Donnie Yen (actor who plays Ip Man) is being cast in the next John Wick movie. Not a total cross-over, but we do get a little love with some John Wick Ip Man badassness.

The three Chinese Master's styles 1.) Praying Mantis (That's why when he got kicked off the table, he tried to look like a dead cockroach.) 2.) Ba Gua Zhang. 3.) Hung Ga Kun. The reason Hung Ga Kun is so important is that both Hung Ga and Wing Chun come from Shaolin.
@TheRavageX
@TheRavageX 3 года назад
Actually, that dude who was doing the intro for the match between Ip Man and Twister is actually a prominent British actor who has starred in several classic HK series/movies. At one point, he was literally the token white guy in almost every aspect of HK entertainment, yet I can say for a fact his proficiency is way, way, WAAAAYYYY better than most millennial/Gen Z Canto-speakers, including mine, haha. Sad. xD (edited add-on) It was also very common for non-Cantonese-speaking actors/actresses to be dubbed over for the sake of sound QC, or the producers just wanted those specific actors for the looks, rather than the voice. There's that, and also sound was an absolute hell back then, so this constant practice eventually became a norm, and you will notice a lot of it, even in some recent productions(can't recall any right now off the top of my head). If the producers felt that the audio quality for a particular scene was not up to par, sometimes they'd just dub even for that simple reason, since it was cheaper than having the whole production team reshoot it. Like most HK blockbuster movies, they tend to focus more on making stunts as realistic as possible, as you guys are aware of this since reviewing Donnie Yen's other performances(or even other stars like Jackie Chan). Go watch Jackie Chan's Drunken Master 2(dubbed). Watching it for the dubbing itself is as entertaining. :D (last edited add-on, I swear) That British dude I mentioned earlier was not dubbed by another VA, but his own voice. Taking into account the technological circumstances/limitations into account. Rather than using the audio file that would've been recorded with the mic he was using in the scene(too much gain & mids), the producers didn't want to have that audio quality in the movie, because of an unspoken stigmatic perception: "Old mics = shite. We'd better make it as clear & clean as possible." I'd say this would be an example of how "maintaining quality control " supersedes the need for plot/setting continuity. "And this concludes my TEDxTalks" Haha, pls laugh, I'm dead-ass bored at home with the fucking lockdowns and all.......

Ip Man’s first pupil in the movie, Wong Leung is actually the one that trained Bruce Lee in Wing Chun, he spent time the most with Bruce Lee. Ip Man is the overall grandmaster of the whole school. It’s like Bruce Lee is the Anakin, Wong Leung is the Obi Wan, and Ip Man is the Yoda of the Wing Chun school.

Oh this is a great analogy, I didn't know about this. They always said Bruce was a student of Ip Man but I never know Leung was so involved in that journey too

I feel like the movies actually have a good continuity in the character development. Ip Man was born in a rich family in Foshan so in the beginning of the first movie he didn’t even think about teaching people, but then the Japanese invaded and he taught those workers in cotton processing factory just for them to self defend against the bandits. He fought for his own interest and satisfaction in the beginning, but fought because he was a Chinese towards the end of the first movie. In the second movie he was away from Foshan, away from the former rich life he was in, and he was trying to earn a living through teaching. He was doing this not only to survive, but also to take the responsibility of being the big man in his family. In the end he was fighting for Master Hong and it was also for China. Some facade of him changed, but he was still the person that would stand out when the pride of the country was being looked down upon. The character development in Ip Man is what I like the most about the franchise.

3:24 : Wing Chun is art meant for women, it was created by a Shaolin nun. Chinese during that time are male chauvinists. The translation is wrong for the old lady @16:27. She didn't say " No guts?" she said "lo meng mer?" the literal translation is "take life mer?" meaning "Watch it! do you want to kill me?". The "No guts?" translation is for the line at @16:28 "mm kao tam ar?"
@fionatsang9353

Wing chun (the style) was created by the Shaolin nun Ng Mui, who taught it to her student, Yim Wing Chun (after whom the style is named), so she could use it to defeat thugs who were trying to pressure her into an arranged marriage. Yim Wing Chun taught it to her husband, and they passed it on to subsequent students right down to Ip Man. That's the legend anyway, since women weren't allowed in Shaolin Temple no one knows how true it is :P However wing chun is designed so that a person who is not physically large or brawny can use it to defend themselves against a larger, stronger opponent by turning their opponent's own force against them. I should know, I trained in wing chun for four years and most of my sparring partners were bigger than me, I can vouch for how well it works and what a good job Ng Mui did (if she existed) :) If you can find it, I'd recommend the movie Yim Wing Chun starring Michelle Yeoh as the titular character, it gives a good overview of how wing chun was created

It's always interesting to me when people see Sammo Hung for the first time, and fall into the same train of thought because of his size. As someone who grew up watching Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, and Yuen Biao, amongst many other martial artists, I've looked up to Sammo the most as I'm a wide fellow also. He's one of my martial art inspirations as he's a staple of the "Don't judge a book" saying. If you've not experienced Sammo's movies, have a look at them even in your own time. He'll certainly impress you with how agile and skilled he is.

Been a while, but just wanted to point out that they foreshadowed how Master Hung’s health condition would be a problem in a prolonged fight because he had asthma, which is what he took the medicine for after his fight with Ip Man They wanted to show that he was on Ip’s level, but would lose in a prolonged fight because of that condition Same with Twister, he was doing well, more than holding his own, but it dragged on too long before he could finish it so he couldn’t even breathe after he grabbed Twister by the throat, so if it weren’t for that, he would have won So in terms of ability, Master Hung was the closest to being able to match Ip amongst all the Ip Man film series characters, especially considering his size, age, and asthma condition

This is where bruce lee was the like the father of mma. He learned wing chun from ip man but he notice there was some offensive flaws so he only took in the principle of defensive from ip man and bruce lee created grappling and some hand bar take down used in today mma. Bruce lee also learn kickboxing and boxing to elevate his moves. Bruce lee went to many boxing gyms and chinese martisl arts school and learn from in hence “mma”. Mixed martial arts. A lot of mma fighters said bruce lee if he was alive today would do really well in mma cause he made some mma moves well known back in his time.

You actually point out something I had observed in a good number of Chinese Martial Arts films. The voices or the audio with the white actors seem off in them. The best I could describe it is that it seems unnatural or forced. This discrepancy is not usually seen in American films involving other minorities, but I feel like the presence of white actors in East Asian projects seem less organic. The only times where I have seen smooth acting by white actors in East Asian projects was when the actors themselves were already famous and/or established people from the U.S. For example, Matt Damon in the Chinese movie "The Great Wall" did not present any acting deficits.
