I think one of the reasons Death was so Rube Goldberg-esque (in the first film at least) was mainly to stimulate the conversations Scully and Mulder WOULD have had if this had been an X Files episode. I can completely picture the local cops calling them in for the teacher's death, saying she was stabbed to death, but they can't find any fingerprints or whatever. And then Scully puts together the silly, but scientific explanation by seeing the cracked mug, computer, etc. And then Mulder wraps up the scene by saying how unlikely it all is and bringing up the plane crash. "Mulder, I'll admit it's unlikely, but freak accidents do occur." "This doesn't feel off to you, Scully? Like some force was gunning for this woman?" "Sometimes you just have to accept the physical explanation, no matter how strange." "Scully, what if I were to tell you this woman was supposed to die 9 days ago?" **X Files theme begins**

Originally Alex was going to die after saving Clear, she would have then gone on to have Alex's child and "New Life cancels Death Rule" she and Carter (Who somehow manages survives for nine months) are taken off Death's to do list. Test audience whined and they changed it to Alex get his head taken off by a helicopter blade...and then they whined again so we get this instead. Is it worth 2,000,000$? Also, if they stuck with the original it probably have been the first time teens having sex literally saved them from death and the day the kid is born would've also been the day of the Route 23 pile up (The disaster in the next movie.)

I could believe it, but lemme ask ya this: If he was, why would he give people advice on death and the way it works? Why would he tell them that death has a planned design and that it's beatable? Why would he assist them in their mission to beat death if he himself was Death? I could believe that he does it because he likes to watch them struggle, knowing that it doesn't matter if they beat the design because they'll eventually die anyway. And Bludworth (the mortician) has shown to be at least a little sadistic. The way he pulls off the guy's nipple ring in Final Destination is a prime example. But I ain't sure if he's as sadistic as death has shown to be. Either way, it's a fun theory to think about.

@Starlight Runner Actually it's revealed by the production crew iirc that no, death here is basically just a dick who's essentially "playing with his food" like a cat would a mouse... it's even revealed that death itself was the one sending the visions to fuck with them and make them think they had a chance, Death in the FD series is a manipulative sadistic prick.

I always figured Bloodworth was some kind of supernatural being. He knows FAR too much about Death's rules and such. I know that he might just be a plot convenience, but I'm talking in-universe. Also, Death is a prick in Final Destination. Likes screwing with people, especially the one who caused the avoidance in the plan.
@AncapOtaku
@AncapOtaku 3 года назад
He's very knowledgeable yes but that doesn't automatically mean that he is death himself because why would death give his victims any information on his plans or even how to thwart them death has made a physical appearance in the novels and William bloodworth has appeared in another novel called death of the senses and he has nothing to do with death or his design it's far more likely that he is a survivor of death and the reason why he knows so much is because he's seen it all before like he said and final destination five He's seen this happen before and we know he can't be referencing the first or second film because it was a prequel before flight 180, So it's far more likely that William bloodworth is a survivor of his own flight 180 phenomenon and has the same psychic powers as Alex Wendy Kimberly and the others He's also probably been studying because the flight 180 phenomenon goes as far back as Victorian England that was the first well-known documented incident of the flight 180 phenomenon as cited in the novel final destination destination zero or final destination zero as I like to call it.

I still think the first _Final Destination_ is the best out of the series, the deaths felt more simplistic and not like a Rude Goldberg cartoon the sequels went for. And the opening plane crash felt more realistic as it is something that could really happen. But in all honesty, I would really love to read the original _X-Files_ script of which this film was based on.
@rhondahoward8025
@rhondahoward8025 4 года назад
Even the plane crash thing capitalizes more on the catastrophic _consequences_ of such an event instead of the actual probability of it. I mean believe it or not, but statistically speaking, you're far safer in a plane than you are in a car. Somebody dies in a car crash every single day while you'll probably only see a dramatic plane crash once every few years or something.

I completely agree with your conclusion. The sequels turned the series into a live-action version of Happy Tree Friends with killings so OTT it's become impossible to take them seriously. We're no longer supposed to care for the characters, but sit and hope gleefully for their demise. Sadly, the original is the only FD instalment I enjoyed. The plot felt somewhat unpredictable back in 2000, and the movie was at least subtle about things.

