One little detail that I liked in this video, is at 5:00 in the box of doughnuts, you can see they even animated them shifting in the box as Kiriko moves and spins it around. You see it twice that I noticed. When she's shifting it to set it on the counter, and then after she spins it in place. I also really loved how you could see the slight blue glow in the old man and little girl's eyes, when they are under the influence of the Fox Spirit's power. Since her character is a support character, she tends to provide boosts to her allies, so they let the cinematic reflect that as well.

To answer the lightbulb colour change, the normal lighting seems to come from the center of the hallway ceiling. The red lights are at the corners of the hallway ceiling, giving me the impression that the electricity went out and those red lights were just emergency back up lights.

The reason Kiriko and her mother were able to see everything going on is because her unit is the door at the end of the hall rather than the ones lining the hall. It took me a bit of thinking to figure that out until I noticed when Kiriko teleports away, that the light is illuminating the door at the very end, like it's trying to draw your attention to it.

The cinematics for Overwatch 2's new heroes seem to be drawing inspiration from the character's personalities to determine the tone of the shorts themselves. Kiriko's short has a sort of split tone, which represents the two sides of Kiriko. Half is gentle and calm, with the soft piano, warm colours and shallow depth of field. And the other half is this youthful badass ninja, with crazy EDM music, cool colours, and manga styled title cards accentuating the action. Junkerqueen's short can be seen doing a similar thing, but I won't spoil it for you. Just know that her short is very heavily influenced by her personality. I like it, it makes the shorts feel really unique among each other. Hope Blizzard pull something out their asses to make an actual Netflix series happen. Like what League of Legends did with Arcane.
@captaink8093
@captaink8093 Год назад
An overwatch show in the art style of their cinematics would be fucking awesome, it doesn't even have to be one long overarching story, one season with 12 episodes and a story with 1 or 2 episodes around 30 minutes long each that contains one or several characters would suffice.
@UnknownShiny

yea just a short series, perhaps around kiriko, genji and hanzo since they all have relations, if they were to make it longer perhaps have it include kirikos group that fights that gang and also hanzo and genji but they wouldn’t necessarily be as interesting depending on which timeline would run at the same time

I understand that this is a more technical breakdown of the animation, but I also want to point out something that revolves around the storytelling part of the animation. I think intentionally making the little girl be deaf speaks volumes about Kiriko’s compassion. The animators could’ve easily just animated this short with a dialogue scene but went the extra mile to animate sign language. There is a reason for that. It means that she spent the time learning sign language fluently just for a couple of her neighbors. Learning another language is very difficult, especially since this is a visual based language and not an auditory language. Not many people are willing to run that hard marathon of learning a new language fluently which reveals just how caring a person Kiriko is.

A little detail I liked: at 8:36, when Mr. Yoshida lifts his arm to embrace + comfort his granddaughter, you can see Kiriko standing in the background. Once she saw that Mr. Yoshida was alive and well, you can see her fists clench, which transitions to the next scene, and it REALLY shows just how ANGRY she is. I mean, how can you not be if you just witnessed your neighbor get shot and almost die. (The heartbeat in the background speeding up also adds to it, which I really liked.) Also some context, I'm sure some people have talked about it in the comments, but the move where Kiriko summons those blue torii gates is her Ultimate ability, "Kitsune Rush", and the way it functions in-game is that it increases your attack speed, movement speed, and reduces your cooldowns, and it overall feels like a big adrenaline rush (as demonstrated by Mr. Yoshida and his granddaughter running at the Hashimoto at full speed with no fear). I just think it's funny that they depict the Ultimate the same way it feels in-game, it makes it feel that much more realistic.

Something I was surprised you didn't mention: the discussion between kiriko and her mother has the two of them on opposite sides of the screen with the counter in the middle of the shot. Her mother's side is lit with a light from under the cabinet. It is functional and conservative, while kiriko's side is lit with haphazardly hung purple string lights. They are impetuous and free. It's another way to show us the character's outlook on life without exposition. I thought it was quite clever.

