The old Toronto Coach Terminal was in service for almost 90 years, and served various intercity bus routes run by Greyhound, Megabus, and Ontario Northland. With two buildings on Bay St and Elizabeth St, the terminal was the main point for bus arrivals and departures into Toronto, and provided connections to cities across Ontario, Quebec and the United States. The terminal closed on July 3, 2021 and is expected to be redeveloped in the years to come.

I remember spending many hours (usually an hour at a time) as a student and a car-less young adult in that building, both before and after the remodeling, in the 80s and early 90s. I went to University outside of T.O. and my parents and most of my family, lived to the north or northwest of Toronto. I rarely used Greyhound. They never seemed to be going where I was going. I'm glad they will preserve the main building, even if it is repurposed. It has some real character. The move is a good thing, the facility seemed strained and awkward even in the 1980s. I haven't taken a bus in a while so I haven't been able to check out the Union Station facilities.

I was at the old Toronto Bus Terminal once, on Friday, July 8th, 1971. I came in from Buffalo, to connect with Peterborough, but for some reason, our inbound bus was late. I waited at the terminal until late at night until the next scheduled Gray Coach departed. My memory was the smell of diesel fumes from idling buses and of little air circulation moving the air around on a humid evening. Still, the older terminal brought excitement with its curved facade to this young traveler.

The coach terminal had a poor location and a poorly designed terminal area. The new Union bus terminal is an overall improvement. The only nice part of the old terminal was the art deco entrance hall, which will almost certainly be preserved during redevelopment.

Personally I would rather ride a train but it is a shame this is closing. Also all of Union Station should have been only art deco.

You must remember when the old Terminal was built, Toronto was just a lot smaller of a city than what it is now. It served its passengers well.

The location was prime and perfect for a coach terminal 91 years ago. Go read some history and research sites and their purposes before spouting off such nonsense.

Fantastic job as always. Picked up many friends over the years from this place. Hoping for a properly done redevelopment as it’s in municipal hands. 🤞 Excited for its future...

Lost a girlfriend that was coming in on a bus. she decided to go home with this scummy guy she met on the bus. He ended up doing nasty things to her with a friend at his apartment. She ended up in the hospital for a few days and he sold a video of it all. I told her not to go but she wanted the "big city excitement". She got it!

Hey- Ive been here! Megabus used to have a "hub" in Pittsburgh and had daily overnight service to Toronto. Took it there for like, $5 and then another megabus to Montreal...where i proceeded to fall in love with the city and visit every year for four years. :-) It was a funky, weird layout, but still kinda cool.

It's better that intercity bus service now stops at Union Station because the new terminal is very nice and modern and it's near the Gardiner.

Shame to see it go, but it was becoming inadequate and needed some cash injected into it, badly. I'll always remember waiting for the Greyhound to Chicago so I could see my fiance, now husband.

Before the upper level was a restaurant it was a waiting area in the 1980s. I met a runaway there and spent a couple of weeks with her as my live-in companion till she took off again. The tunnel leading to the mall always smelled like raw sewage. When they initially created it broke an underground sewage line and flooded the entire construction area. Even after they finished the tunnel it smells like old rubber and sewage. I once saw a guy doing an unwilling young girl late at night in the tunnel. It was scummy. All the homeless people used to go to the mall and then to the bus terminal when they got thrown out then back to the mall.

@@louisaugustexvi4515 That's Toronto. For all the good there is an underbelly of filth you just need to put your hand under the surface. While it was an unpleasant event, I decided caution was the better part of valor. and hoped she would not get herself into a situation like that next time. Not everyone can be rescued and not everyone can be a hero all the time.

@@marks5141 The downtown core was not a pretty or safe place back in the mid-eighties at night. With no cell phones and the closest police station being several blocks away on Dundas (And they used to shut the payphones off at 9pm in the downtown core due to being used by drug traffickers. They left one or two with just 911 if you knew where they were!) So it becomes an assessment issue. Can I get help, will that help I am seeking to be able to mount assistance (Typical security guards won't even unlock a door downtown at night back then), and can I get them here before the event is over. The answer to most of those in that event was a no. In the Mid-eighties Toronto used to roll up the sidewalks at about dusk and there was no one downtown and nothing going on that was legal. Warehouse raves, a couple of drug dens and a bunch of after hour booze cans. That was life in Downtown Toronto in 1985.

With all due respect, this was a miserable place for most of the past four decades I used it. Dark, cramped, terrible amenities, user unfriendly and overall just not somewhere you wanted to be for very long. Mind you, many older core city bus terminals are pretty much abysmal (looking at you, Port Authority). For the sake of passengers, struggling intercity bus lines and the building itself, I'm glad it was closed and will be repurposed for Torontonians while still maintaining its historical facade and lobby.
