The 4th wall breaking rlly fits her character, since her ingame is much older perhaps this is her telling u the story of how she won the reckoning, like how when you tell your friends a story u add extra details in between. Also she is basically COMPLETELY oblivious to danger, when she gets healed ingame she's like "awww I wanted a scar" like- U WERE ABOUT TO DIE.
@ricoblanco3117
@ricoblanco3117 Год назад
@@redr6107 I don't know if I agree with the 4th wall breaking fitting her. If they wanted it to be like she was telling her story, they would have made that more clear and more satisfying. I still think the cinematic was good, but with them breaking the 4th wall so often, and in key moments of the fight, I couldn't get into it at all. I also don't think they can have a character that is oblivious to damage and still show that the impacts are affecting them. I think the in-game stuff was put there to show us how much of a badass she wants to be, not to show that she doesn't feel as much pain.
@CrisHermetica
@CrisHermetica Год назад
@@redr6107 Yeah for me it fits her really well, also the part that she's not in danger in any time... of course she isn't, i mean you know she's the Junker Queen from the start it's on the name of the video, and she already told you that you have to win the Reckoning to become the junker queen/king. Also, almost every hero is like 10 times stronger than a regular soldier/warrior or whatever you want, of course she can't lose against a fat guy sitting in a huge robot.
@boltman1195
@boltman1195 Год назад
Not all fights have to and should be the same. She is stronger than them, she says that during the fight and she proves it. There are plenty of people spoon fed in life or cheat their way to success... Those who work hard and actually survive each day are the strongest.

I liked the 4th wall breaks, it had a feel of deadpool to it and felt like it fit the character. Others have pointed out that it feels like she's telling a story to us: like we met her in a bar and she's explaining her rise to power over a beer. Between that and the comic book style freeze frames that are like borderlands it definitely has a different feel to the other cinematics but I over all I enjoyed it

honestly I don't mind the fourth wall breaks in this cinematic, if anything they add a lot to the Junker Queen as a character. I think a lot of her character is very similar to someone like deadpool, using comedy and fourth wall breaks to cover up a deeper personality formed from a traumatic past. I think the start of the cinematic does a lot to illustrate this with her waking up from a nightmare and playing it off through the fourth wall. Also I think Junker Queen having an easy time in the arena is meant to show how fake the Junker King is and how he hasn't had to face actual hardships the way she has as someone who grew up in the wasteland outside of junkertown. When looking at the cinematic from a purely action based perspective it does all take away from it a bit, but it does a lot to showcase her as a character and provides valuable exposition to understand her motivations and backstory, which is in fact the true intention of the cinematic.
@redr6107

This, while it may not be the best for story telling it fits her personality and story very well.

The fourth wall breaking is also part of the Junkertown house style. Look at the short with Junkrat & Roadhog. It's VERY Looney Tunes / silly morning cartoon, and having this short harken to it while being a more serious piece feels consistent with what they've already done.

Interesting analysis. It's such a shame none of this is canon to the gameplay, like much of the lore for overwatch. Hell, she doesn't even do fourth wall breaks while you're playing here. So a lot of these points would hold weight if only blizzard themselves were consistent with the direction.

7:05 “Why would she do that?” She pushed Geiger out of the way because she mentioned earlier when they first clashed that she liked the way he fought and she wanted him alive when she takes over.
@akkiko
@akkiko Год назад
I feel her interactions with Meri and Geiger highlighted the differences between her and Mason pretty well. Mason is very clearly someone who fights dirty, doesn't hesitate to sacrifice others for his own sake (That line at the start between where her dad(?) spoke about how they fought in the war together + Meri) and cheats the system to stay in power. She fought fair, honestly and was thinking ahead- that she didn't want to lose talent in the process of her taking the throne. A good leader recognizes talent and seeks to retain it. A bad one uses it and throws it away.

