Here's the deal: I am *NOT* the end all be all editor in FCP - now that I've looked at Justine's FCP workflow, take a look at mine and tell me how I can improve! I would love to develop better workflows, especially in macOS when it comes to using Automator to, well, automate some stuff. My feelings won't be hurt - help me get better!

Just making sure everyone knows that even though the title is dramatic, I'm not making a vid to shred or mansplain to Justine - one of the top tech RU-vidrs of all time. She's amazing...but that doesn't mean that she can't improve her FCP workflow. Just like I can...like we all can.

@@matthewTobrien I think Justine and MKBHD would be cool with it. The context really helps with the learning process. It also helps us less experienced video editors see that imperfect methods *do* work. It helps to know that some imperfect methods will suffice to complete the project and then we can use videos like these to tighten things up later. We'll be able to conceptualize it better due to the context in which it was placed. The title is a bit jarring for my taste and doesn't quite fit in with the energy I'm used to getting from you, but you and your channel are great nonetheless and I particularly like this new series. I think it would great if you did a video editing critique like Hillier Smith does with/for other RU-vid channels. Even small channels. Video editng advice and techniques that are applied to real (messy) projects are extra helpful because a lot of tutorials occur in a vacuum and seeing adjustments and corrections made within an imperfect timeline makes 'seeing' how to manuever much easier. I can see you eventually collaborating with the very creators in these videos on videos about video editing. I feel like many RU-vidrs secretly want to talk about video editing all the time, but only other video editors really care. And that's us!
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 2 года назад
Excellent insight. Very much appreciated. With my vids I"m really focused on the technical and organization and someone like Hillier Smith would look at my understanding of the craft of editing and storytelling and definitely hit me hard with areas to improve. It's a bit easier for me to gravitate toward workflow rather than storytelling craft because I've spent so many years focused on workflow because I wasn't doing a lot of narrative, reality, documentary, or tv editing. I'm hoping that I can incorporate more craft content like Hillier does and really show how the two work so closely together - better workflows allows for better execution of the craft of editing and storytelling.

One of the first things I did when I started ”seriously” using fcp was to do custom shortcuts keys for the blade, trim forward/backward commands. Now I have them on keys Q-W-E and I almost never need to raise my hand from the keyboard. Super fast!

This series of videos you’re doing about how all these people edit is very useful. Thanks for doing it. I am also hugely guilty of not using all the tools FC has - in other words, not using it to its fullest potential - which I think is the main point you’re making across all of these videos. One little thing. I always encourage people to use AppleScript or Automator or Shortcuts when using a Mac since these are very powerful tools for repetitive tasks. Instead of going to Finder and creating and naming a new folder and then copying and pasting your project folder nest template every time, you could use one of those automation tools that could ask you to input the new name and then create the whole thing without even having to open Finder. Connect it to a keyboard shortcut and then just have it run for you. The other thing I like about your videos is how calm and deliberate you are. RU-vid is full of fake energy and your sincere calmness is a breath of fresh air.
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 2 года назад
Christopher! You're too kind! And Automator is an area where I am COMPLETELY missing out on the power of macOS and automation. Another viewer emailed me with a video for how to do something similar to what you're saying. I'm telling you, if there was an Automator channel on RU-vid (I haven't looked) that just showed all the cool (and relatively simple) things you could do with that app, I would gobble it up. And if that person could sell their Automations I think they'd make some good money (haha - maybe I should do this???). I have definitely gotten variations of the "calm and deliberate" compliment often, and it has really encouraged me to keep at it. I know that hype energy works great for some channels, but it's definitely not part of mine. Although I can get pretty worked up from time to time! Is an automation like that with Automator something you can make, save, and send to someone so they can just "install" it and start doing it?
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 2 года назад
A lot of the videos I'm seeing on RU-vid about creating a folder structure in Finder automatically is going through the painstaking steps of making the Workflow or Quick Action create the root folder and then all of the subfolders. What I'd like to automate is a Quick Action that I can run after I create and name the new folder to Copy and Paste my folder template into the new folder. The big wrinkle with automating the way the videos I watch subscribe is that my Final Cut Pro Library Template gets left out since you can't automate the creation of a new Library with all of my Events, Smart Collections, etc. in there. So it would have to be an automation that copies and pastes the contents of my Finder Template into a new folder when I create it.