A tiny filmmaking technique I noticed the first time I watched this cinematic was the classic 'shifting of perspectives' camera angle. When Kiriko is back in her apartment and her mom turns around to face her, the camera starts with the view of Kiriko over the mom's left shoulder, but then the camera slowly moves to the right so that eventually Kiriko's face is seen over her mom's right shoulder. That's the 'shifting of perspectives' shot, where you show through a camera angle, to represent a character changing their mind about something. In this case, her mom changes her mind about how she sees her daughter, and the camera move reflects that.

The light change is probably emergency lighting taking over in the hallway when the normal lights go out. A nice detail if that is what it is.
@happyninja42
@happyninja42 Год назад
Yeah they are the emergency lights. If you look closely, you can see the normal/white light bulbs are all centered in the ceiling, down the center of the hallway. But the red lights are fixed to the walls along the sides of the hall. That's pretty typical for emergency lighting. Since they are usually lower luminosity, they put them near the boundaries of the area, so you can more easily see where corners/objects/etc are. If they were placed centrally, they might not illuminate well enough to actually light up the walls of the hallway, which would make a mass evacuation more hazardous. I've even seen some places design the emergency lights along the ground, with the idea that you just simply follow the trail of lights along the ground to the exit. I think I even saw one design where they cycled off/on in a pattern that suggested a flow direction, indicating which way is the quicker way for you to get to an exit, from whatever location you are at in the building.

A great part of the part where her eyes glow, is that it is a subversion of expectations. In the game those spirit arches are created by summoning a spirit fox. The arches then buff your team if they stand in them. As a player when you see her summoning the arches you expect the spirit fox to come out, but then the girl runs with the axe and it is a great comedic moment but also is exactly inline with what it does in the actual game.

So I just watched your take from 2 years ago on Overwatch's short Dragons and the guy who grabbed the phone and said "I'm going to call for back up" is the same guy who ran into the bronze bell in the Dragons short lol. Loved your take on these man. Keep up the amazing work!

Junker queen next maybe? Also Kiriko, genji and hanzo kinda grew up together. I believe that kiriko's mother is the one who actually trained Genji. Kiriko's town is also rigt under "Hanamura" wich is the location from the short "Dragons"
@erickim1739
@erickim1739 Год назад
I'm pretty sure Kiriko's mom trained hanzo, genji, and kiriko at combat. However Kiriko is the only one that was trained by her grandmother and the fox spirit. Thats why she's able to fight AND heal since the kitsune is a protecting spirit.

Great episode Chris, thank you very much! But you missed one really cool detail: when Kiriko teleports and the lights went out and came back on flickering, you can see here profile behind the bad guys in the hallway blinking up for a second, like in a horror movie (at around 4:20-4:25 in the cinematic). This is so awesome and had me really like: "oh shit, you guys are in DEEP trouble now!"

A good example of breaking the 180°-rule on purpose is at 11:00. It emphasizes the perspective change of Kiriko's mother.

the reason why the mom has a sword is because she is/was a sword master, and the one who trained Genji, Hanzo and Kiriko in swordsmanship. Hanzo swore to never use a blade again after what happened with his brother Genji, Genji still uses blades with his own twist, and like this cinematic mentions, Kiriko stopped training to focus on the fox spirit side of things like her grandma

A nice detail you overlooked is that the one who tried calling for backup is the very same person that ran into the bell while trying to call during the Dragons cinematic while Hanzo was taking down the other members.

To put it for you her grandma was the caretaker of the fox spirit shrine and was able to summon the fox spirit and tought kiriko healing Her mother tought her fighting and also taught genii and hanzo from dragons short a while back since they are cousin So she added them together to get a healing yet powerfull warrior When her grandmother passed she passed on the fox spirit to kiriko so she has the fox spirit Even though it wasn't shown the blue shrine is the fox spirit shrine and in the game it boosts projectile speed reload speed and just a normal speed boost