The fourth wall breaks are the best thing about it. Without them, we lose the entire charm of Junker Queen as a character, because she's wacky and fun and not serious at all. This style of cinematic is genius, and it's in the same vein as Junrat's and Roadhog's silly cinematics. It's supposed to be fun and kooky, not at all like Kiriko's inspirational cinematic. Junker Queen's isn't supposed to be so serious

Haven't finished the breakdown portion of the video, but I wanted to answer the question about thoughts regarding the fourth wall breaking. It did kinda bug me on first watch, but on second watch an idea as to why it was done came to mind. I'm not sure I'm going to explain it well, but when it occurred to me.. I thought if that's what they were going for, it's kinda clever how they did this. (Note: She's definitely younger in this cinematic than what she is in-game since it's definitely a flashback to her past.) She's telling the story of how she became the Junker Queen by winning the reckoning, and the whole fight sequence is being shown rather than told. You know how when you're telling a story, you might add little commentary bits to spruce it all up? I think that's what the 4th wall breaking bits are. For example, when she looks back at the camera to tell the viewer "King Howl has never lost- not in 13 years of rule." It's kind of like she took a pause from telling the story, just to tell you the guy had been undefeated for quite some time before resuming. So I feel like any time she addresses the camera, it's a brief pause in the story to add in little bits of info. I dunno if I'm explaining it well, since I don't make films or anything.. but.. The visual story telling is the meat of the story, with the 4th wall breaking being her interrupting the story to add in little bits.. is how I interpreted it. I never saw this cinematic; dunno how I missed it because I love when they do these. Judging by her personality in-game, this cinematic and how they did it- I feel- tracks well with her as a character.

the thing you said about her never being in danger: this whole scene is a flashback, the playerbase already knows that she is the current Junkerqueen", so her winning wasn't in doubt from the start it's basically her own telling of how she got there

I felt like it was a documentary and the camera was following her around. As she was going through the fight she'd give her thoughts to engage the audience. I agree it was a bit too much, but seeing it as a "documentary" made it more immersive. The fact that she was "fine" taking a beating and appearing OP, I think it's because she's a tank in OW2, which makes sense she can withstand that much damage... All in all, I agree that breaking the forth wall that many times wasn't needed, but the cinematic is 10/10. Thanks for the video!

4th wall breaks aren't for everyone but for her wacky character,/personality it fits so well. Plus this is a memory/ her telling a story from her POV of how she became queen and what the wastelands are like for ppl like her. I was all for it. The action isn't the focal point. It's her character and how she affects other ppl compared to the now former Junker King. Makes sense that they don't want the action to be taken too seriously. The action is really just to show off her kit in a fancy way. OW cinematics always manage to do that.

Junker queen is a perfect example of 4th wall breaking alongside deadpool. There was a lot but it was necessary information and telling it in that way allowed the junker queen to be seen as a more joking character, doesn’t make her any less of a threat as she still disassembled the mech with her magnet. Her kind hearted nature still shows through with her sparing the junker with the mask rather than killing him which is almost a normalcy in junkertown and also taking the metal sheet for him as well when she could’ve easily let him get hit. She’s kind in a genuinely well made “respect for the strong” type character. The 4th wall breaking only added to her character and junkertown as a whole as she is the face of it and is an example of the average. Just like how junkrat and roadhog aren’t meant to be taken seriously, junker queen isn’t either but still shows strength and prowess required for a tank character in ow without making her appear as a practical joke

As someone who loves mockumentary shows I thought the fourth wall breaks were fun, and they give Junker Queen and her cinematic their own unique attitude and flair (which they seem to be leaning into a lot more for the newest characters). Imo it's not supposed to be a tense action scene where you're afraid for Junker Queen - it's more like a Deadpool fight where the action serves as sweet visual flavor to the story the character is narrating to the audience, to the point where it almost feels more like a violent style of slapstick comedy. Also can we recognize just how great the soundtrack to this cinematic is? Especially when the fight is just starting and she KO's her first opponent, that guitar is just fantastic.

I feel like the fourth wall break was at least a degree necessary, just on the grounds as its giving us context we wouldn't have if it was told by someone bound by it. Could they have given us announcer characters instead of having her talk? Sure, what the announcers say (I assume) would either be Junker King's hype men or otherwise not give us any context to the characters history beyond the opening shot in the desert. Like for example, Queen placing such emphasis on him "never losing *in thirteen years*" whereas an announcer could just say "He's never lost" or some variation. I say all that just trying to play devils advocate for the 4th wall. 😅I'm not trying to act like I know a lot.