Hey Matthew, great series you’ve started recently! Just want to say watching your content has led me to enjoy the editing process a lot more. I’ve started making more of my own videos again over a year ago, when I decided to dive into the content creation journey as a cinematographer. I’ve been editing with FCPX a long time but obviously very moderate due to being on production more often. Your tips to an organised editing workflow really shine the light for me to struggle less with time spent doing background work 🙌🏼 The FCPX library template is absolutely brilliant! Something that didn’t cross my mind with my own folder template… The amount of time I had to spend setting up a library to have it ready for editing has always slowed me down 🤣 Didn’t realise one could just setup a library customised template too. To show support, I’m looking to purchase your template. I use a different currency but that shouldn’t be a problem. I’m very glad to have discovered your channel, subscribe is a must and cheers to the future! 😄
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 2 года назад
That's wonderful to hear, Jimmy! For me, it's all about getting the software and the organization out of your way as much as possible so you can focus on the fun part - editing. If every day you showed up on set you had a giant pile of camera and lighting equipment and you had to organize it all on the truck, on the camera cart, etc. it'd be really frustrating. What if every single day you had to build your camera rig from scratch? It can really suck the joy out of the act of creating. So that's what I'm really trying to do - get all the un-fun stuff out of the way using templates that help get you started much sooner. As well as editing methods that maybe take a bit more time up-front, but greatly reduce the friction later on in the process when you're really starting to have fun revising and polishing your video. So glad this series is resonating with you, Jimmy! I owe it all to Dylan Bates for inspiring me to take this approach to some new FCP tutorial content. Thanks so much for watching!

When I first started watching your channel one of the things that really stood out was the vibrant moody colour and lighting used on your set, very much like your friend Dylan‘s but lately I don’t know if it’s the camera or LUT that you are using but the tones seem very dark, flat and muddy. There is no separation between the objects in the background and there are times when your eyes are barely seen especially with the shadow created by the baseball hat.
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 2 года назад
I greatly appreciate that feedback. This one was definitely a bit too moody for me as well, and the hat certainly creates some unnecessary issues. Funny enough, I’ve been growing my hair out and it’s in this weird middle ground where I just can’t get it to do what I want - so I just put a hat on. My edge might wasn’t quite at the level I wanted but it can be difficult to ascertain that when you’re filming these yourself. And I’m using film emulation on top of all that, and it can really crush the blacks. Oddly enough there’s almost no flatness when I watch the image on my Studio Display but as soon as I export to H.264 for RU-vid and upload it, everything looks much much flatter. I haven’t been thrilled with the darkness in the last two vids either, but I also wasn’t nuts about the color on some of my earlier vids. Even with Cody helping me grade sometimes, it isn’t looking like how I see it in my mind. But…onward.

Hey Matt! I find the multicam method problematic when you have to edit videos with PIP footage like you have here. I instead do three compound clips of the angles and switch while editing. Also, multicam could be improved when you have multichannel audio inside the footage (for example screen captures with multiple channel audio- one for VO and one for music). If you have something to suggest for these above workflows I’d love to see it! Thanks for the awesome videos!
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 2 года назад
I still do the multicam method even with PIP. And now that I have Dylan's PIP effect it's even easier. When I'm showing my computer I have the multicam in the Primary Storyline and I switch it to my screen recording. Then I duplicate that clip and place it above the screen recording clip - I make sure it's on my wide angle and add Dylan's PIP effect and it automatically puts me in a shape mask with a color background and drop shadow in the upper-right corner. I tweak it and I'm good to go. I'll try to find some time to do a live editing stream and show that process more in-depth. A few of my past editing livestreams (there are two of them) show my old process for Picture in Picture and it was painful. Check those streams out to see if you glean any additional info. No worries if it just doesn't flow for your workflow - it's not the end-all-be-all solution. :) Just my preferred method.
@DomSigalas
@DomSigalas 2 года назад
@@matthewTobrien thanks so much! Yes that would be awesome! I also use Dylan’s effect (I did have my own but Dylan’s lovely!). The main thing I’d like to see is how you deal with multi channel audio. For example, your camera audio and the computer audio (say you had some audio being played by the computer). It’s the only obstacle I find with the multicam workflow. Basically, once the audio is inside the multicam you can’t really do anything to it. Unless you take it outside the MC. Otherwise it’s brilliant!

