Hello James, love your reactions, but I have a question: How do you watch those? Because I really would love to see what you have to say about Hong Kong and asian movies in general, China, and more specifically Hong Kong are sadly overlooked a bit but they have some of the most beautiful cinematography and the best, adrenaline pumping and creative fight scenes EVER. I'd love to see your reactions to movies like Election, Throw Down, The Killer, Tiger Cage, A Better Tomorrow and more, but sadly some of these are only aviable on streaming sites that I can't post here publically lol Would you ever watch these? And if so, is the sites over which they are aviable a problem?

Love the details when Fletcher asked Nieman about his parent’s history. Fletcher making sure Nieman’s family was not involved in music allows him to take that “fatherly” role over Nieman. That allows him to use extra manipulation and hurtful tactics while somewhat seeming justifiable in the eyes of Nieman, considering he has no external musical sources to learn from, outside of Fletcher.

All I know is, in the music circles (especially for anyone playing drums), this movie was literally the second coming. All they talked about in 2014, was Whiplash. A lot of discussion was had on if the approaches were right or wrong, what does it take to become the best in a highly saturated and competitive profession, and if the ending was a positive one, a sad one, a dying dream of a man who got hit by a car, or something else entirely.

I had a music teacher in junior high who was exactly like this. He abused the students physically and verbally on a regular basis, humiliated us in front of our classmates, all in the name of making us better. It sucked all the joy out of drumming until I got to high school, where my band teacher was a saint by comparison. This is a brilliant movie, but it was hard to watch because it brought it all back. Anyone who thinks Damien Chazelle was exaggerating his portrayal of the character is wrong. That said, I love that the movie doesn't take the easy route of just treating him like a villain, but instead letting us understand what drives him, what would drive a student to worship him and put up with the abuse, and then ask the question, "What is pursuing your dreams worth?"

Just made it to the end of the vid..... Yeah definitely don't see it as depressing. If I'd define the Dad's look... It would be worried. It doesn't read as amazement of your child having an outstanding performance at a concert. I think it is of concern that he's being pushed to his limit and being great at it. I agree, I feel like the look from his father at the end was him finally really seeing him as an artist. Not to say he wasn't supportive, but due to the conversation they had as a family about their sons athletic career and the clear pride in that and almost dismissal of Miles musical accomplishment it just seemed like he finally really saw him. It was his moment of truly becoming the drummer Miles and Fletcher wanted him to be. Anyone in the creative industry I think has had that struggle of their passion being dismissed by people they care about and I was honestly so glad they showed him witnessing that on the sideline.

I don't personally think it was a look of awe, I think he realises the kind of person his son's become and is incredibly concerned. His family say at the dinner table that Charlie Parker was an alcoholic and a heroin addict (which came about after getting addicted to meds in recovery from a car wreck...), he also attempted suicide twice, was put in a mental hospital, and died penniless at age 34, and people are still saying "I hope he becomes the next Charlie Parker" while watching. I respect everyone's point of view, but I personally really struggle to understand how people watch it and think "hell yeah" or think his dad's look is a proud look. And obviously there's also the other similar student who killed himself. The film shows him throw away personal relationships, drag himself from a car wreck, destroy his body, mind and everything else about his life in order to be good enough to impress his abuser. To me it's very clearly a tragedy, his life is headed for ruin because of his obsession and the final scene shows him embracing it. And his dad knows it and is horrified.

@JamesVSCinema 6 месяцев назад
Yeah there’s a lot of ways you can take that ending. That was my first take, but after this watch I had a different view. I find that fascinating.
@darkaero
@darkaero 6 месяцев назад
The film definitely parallels an abusive relationships in some subtle, and some very not so subtle ways. The abuser lures him in and takes advantage of the victims desire for greatness, seducing him at the start of the film while hiding his true colors. Once he has him under his spell the true side of him is revealed, going from gaslighting him in the "not my tempo" scene (which nearly every take is indistinguishable, I'll add the exact timings at the end for movie/music nerds) telling him he's dragging when playing faster and rushing when playing slower in the takes before the chair throw, on top of having perfect timing when asked to count off 215 bpm and Fletcher still being insulted. It had to do with his timing, it was just a way to break him emotionally, humiliate him, and make him question his abilities. There are many more examples throughout such as Isolating him away from his friends and family, the victim making excuses and justifying the abuser's behavior and blaming themselves for any "mistakes", etc. The end being interpreted as a "redemption" arc where he breaks breaks free of the abuse and does his own thing, while finally gaining the respect he wanted from the abuser, also completely ignores that that was entire goal of his abuser in the first place and the whole fucked up justification he had for treating him the way he did the entire film. His entire ideology revolved around the idea of using whatever means necessary if it meant achieving his own goal and he found the perfect victim who used perfectionism as a coping mechanism for the abuse. Its not a happy ending, it's essentially a beat for beat example of a codependent, emotional and physically abusive relationship disguised as a movie about Jazz. As for the tempo scene: If you use the 5th take (the first tells him he's rushing) as a baseline the first 4 takes are practically identical and only ranging between 44-76 ms slower than the 5th take baseline between them, the 6th take is 83 ms slower (which is the first time he says he's dragging, by "just a hair"); however it's the 7th and 8th takes that give it away, the 7th take is 63ms slower and is told he's rushing, and the 8th take is only 18ms slower than the fastest take yet he's told he's dragging. The 9th take is 106ms slower and this is when the chair is hurled.