I just found this channel and I must say I love it so far! I know many people already commented about the fourth wall breaking but I must agree with them that this is pretty much part of Junker Queen's character, I personally love that she breaks it. Lore-wise we all knew she won this battle, we knew this long before she was even introduced in the game (characters like Junkrat would already mention the Junker Queen in voice lines and other cinematics). The people of Junkertown also tend to have very laid-back and not too serious cinematics (this is mainly connected to how they live and how many many of them are quite literally crazy because of a disaster that happened some years back). I will agree that she does feel too OP and in no danger through the video, but maybe that is precisely the point, she is the danger. How else do you become the Junker Queen in an unfair fight, right? Now off to watch some more of these!

I really liked the "soft" fourth wall. It felt much more stylized than usual, and made this short stand out a bit more among the others in the series. To me, it read more as a facet of her confidence and sense of control--which is pretty central to her character. Also, her theme song opening with the lines "This is the legend of the Junker Queen," to me, gives the impression that this is an after-the-fact, origin story--that is being presented in the middle of the action. Something akin to a story about something that happened in the past, but is being presented as if it is being told by a character in the present who is reminiscing about something. Like Forrest Gump, the Wonder Years, MHA, how I met your mother, etc. Only, there's another level of abstraction: the narrator is narrating it as she's experiencing it. And that sort of liquid quality between what is diegetic and not is interesting to me. Jarring. But I think that's the point.

I think its more about how calmly the characters talk during action scenes. They're fighting each other to the death, but talk so softly to each other. Same thing with the kiriko cinematic, when she's talking to the enemies while fighting them, it's so soft and casual. When it shouldn't be. Imo

I think most people were surprised when she didn't kill them in a good way. Yes it's Overwatch but she people still get brutally killed. Junkerqueen everyone sort of expected to be ruthless. Her having a sense of honor and vulnerability while still being extremely strong was a big surprise. And yes this is set in Australia obviously. The omnics turned Australia into a Mad Max land

I think the 4th wall breaks are nice, it gives us a look at the character and an insight into Overwatch Australia's post omnic crisis world. We get to understand what her thoughts are, and see how she enacts them.

Also, in other representations of 4th-wall breaking like Deadpool, they have the entire movie to balance it. Not to say Ryan Reynolds wasn't great, just that Overwatch cinematics don't have that much time. So I understand that it can be distracting to some people.

I think partially the comedic and fourth-wall breaks with the junker Queen, but also Junkrat and Roadhog, is to contrast it to the tragedy of their situation so as not to make it too depressing. The Junkrat/Roadhog cinematic "The Plan" is straight up a homage to Looney Tunes (not surprising since it was directed by Terran Gregory, who is a big Looney Tunes fan), but also how Junkrat, Roadhog and Hammond (the super-intelligent hamster piloting a battle mech, who canonically lives in Junker Town and fights in the Junker Town arena) are portrayed in the game. Mad Max vibes with a comedic spin on it. Also Tank Girl influences probably. When you look at what happened to the Australian Outback after the Omnic crisis, it's a really depressing situation. The Australian government was unable to rebuild all of the land, so they didn't even try and just left the Outback to fend for itself. Some people refused to leave and try to make a living in the partially irradiated wastes as best they can. It's a hard and often tragic and short existence. But, because Overwatch's tone is overall hopeful, despite the dark parts, they contrasted this with humor for the characters based in the Australian Outback. Since the Junker Queen is not as crazy as Junkrat, nor as quiet and stoic as Roadhog, and unlike Hammond can talk, they decided to go for making her scrappy, tough - and breaking the fourth wall as her comedic shtick, to go with the overall feel of the Junker Town characters. Or to put it another way, you're not meant to be as immersed with the Junker Town characters as you are with the other Overwatch characters. ;) Of course, your mileage may vary if you like that approach or not.

