 I have to admit that I'm an elderly pipe smoking gentleman that now ONLY smokes "charcoal filtered" pipes (even though I DON"T inhale). For some reason it seems that using "filters" hasn't caught on yet here in the U.S. like it has in Europe... which really is a shame since, IMHO, it makes for a COOLER, DRIER SMOKE with less chance of tongue bite. Either Vauen 9mm filters (which fit my Danish and German pipes) or Vauen 6mm filters (which fit my Savinelli pipes - replacing their more expensive, less efficient balsa ones) are definitely my "charcoal filters" of choice.

I have a beautiful Joh's rhodesian that I almost had to give away bc it's unfiltered. Your tip (maybe part 1?) to use 3mm and crystals down the stem saved the pipe. Many thanks~

Super interesting, my dear Lester! 😃👍🏻 I use these meerschaum pads many times, until they are really brown. For some bent pipes they are absolutely great! Thank's for doing this for us, I know that takes a loooot of time! 😉👍🏻

Since your previous video on this subject I ordered a box of White Elephant super flow natural meerschaum 9mm filters from Germany (no note of charcoal in these and the box is lighter in colour than yours). They’re fantastic, removes moisture but doesn’t add that odd charcoal flavour. Thanks

I have been converted to the white elephant 100 percent meerschaum filters, they draw well and there is minimal stealing of flavors. I find that they need changing every bowl but my filter pipes are pretty big bowled
@RedcoatsReturn
@RedcoatsReturn 3 года назад
I use them too, for blends which are wetter or if the flavors are complex and subtle, or where I want to use a briar and not a meerschaum. There are now white elephant superflo mix which have 70% meerschaum but also 25% active charcoal in the same filter 😊😉

Another great video! The stock of 6mm filters around the shops here in U.K. is very poor. I managed to find some of these on amazon and eBay but the prices are ridiculous! I should probably try ordering them from one of the links you’ve provided, if they do international. Thanks for the information!
@RedcoatsReturn
@RedcoatsReturn 4 года назад
13 PIPES I think pfeifen shop online in Germany do international, at least they ship to me from Germany to Switzerland. The Purize 6mm filters were from a supplier of roll your own cigarettes and vapour pipes. You may find them easier to find in the UK and the short Purize or Gizeh active charcoal 6mm filters are better than the longer White Elefant ones and easier to remove in tact...www.purize-filters.com/en/shop/

Great video. I use the Nording stones, and they work great. What do you think about putting salt crystals in the bottom of the bowl, that would be a cheap option if it worked. I may try it.
@RedcoatsReturn
@RedcoatsReturn 7 месяцев назад
Yes Jesse my’ol mate…I used Nording stones too…they work well indeed. 😊👍👍 Salt is a dessicant too…but…the trick…the crystals must absorb water when they hot. Certain minerals can do that…and absorb tar as well. The question is…if…salt tiny particles get in the smoke and taste salty. I never tried salt myself…experiment….is the proof of the pudding I guess 😄😉💨💨💨

Are you using the Stanwell 9mm filters in conjunction with those chalk pads in the bottom of the bowl? Or just one or the other? From Pipe Nook recommendations, the Stanwell 9mm has been the only method I have tried.
@RedcoatsReturn
@RedcoatsReturn Год назад
I use a 9mm filter if the pipe allows…only for non-filter pipes I use either Denicool crystals or a Sharrow pad. I tried a few times both..but..its a bit of overkill..a 9mm does the job well enough 😊 Stanwell 9mm filters are excellent absorbing tar, water and still allowing a good draw…a bit better than they others…its true and Eddie is right…but slightly more expensive sometimes…but I haven’t checked recently 😉

AromatiX x Thats for sure a 9mm, Stanwell fir straight active charcoal and White Elephant Supermix for Meerschaum + active charcoal. The latter lets more taste through. Hope 2020 started good for you.😊😊

Very good yet again, but no comparison on 8x35mm Jibill filters which I can not buy any where for my pipe from china

I haven’t found Jibill filters either but found this….ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FABurvC0ZwE.html You can find them on ebay www.ebay.com/itm/402336892554 There are some Vauen filters made in China but the review from another RU-vidr was negative about their quality ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fNMiaWjuEFk.html An 8mm diameter is hard to find but OCB charcoal filters claim to have that ethnic.ch/en/filter-tips/5345-actitube-8mm-regular-filter-100.html I have not tried them myself, they are used by vaper smokers.