what is your method to make the close up clip in multicam? was it something you did first? I currently have a multicam sequence and would like to add a close up track into it. I already trimmed it down and don't want to redo it. LOVE THE ANGLE SHORTCUT. I rarely ever change my angles with cut; i always trim the fat off the video then change the angles
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 2 года назад
I just scale in on the main angle to create the close up. In the timeline I'll usually scale it up to where it feels good then overlay it on the wide, reduce the opacity, and try to get my eyes lined up so the cuts aren't too jarring. Then I copy and paste what I did to the clip in the timeline to make the close up and paste it into the clip I want to be the close angle in the multicam. I've got a vid on my channel all about the process: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HJ2XEnakF-s.html

I believe they are referring to the Shortcuts automation app that's now in macOS (originally from iOS)

Oh...duh. I haven't used the Shortcuts app for FCP, but I did have it set up for my studio. I'd use it to change my lights, switch my screen input on my preview monitor, etc. but then my old iPad mini got too old and the older version of Shortcuts isn't compatible with the newer version and everything I programmed got messed up and I haven't made the time to fix it all (or spent the money updating my iPads).

Wondering why you are doing angle changes in multicam but your not using the multicam angle view that shows all angles on another window.
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 2 года назад
Because I only have 3 angles and I can see them in my mind (weird, I know), I don't really like the multicam viewer taking up screen real estate and crowding my UI. Now if I was editing a live event that had 4+ cameras and I needed to cut back and forth between them? You bet I'd have the mulicam viewer up. Absolutely.

I do - with my Stream Deck Mobile. But I can't do tutorial vids for the beginners and intermediate users calling out custom shortcuts - they need to be the default ones so those cats can keep up. :)

I have a question: I still don't get why so many use Libraries as "Projects" and in this case events for the different media. Isn't it much more efficient (and supposed), to have ONE Library for ONE specific category of Videos? Because the events in my opinion are the bin for the different media of ONE Video, which can be divided by type of media etc by final cut itself. You don't have to do this distinction over and over by yourself. Use the smartfolders on top or create some yourself (for just viewing projects or specific keywords etc) et voila. You have a super clean all in one Library without having to manage anything by yourself. Please somebody explain.. this would drive me insane if I had to manage so much folders by myself. If you got what I meant (sorry, I'm German) do yourself a favor and do it like this. I have hundreds of Videos, but I use like 5 Libraries..
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien Год назад
For me I just prefer that every video I make is its own set of media/folders and a Library. Large libraries can get a bit unwieldy and there's increased risk of issues when updating. I want to reduce risk to my projects as much as possible and having each project in its own Library does that for me. I think multiple projects in a single master Library is certainly a viable option for some creators / filmmakers, but for me I much prefer one Library per video.
@comedianjamie
@comedianjamie Год назад
@@matthewTobrien I know what you mean. I "solve" this, by regularly backing up the system (time machine), since the libraries aren't in the cloud too. I myself for example cut many of my Stand Ups. So I use one library per year and event per show (including all the extra mic-recordings, second angles etc), naming it by date first, for chronological order. In the events everything is separated by FCP (depending on the view you choose) The real magic for instance happens, when you keyword your clips (in my case with specifically bits of my Stand Ups). Than you can create a smart folder containing just Bit-XY und you see all the different versions, without duplicating anything or so.. everything stays in place. This doesn't work across different libraries. But if I cut Recaps, or Promo-Clips separate Libraries too. In my experience this way is really liberating your mind, because you have so few bundles. By going into the bundles, you can access everything to, very organized. That's why I always copy the content into the bundle. Makes switching machines lot easier too. (sorry for the long text) :D
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien Год назад
No need to apologize. And this makes absolute sense if you're doing a stand-up act that is, for the most part, the same material each performance. Having each performance in its own library when you need to be making promotional materials, etc. with that media doesn't make too much sense. For RU-vid videos they rarely incorporate media from previous videos, so there's no real benefit to putting a "season" all in one library. At least I don't think there is. Sounds like you've got a really solid workflow though!