While I think the premise for Final Destination could make for a good horror movie, I think it would work even better for a dark fantasy, especially if the reason for the visions are explained. Stay with me here, the events in the vision do actually happen, and one of the people dying is confronted by Death. They make a deal with Death to play a game; Death will turn back time, with only the person the deal is made with remembering the events, the person and their friends will be spared, but Death will come after them again. If they can manage to cheat Death a second time, they get to live. And so the protagonist spends the movie trying to save themself and their friends, with Death giving them little clues to keep the game interesting. The protagonist, along with some of their friends, manage to escape Death, but Death is a sore loser and comes after them again when they least expect it. This of course wouldn't work as a horror movie, because the personification of Death and lack of mystery surrounding the events would drain a lot of the horror, but I do think it could make for an interesting movie

@robertyeah2259
@robertyeah2259 5 лет назад
I also think that these movies really missed an opportunity to make them more philosophical as well. The concept of death is so universal and so deep, this series really could be a deconstruction of death and why people fear it. The fact that it's not so much dying itself, but losing everything we have in life that gives up purpose. And if going with the dark fantasy route, include the bit from the second film about how these characters being alive when they're not supposed to is changing the destinies of every single thing they interact with, the main characters resisting the inevitability of death causing destruction and suffering around, possibly to an apocalyptic scale. Who knows? The reason this series makes me so angry is all the squandered potential. I know I should judge the films far what they are instead of what they could be, but since what they are is shit and what they could be is infinitely better, it still bothers me.

10:59 I gotta ask, "Why Charon of all characters?" He was just the ferryman. He ferried the boat. If they were going to reference anybody from ancient myth why not Thanatos? Thanatos was the actual "God of Death" in Greek myth (who's surprisingly forgotten about most of the time). I mean there were three key figures in the mythos regarding the Greek afterlife. There was Hades, the "Lord of the Dead" who ruled over the Underworld. There was Thanatos, the actual "God of Death", and there was Charon who ferried the fuckin' boat! How the hell did Charon get to be more well-known than the actual Greek Grim Reaper?! :/
@CoolG97
@CoolG97 7 лет назад
I think it's because if he was "Death" the question would be "Why is he waiting?" with Charon his job is to get you to the Underworld, he's meant to just sit back, watch Thanatos do his thing so he can collect the passenger, and move on. He still knows things about Death and can offer "help" (Although, one must wonder if he's really trying to help or just messing with them for funsie), but can't really do anything else. That fits William Bludworth pretty well. Basically, Charon is more passive and has nothing to gain or lose from a few people being alive when they are not suppose to be.

I think this series and the Paranormal Activity movies are great metaphors for modern horror. They start off really, REALLY good with sequels that are even better (in my opinion). Then they start to get silly with the 3rd installment until, finally, they just start to suck. They even start to lose all sense of continuity by the end, too. Anyway, my favorite thing to do with these movies is imagine a Grim Reaper type character actually, physically interacting with all this stuff, singing a merry tune as he kills these stupid kids. (Granted, this is even funnier to do with the sequels. For example, imagine a gleeful Reaper driving the Fork Lift in 3.) I'm happy that you're tackling these films! It's one of my favorite modern horror film series.

This was the only good film in the series. Alex's behavior is realistic to me, mainly because he is a 17-year-old just thrust into this mess out of the blue. As for the "leaving evidence" thing, he was trying to help his teacher out while he could and besides, the explosion wiped away said evidence.