@zerbina
@zerbina 6 месяцев назад
I think it's both. It's horror and awe and they are not mutually exclusive. The family scene, besides pointing Charlie Parker's outcome, also tells you how far are they from actually understanding any artistic goals or achievements. It's the universal case of the "artsy kid" within a conventional family but with the addition that we're talking about jazz here, which raises even more the bar of complexity. The family obviously doesn't get specifics or the extents of what Neiman it's actually doing and so their attitude is almost dismissive: "oh yeah, well done", "good on you" and then moving onto another topic... which also mirrors Fletcher's take on "good job". I mean, he's literally in the best music school in the country but it seems to count for nothing at the table. They can't relate to Neiman and Neiman (only child, no friends) can't relate to them, so no surprise he gets into this abusive relationship with Fletcher, as he fills this void. Neiman's father can go so far as a loving, supportive dad but he will never be able to enter the space his kid's in because he can't even dimension or comprehend it (we only see his father present at the last presentation btw, which may be intentional). I believe the final dad's scene is he finally getting a glimpse of this realm (notice how he's specifically filmed looking throw a narrow opening). He's coming into this realization, all at once pretty much. I think the abusive relationship it's only one aspect of the movie and we can't center the analysis only referencing this. It's a bit like when a kid says he wants to be a rocker and the parents goes "all rockers are drug addicts", it's too one sided. The movie also explores what it takes to achieve greatness and the conflicting path to reach prowess: are any means valid to reach this end, is it worth the sacrifice, and for whom or what you're actually doing it?

When I think about the Father's look while Nieman is playing is a mixture of awe, disbelief, fear, and terror. Awe of the skill. Disbelief that his son is capable of that. This is my personal favorite movie of all time. Not only is the editing tight and the cinematography captivating, but the actual execution on every level from story to character to music was masterful. While I never went to music school, I DID go to Musical Theatre school, which can have a lot of the same pressures for conforming to Broadway standards as an artist. College for me was about preparing you for the realities Broadway, but at the expense of the love of the artform. To me, if I had gone down that path, I may have ended up in a situation similar to Nieman where I sacrificed myself for my art in order to "make it". That said, that's essentially only true under a Capitalist structure of the economy where there are limited social safety nets (such as in the US). I can only hope that other countries can have better means to foster artistic creativity than the US provides to their citizens. Much like Breaking Bad (which can only happen due to the cost of Walter's cancer treatment), the conditions that create Andrew Nieman are the result of systemic failures & societal expectations (heavily influenced by finances). If he DIDN'T make it big, what would his life be like? Is that option better or worse than deciding to give everything? Maybe it's better not to have two bad choices for artists (starving artist vs. unhappy life)

Thank you for pointing out the systemic,psychological and physical costs of trying to be a creative person in a merciless capitalist society like the United States.This country is quite horrible in its treatment of people who don’t become doctors,lawyers,engineers or hedge fund managers.The fact that so many people are forced into destructive,desperate,sometimes criminal,lifestyles because of this country’s refusal to provide for things like healthcare,child care,family support and other necessities is a crime and a tragedy of mammoth proportions.

I see that ending as Fletcher wanting to punish Neiman for his "ratting him out" but unintentionally bringing out his best creation yet. By cornering him and intentionally putting him in a position to fail in front of very important people, Andrew doesn't back down, but shows his best performance to this date. By screwing him over, Fletcher brings the best out of him and he accepts that by letting Neiman know he's doing a "great job" with his stares of approval and body language, he isn't ruining it, like he thought he would. These stares between the two at the end are a work of art.

I can't help but see the ending as the father realizing he doesn't really know his son and is terrified of the distance between them. That's why he's peeking through a narrow slit in the door - he doesn't recognize his son anymore. This is led to through the movie in bits and pieces, like when he said he eats around the chocolate in the popcorn and his father never knew that. I think the ending cutting right at the last note is interesting too. As an audience you usually get this big standing ovation moment to cement how awesome the performance was, but in this case I think we don't get that because it is in no way about the audience anymore. These are two musicians, fully engaged with each other and connecting through music to the exclusion of everything else. Which really underlines the whole plot of being the next Charlie Parker or Buddy Rich, the sacrifice and abandonment it requires.

