoSquad and Harmony Gold the powers of Robotech that they were going to coss their toys anyways. Oh, the 90's.
Ohh for the 80s to come back. I was wondering if you have done a review of Captain powers toy and show? I see the clips in the intro? Or a micro review of NES's Duck Hunt. I was all thumbs to play Mario brothers but I loved Duck Hunt. If I could play that still I think I would be. LOL. Thanks for the video.
I´m still shocked with the damn car!!!! Jesus!!!! Schaper should´ been the ones in charge of the Ghostbuster´s Fire house and Ecto-1.. and! Jesuschrist... The TMNT Technodrome!!!
If we look at Filmation's shows we can see that they were quite progressive, women rarely were damsels in distress and we could see them in action roles and positions of authority. Those toys were so good that you can think like they are from a recent line for adult collectors, like Masters of the Universe Classics or the Transformers Master Piece line.
Yeah, the Filmation's Ghostbusters cartoon absolutely sucked, but the toys do look very cool and superior to Kenner's The Real Ghostbusters line (which I still collected as a kid, because they were better than nothing). Also loved the inclusion of G'n'R 's "Night Train" at the end! Melinda is awesome, does she have a sister? Happy New Year to you both, Mike and Melinda!
I think Dan told the producers of the movie. Is not the same as in the original Ghostbusters cartoon. But when the song said who you gonna call? Ghostbusters. Not the song let go ghostbusters let go. But when they made the cartoon title The real ghostbusters. That's why who heard on the 1st epsidoe of the cartoon. Now that's a history
>the Grumpy Old Fan mutters darkly to himself in the badly-lit corner of the room< If I EVER get my hands on the guy who kept cool shows, comics, and toys (like these) from crossing the border into Mississippi, I'll CURB-STOMP HIM WITH MY GOLF SHOES ON! Brazza-frazza-razza!
Also do you know if that type of mold is harmful, say to us, or if it has any risk of spreading on the whole figure or even another toy if it’s too close? This is why I was a kenner kid, because those toys would last and be made with the best plastic. R.I.P. Kenner.
Ya know, when I was a kid, I told my parents that I want a Ghostbusters figure which I meant 'the real' but instead my parents wrongly bought me a Filmation version... What a mixed up! 😁
This is Leiastar1234 on Xbox live. The Ghost buggy was named Geebe and could turn into a spaceship In one episode. Jessica reminds me of April O"Neil. It would been neat if they made Hauntquarters. The crack in Jessica's ass is for the Ghost buggy.. in on episode is Peter Cullen as voice.