What about just putting in activated charcoal chunks into the bottom of the bowl of an unfiltered pipe? Charcoal that you could buy say at a pet store rinse it off dry it and then put that in just like the crystals or the lava rocks. Would that work to reduce tongue bite and take out tar and keep a cool dry smoke?
@RedcoatsReturn
@RedcoatsReturn 7 месяцев назад
Thanks fior commenting my’ol mate 😊👍👍 No…its not good idea….half down the bowl….those charcoal chunks in your bowl will burn very hot…and burn in your briar and your tobacco will go into flames and gives you a burnt tongue too. Active charcoal is a special grade of charcoal…with a high surface to absorb water vapor, tar and some nicotine. It only works at the cartridge in the stem and shank…and the ceramic caps protects the charcoal and the paper cartridge from the glowing burning tobacco…just the smoke….goes through the filter cartridge and it condenses and absorbs the steam and nasty components of the smoke. You can use…Nording Stones, Denicool crystals, meerschaum granules in your bowl….they are all made of minerals….that don’t burn at all. I hope this info helps you…and have pleasant smokes my friend 😄😊😉💨💨💨

Great video! Is there a store online that has a really good selection of 9mm pipes? It seems like the Danish pipe shop has a good selection but is there a better one by chance? Thanks for the video!
@RedcoatsReturn
@RedcoatsReturn 4 года назад
Yes, smokingpipes.eu has a big choice of 9mm as it aimed at the European market and the prices are like their US parent but in EUR. Another to look at is mysmokingshop.co.uk which has very competitive prices, though a mix of filter and non-filter pipes. Ben Wade pipes are wirth a look at especially.

I’ve just bought some dr plumb’s 9mm charcoal filters ( one end is coloured green and the other white ) which end points to the mouth ? Hope you can help
@RedcoatsReturn
@RedcoatsReturn 4 года назад
Spangler Hmmm, never used Dr. Plumb filters. One end is plastic and goes at the cool end nearest your mouth, I’m sure its the green end. The other is ceramic, heat resistant and goes nearest the bowl and must be the white end. The system is similar with Vauen Dr. Pearl Jr filters where the cool, mouth nearest end is blue plastic and the hot end nearest the bowl is white ceramic.

Do you think charcoal filters make it taste off?
@RedcoatsReturn
@RedcoatsReturn 6 месяцев назад
Its true that…that active charcoal absorbs a bit of the tobacco flavour…maybe about 10% in my estimation. Unfiltered pipes lets all the flavour through. Its a trade-off….but the active charcoal….filters some harshness flavours from the tar as well. Otherwise, I think the flavour integrity is the same the balance of the spectrum of flavours….just the intensity….is about 10% less. For me….there more advantages using an active charcoal filter….reducing tongue-bite significantly…and reducing tar and steam too. Maybe a bit (20%) of nicotine is filtered as well….but…for me….thats good too…as I prefer low-nic smoking….but thats just me 😄😉💨💨💨

@@RedcoatsReturnThe active charcoal filters make it taste very slightly smoky to me... they work well for me because I inhale and they give an easier draw to me aswell. I would have more but the slight charcoal-y taste makes me put 9mm pipes off. Thanks for your indepth reply i like experimenting with the different filters and pipes

Are those nording keystones anything different to seramis? :)
@RedcoatsReturn
@RedcoatsReturn 4 года назад
Matthias Schmidt Thats an excellent question! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😊 I don‘t know for sure. Seramis are also porous clay pellets designed for potting garden plants. They look very similar. It may be Nording stones, being designed for another purpose and are baked from clay harder to ensure they perform absorbing water vapor in a hot pipe bowl and have the right size. Seramis are however made out of lava and vermiculite, designed for absorbing liquid water and potting plants and may have stones a bit large for a pipe bowl. I suppose the best way is to try some and certainly Seramis will be cheaper. There may be an unknown risk (eg fine silicate dust is not good for the lungs) in testing them for pipe smoking as they were not designed for this purpose 🤔😊

@@RedcoatsReturn Thanks for that scientific answer :) What works really well for me is Cat Litter that is not clumping. If you have a friend who owns a cat give it try - so far it s the best and absolutely cheapest for me :))))
@RedcoatsReturn
@RedcoatsReturn 4 года назад
Matthias Schmidt Thats another clever idea! 👏👏👏👏👏👏Makes sense, it designed to absorb moisture. Some cat litters are perfumed but the cheapest stuff probably not and so much the better 😊 On price, it cannot be beaten 😊😊