If I can add my own thoughts, part of the reason they think that Todd is Charon, is because he knows all about deaths design and more or less always appears whenever people who cheat death die. Essentially it seems like part of his job is to be there to pick up the stragglers that cheated death, which given the fact he appears so often is certainly a possibility. As for him not being mystical, that's easy to explain. That being if he is essentially a deity of sorts then he'd know how to perfectly blend into the normal world to keep people ignorant, keeping things subtle. Then again that's just what I think.
@deusdeaconReviews
@deusdeaconReviews 8 лет назад
Yeah I've heard that too but he only appears three times in the entire series tending to only three people so not very attentive if he is charon, and yeah he knows about the design thing but so did many other people also the advice he gives in the second film is completely and utterly wrong anyway.

well to be honest you say it adds a little to the series but my point is that surely then the fans are doing the writers job for them? by expanding on the mythos in ways the writers never intended, it excuses the bad writing cause it fits the theory, and giving bad writers more credit then they deserve, That why i don't like fan additions and theories such as this.and when it comes to american pie, I find them to be infantile drivel, written by people who fart and think its the funniest thing they'll do all day, which going by the movies they wrote it would that wouldn't surprise me to be the case.

I'll admit I like the premise of the first movie mainly because I love the poetic concept behind someone attempting to escape death. Unlike most other monster/slasher-type movies where there's a physical or supernatural killer which one can potentially evade or defeat, in this context the usual fight for survival is pointless from the start, because no matter how hard you try no one can ever escape death. Sooner or later everyone dies. It was a beautiful concept for a horror movie which spoke very intimately to my inner nihilistic cynic. All the other movies (while undeniably dumb in comparison) I also must confess to liking as they appealed to my inner misanthropic sadist. Don't judge me too harshly, I have a lot of unresolved anger issues. The senseless gore helped to satiate me.

There is a potential explanation if you look deep enough into the lore People have speculated that it might have been to throw off bloodworth Because he's seemingly very knowledgeable on his design and as he said death doesn't like to be cheated and death is seemingly enraged that bloodworth knows so much about him and his design and likely wanted to confuse bloodworth by making it look like a suicide because bloodworth has been giving advice to the main characters on how to defeat him now this is a potential stretch but it's also a possible explanation.

I think with the discussion between the 2 teachers of who goes back on when there was already 3 teachers (according to the news report) on board wasn't a mistake nor does it make her more responsible for the other teachers death, I just re watched the scene and at no point did they say that there was no other teachers, she just said to the security guard that "but one of us needs to be on that plane" Which makes sense with the class size. It might not have been crystal clear but what they were trying to get a cross is with out another teacher there wouldn't be enough chaperones for the trip which might have meant all the students would have to leave the plane possibly ending the trip altogether.

Something occured to me about these movies. A big deal is made in the first few movies about the order of Death's Design. And if someone saves you, you get off the list. But technically speaking, ALL the main characters where skipped because whoever had the visions saved them. The movie's own rules make the movies impossible! And that's just on the premise alone, not the fact that the laws of physics have to go out to lunch in the sequels.

Cool review but I feel like the logic of this movie was thrown out for suspense, uneasiness, and gore so you can leave feeling anxious and scared, because let's be honest how the kills are made are to be meticulous and drawn to give a mock sense of safety when something bad doesn't happen instantaneous almost giving the viewer hope that the character might live even if they know better. Personally I can recongized the flaws of the movies but it still think its a damn good horror movie since every time I watch it, it makes me fear that whatever I do might lead to an slow and painful death.

Just cos it's horror doesn't mean it gets a pass on logic. You've got to set up rules and stick to em or it's just lazy bollocks and not worth your time. It's that kind of attitude that gets so many crap horror films seeing financial success.

I've heard that the reason the plane just explodes mid flight instead of nose diving is because the plane has a delayed take off from dealing with Alex and the other survivors getting off the plane. Like Death had set the Rube Goldberg sequence of events that would have ended with the plane crashing before it even left the airport which is why they events from premonition to actual event are timed differently. Of course, this doesn't work for the other films as the accidents happen sooner than normal or finish quicker (look at FD5 where the premonition takes a long time but the actual accident happens in a fraction of the time.)