About the video: As Deadpool being one of my favourite charachters ever made, I can totally agree with you with the bad use of 4th wall breaking, Deadpool uses it at his best, would've been cool here too if used better and just a couples time, I think at the beginning as introduction and at the end as "Junkers's propaganda"... now that I think more about it I guess also max other 2 mid combat, but well placed, in the "peaceful" moments. Short's rating: 8/10 imo; if the 4th wall breaking was better I would've given a 9/10 :)

One thing I love about this short is that they really demonstrate how she’s a tank character. In Honor and Glory, they show Reinhardt being a tank through his shield and protecting people with his armor. But since Queen doesn’t have armor or a shield, she just keeps taking hits and keeps on fighting. They also sort of show off her team buff ability (Commanding Shout) by inspiring the other fighters to fight back against Howl.

Hmm with everyone talking about the fourth wall break I want to talk about why you said there was only action and no substance when I think they did show it with how she interacted with the king two lackeys. In the beginning when she twisted the axe instead of chopping his head off and when she was talking to meri about how she’d never shoot her friends in the back right before mason shoots her Then at the end she saves the guy and gets hit and that could of killed her. These little bits in the fight show that she is just after mason to get justice on what happened to her, she does not want to kill them because she has no problem with them they didn’t do anything wrong to her. Also at the end you said it with how she gave mason water instead of just nothing like he did to her. That’s my thoughts on that.

Like others said, the 4th wall thing helps in explaining the whole story in such a short time, it also brings some humour in all that, but most and foremost, it fits the character. The song is punk, she's clearly in the punk rock kind of sphere and it's about not having any rules that'll bound you. Ofc she'll break it and not respect that "silly rule" of cinematography in the same spirit than Deadpool disrespecting/making fun of everything. It's surprising, yes, but it doesn't take anything away for me and ofc she'll win and not be in any trouble: it's an Overwatch cinematic about a character in game, they always "end well/in favour of the chara". It's not like breaking the 4th wall is taking the drama that wouldn't be there anyway. It was a nice change and like for every short, it's fitting :).

The fourth Wall Breaking is just her telling a story of how she became junker queen, for in Overwatch Lore Shes been the queen already a long time, Junkrat and Roadhog have been trying ti get back into her good graces since Junk blew some things up. Hey Chris, i´ve got something to recomend to ya: It´s an animation called Hellsreach a warhammer 40k story by Richard Boylan(that´s his channels name) and consists of 13 parts. It´s an wonderful animation, completely fanmade, and it tells an amazing story, even tho it´s quite long. If it´s too long, that channel made another, wonderful production, actually with actors and in real life and so on, which is just about five minutes long. I would love it if you would to one or even both of those masterpieces, since the quality is unbelievable, and he gets way to less appreceation for what he does.

I agree that the 4th wall talking broke inmersion but in this case it was used because this story was already spoiled in the junkrat cinematic, he talked about the queen and how they would betray her so this story we already know what would happen in the end, so this video was the equivalente to the main character explaining the how that event happened

The fourth wall breaks were chosen as the directive choice because she's been a background character in the game since the "junkertown" map was released in 2017. We already know she's the Queen, so I feel to have filmed in a more "realistic" way wouldn't have had as much impact for fans of the game and the characters in it.

Hm, I asked myself why it didn't bother me the constant breaking of the 4th wall, and I think I figured it out. So.. when I watched the cinematic for the first time, and she just woke up and spoke to us, I was like: "Oh they're trying something different cool cool, this is more of a story told by her, okay okay, I like it." Also now I'm sooo tempted to pick up my 35mm and try to make some cinematic shorts lol

Only time breaking the fourth wall annoyed me was in She-Hulk. I didnt mind it here, it was how they chose to break up the animation which otherwise woulda just been one straight fight scene. Maybe it was near the limit of what I would have found acceptable, but honestly She Hulk is the only thing I've seen that used it too much.

you say that the 4th wall breaks made you not worry about if she would win or not, but overwatch players, even from early overwatch 1 stuff we knew of a character called 'junker QUEEN' and she would have been shown and seen before this cinematic, we all knew she was going to win from the start, it's about HOW she won and what happened to her family to give us info about the character, at no point did any of us fear she would lose XD the 4th wall breaks are more her telling us her story as we see it happen :3 and yes this is future Australia XD and was heavily influenced by borderlands XD

The fourth wall breaking doesn't bother me in the slightest. Junkertown is a madhouse full of crazy people, and they always incorporate borderline cartoony humour for anything related to it. I think it's fairly easy to distinguish the fourth wall breaks and mentally separate them as the character's thoughts. Or as though it's a retelling of the story and the visuals are just accompanying that retelling. The style of a character focused work like this needs to match the character and their background, and an aussie psycho with weapons and armor made of scrap metal, road signs and sports equipment feels difficult to play straight and serious. I think this was a masterful cinematic.