Nothing is more competitive, but nothing is more cooperative either. all art constantly aspires to the condition of music. I also love the scenes of individuals just being alone woodshedding (locking yourself away to practice your instrument).

I love the film for its many attempts at challenging that perspective. It’s clearly a touch subject..but one worth venturing and attempting to craft a story in. It’s clearly relatable!

I've heard people say that JK Simmons' character is way over the top, but I don't think it's that much of an exaggeration. My wife had a band teacher in high school who was known to yell at students until they left the room crying and also threw water bottles and drum sticks at them. Maybe not chairs, but not that far off.

I honestly think he NAILED the performance. I think if he was simply an “angry teacher” then I’d understand, but in this film I feel like they’ve developed that character pretty well! He’s still a big mystery to me, which I enjoy! How did he truly get to be this way? How did he develop this ideology? We never get told this directly, and it’s left in patterns within his dialogue, which makes every sentence he speaks so damn key. 👌🏽

I was an orchestra violinist in school growing up and had directors like this in highschool and college before eventually giving it up because the stress killed my passion for performing. I Never dealt with the physical absuiveness but mentally it was just as intense so this movie was like a mini therapy session for me getting me to accept I didn't have the drive to pursue music professionally. The movie still gets a bit of bad rep in jazz circles for being like a sports movie which seems silly to those who haven't experienced it but the competetive nature of both worlds is more similar than many would want to believe.

There's a local yearly film festival here. Back in 2014 there were 3 movies there I wanted to see, ended up seeing 2: Birdman and Whiplash. I saw the 3rd one later, Nightcrawler. It was a great year for film. Ended up taking my parents to see Whiplash again later when it got to regular theaters and we all loved it. Also one of the few movies I own on dvd.

The final look fletcher gives nieman can be interpreted as fletcher finally saying good job and nieman getting the affirmation he desired. It can be ironic because nieman had to let go of desiring affirmation from others and just go all out regardless of the result in order to finally get the affirmation that was motivating him most of the film.

Agreed, the scene where he breaks up with his gf is heartbreaking. It’s concerning that several people were defending his actions if you go look up the comment section of the clip of that scene. The people who defend him at that moment probably also don’t get why you shouldn’t idolize other isolated “sigmas” in film.

A powerful film to be sure, and great analysis, James 😊 'is it truly worth it', is a fascinating theme to delve into, I think, and very recognisable: My main vocation is as a psychologist, but after quite a few years of toil, I'm finally on the precipice on my first book-release later this month😊 And when you first venture into that sort of artistic endeavor, you get all sorts of advice, most of it well meant😄 But one thing I heard time and again from professional authors, was that 'if you can stop writing, then stop'. It took me a while to realise what they meant by those words, but I think it is a similar sentiment of 'is it truly worth it'. I think it speaks to a certain risk that you take in these sort of pursuits in life. 😊

Ive actually never heard cinema described as physical and metaphysical before but I love it. I would actually group the technical in with the acting so that is all part of the physicality and the themes remain as the metaphysical. I see acting as just another tool that's all. How well does the physical (includes, camera, cuts, lighting AND acting) match the metaphyclsical? I like that so much imma use that a lot more going forward! 🙌

I watched a few videos on this ... Recognise that Andrew was wearing light colored clothes and was being lit by soft lighting at the beginning, he was portayed like an angel and eventually coming down to the end of the film he wore black the same thing that Fletcher wears throughout the film. Fletcher is a devil in the film and he converted Andrew to his side. Andrew's father tried to save him from destruction and at the end got to witness his conversion to the dark side 😂

If you’re a fan of sci-fi or J.K. Simmons, I can’t recommend the show Counterpart highly enough. It got cancelled after two seasons and now it’s hard to find on streaming, but god, it’s such a good show and Simmons was incredible in it. He played two alternate versions of the same character and you truly believe they are two separate people. Honestly, I always enjoyed his work and thought he was great, but that show was a revelation. It’s definitely worth pirating.

Notice how Fletcher demands so much of everybody and talks shit about everyone, and then when we finally see him play jazz piano in the club its the blandest mediocre elevator music ever. Reminds me of Sobel from Band of Brothers; you can teach but you definitely can't play at the level you expect your students to

@@JamesVSCinema i think it’s a great one, and i agree that it’s more of a happy one. it only gets dark if you try and come up with what happens after the movie. but as a ending for what it is, him playing in that moment and getting his shine. i think it’s a great ending showing him taking control of a moment and making it his and becoming great.

J.K. Simmons began with more training in music than acting; his father was a music teacher and he has a B.A. in music. He got his start in acting because he could sing and the local playhouse needed someone for the lead in a musical.