My best to worst: 1 (really like the main score, perfect score for 'Death itself') 3 (some of the best kills in the series) 5 (great twist at the end. The CGI in the gymnast girls death hasn't aged well though) 2 (still good, but the pacing hasn't aged well) 4 (gets really boring after a while)

You can see the expression on Alex's face after Terri gets hit by that bus ..like he's thinking as well in his head like, "Where the hell did that come from?!" Lol I don't think that was a movie mistake ..just wanted to make the audience wonder how in the Hell ?! Lol or as many people have said " Death finds a way" also did you notice that the blue and red stripes on the Bus AND the Train are the same colors of Flight 180? I did Lol very interesting noticing the little Easter eggs like that in these particular films, like the 180 sign in Paris at the end spelled backwards that Alex almost got killed by ..anyway great review ! .No matter the mistakes or criticism of this film...I still love it ...my favorite in the series ! :)

I personally think you really dawged the shit outta this film. However, I can totally get behind what your saying now that we are in 2019. While movie still becomes pretty pointless plotwise once you understand death is indeed inevitable... I like Final Destination series. All of it. I like it like both a slasher and a horror. First part is obvious. Just like in Saw you just want to see how crafty screenwriters can be about murdering someone. Guilty pleasure of mine, I guess. And the latter is... Final Destination for me is THE best paranoia generator ever, like in all of media. All murders constructed that way so it can occur to anyone of us, considering we are having a really bad day. After 10th watch of any installment I still have that period when I just start to gazing around frantically, watching out for anything at least a little bit suspicious, especially sharp objects, pointy corners or electrical parts. It's pretty messed up, but frankly... That's why I really like Final Destination. Its' "domestic" murders makes for pretty good movie watch and just plain astonishing aftermath

I must say, the others are a little wonky, but I can't help but love the first Final Destination for how friggin' cool the premise is. The complete and utter mystery behind the visions, and the realization that the horrible tragedy isn't over is fascinating to me. Too bad it was squandered. It kind of makes me wish the series would get remade with a more competent film crew.

Imho, the whole movie franchise as a whole is flawed. Death is mad at the kids who have the visions and save people. Why isn’t death mad at whoever gave the kids the visions? Are these kids all psychic? It’s all so weird.

You know, to be fair, death had a lot of people to count in that plane accident. He probably thought he was miscounting before realizing that they were missing and had to find them. Why does it not take so long in the sequels? Death got faster at counting and he was able to tell they were missing faster.

i want to start by saying I have not watched all your videos in this series, but I am subscibing and watching these and more... love your take, usually. first of all I agree this one was hokey and I truly don't understand how it got a sequel. But I am glad it did. the second one was great and as a fan of behind the scenes I like that it restarted the physical make up effects trend that has a following now. I also like the rube goldberg device aspect of the movies. that being said, I think the second is the only truly watchable movie and I look forward to seeing your opinion as I watch the rest

Believe it or not some of the deaths in the series are actually possible and they can happen in real life. Yes some deaths are not logically possible in the series, such as the glass completely crushing Tim like an accordion in Final destination 2. Remember how Nora was killed in the elevator in the second movie?? Well a similar accident happened in Houston, Texas where a Houston doctor was decapitated by a malfunctioning elevator. I live about 45 minutes away from Houston. I think the accident happened in 2003.

OffTheShelf Reviews actually did a review of this entire series and they actually gave a good explanation (still headcannon but oh well) of why the plane exploded prematurely If the plane was meant to explode it would have exploded due to deaths plan or whatever now alex delayed the plane taking off but the timer to doom was still ticking so once it was in the air and it was time to pay the piper the plane goes BOOM but wasnt far away enough to start nosediving etc etc

I’m pretty sure Hitchcock’s death would never have been noticed by train staff or passengers. Maybe one or two would have witnessed it but with human psychology they’d have explained it away in their head or have been traumatized enough to lock it away pretty quickly.

Having only just watched your video, I'm surprised by how dismissive you seemed of the inclusion of John Denver as a recurring motif, since his connection to the central theme of Final Destination is rather more fundamental than just dying in a plane crash. John Denver was on the shortlist to be one of the crew of Challenger in 1986, but lost his place to a schoolteacher. Subtle enough, wouldn't you say?

I hate how much Claire was designed to be a side character meant to support story points. She had enough backstory and personality to carry her own side storyline and she was just set up to enhance Alex’s story.