I understand your perspective on the fourth wall thing, but as far as the feeling that she wasn’t in danger, you’re right. I think they were trying to portray that exact feeling. That blow to her on the magnet is the only one that has any sort of emphasis in sound or visuals. She really is in danger at that moment, so while she’s in danger she both doesn’t look at the camera and only speaks to herself.
@Goomsies
@Goomsies Год назад
The reason that she keeps breaking the fourth wall is that this is her retelling the story of how she became the queen. These events are in the past. Her breaking the fourth wall was adding context to everything that was happening. She was never in danger because everything had happened already.
@samundef3500
@samundef3500 Год назад
@@Goomsies All of the OW cinematically are retelling still of past events. Ofc the characters are never actually in danger, that’s completely irrelevant to the internal narrative’s stakes. That’s like saying any character can’t be in danger in any movie where there’s a sequel. Just because the outcome is predetermined on a meta level doesn’t mean you can’t have a character be in danger within a story and then portray that feeling.
@Goomsies
@Goomsies Год назад
@@samundef3500 So you're not understanding what I'm saying. What makes this cinematic different is that it's LITERALLY her retelling her story. Imagine you're sitting at a campfire with her and she's telling you what happened. That is what's happening, and the cinematic is your imagining of the events.
@samundef3500
@samundef3500 Год назад
@@Goomsies wait what are you talking about? Are you saying that because of the ending montage? Right off the bat we start with a flashback, so you’re claiming that she’s retelling a story through a flashback where she begins her story with her having a flashback.

I'm not a big fan of the 4th wall breaking. It might be that they tried to tell us in a unique way that Junker Queen likes to speak to her self and imagine that there's someone she's talking to. Some people do that. But whatever is the case, it was a little strange and it felt a bit disorienting sometimes. Anyway, great breakdown once again. Keep it up Crhis, I'm looking forward to seeing you react to new future Overwatch cinematics.

Honestly, I don't mind the fourth wall breaks, but the problem for me with the cinematic is the fact she's like... whispering the whole time? I feel like THAT'S the part that doesn't fit in. If her tone matched her more within the action, while still breaking the fourth wall, I think it could've been a lot better. Like Deadpool, for example, sure he'll whisper to the crowd sometimes, but if he's in the middle of fighting, he's not all that quiet.

I was talking about fourth wall breaks with my friend the other day, right after we finished She Hulk. I’m a fan of fourth wall breaks but I had an issue with junker queen’s and She Hulk fourth wall breaks. I feel like they over used them, or the breaks lasted too long. Deadpool did them wonderfully, they were short and had witty humor thrown in, 2 seconds breaks them back to the action. But she hulk and junker queen felt like the fourth wall break dialogue was just narration, like it didn’t really accomplish anything with their fourth wall breaks
@animo358

See but we kinda needed the 4th wall breaks? I feel like the confusion comes from you not playing the game. We've known.... "About" the Junker Queen for like...4-5 years now? Posters of her and audio ques from around the Junkertown map. But we never knew like her actual name or character beyond that. So when you actually end up seeing her animated, you know she's going to become Queen, if she isn't already. So the breaks serve two real functions, showing the ease that she's having with this fight after almost a decade and a half fighting for her life in the wastes, and to help inform us about the Wastes and Junkertown as a whole. Cause honestly it's the weirdest part about Overwatch as a whole. Which is impressive considering there are spirit dragons and fox's and sentient robots. I like this style of cinematic in general cause.....can't remember if you did the Junkertown cinematic, but it seems like a stylized choice since that one had handmade Junkrat garbage edits and hand drawings. Basically it's now letting you know, if a future cinematic starts off like this..... We are in Australia.
