FINAL FANTASY 16: Let's Chat Lore, Story, Characters & Potential Theory Juices! 

Even as I post this I'm reading more of your comments, ideas and finding new details about FF16 that is making me itch I only knew after this idle chat. I was a few days late to the party so this whole discussion was off the top of my head and based on immediate impressions. After seeing how much that impression aligns with the MEGA team working on 16, it makes it so clear why the tonality of 16 is coming across the way it is. Its basically the Ivalice lineage returning back to mainline and after just playing FF tactics a year or two back. I LOVE the savage and unashamedly brutal commentary the game made. Really makes me think I gotta play vagrant story🧐. Are you guys fans of heavy political, imperial and class warfare topics being in FF?

If you look closely the ifrit at the end of the trailer had blue eyes rather than orange/red eyes just before that we see Clive. I actually saw on Twitter that for Japanese promotion for the game Clive is hunting down a ‘shadow’ ifrit and the end of the trailer it seems as though ifrit is hitting another ifrit I presume blue eyed ifrit at the end of the trailer seems like Clive and the other is shadow ifrit.

I personally think there's a possibility of having allies join Clive, like Benedikta or Hugo, and after they do they'll pass on their power to Clive so he is able to defeat and control Ifrit. Long shot but it's a concept that's tried and true. So glad to back on this road of theorising main titles with you after 6 years. Crazy how time flies.

I wonder if that older looking blonde head guy is a older Joshua, and was taken and raised by the empire that attacked Clive's home. I have a theory that there is the Mother Crystal (light) and an unknown anti mother crystal (dark). Which is why we see two different Ifrit's. Ifrit with Blue eyes (light side Ifrit) yellow/red eyes Ifrit ( dark side Ifrit).

my wild story speculations for XVI is... 1. look like Clive and Johsua have diferent mothers, they are step brothers. Maybe Clive mother died after giving birth of him and duke maried another women who is Joshua Mom or there will be another story behind it, but I am very confident The Arcduke is Womanizer. 2. Will be another classic Aikons like Holy element Alexander, Water element Leviathan, and secret aikons 3. Jill is Shiva Dominant 4. A man in bed with Benedikta is the Archduke himself. 5. Dont worry, there will be party members with pawn system like on Dragon Dogma

Considering the fact that one of the shots of the gameplay has Clive’s name inserted above his healthbar, I am clinging to the copium that they are hiding the other party members, potentially the other Dominants since Clive mentions wanting to unite them.

It’s early, but Happy Birthday man! 30 looks good on you! This new FF is pretty transformative and quite a unique take on the combat and gameplay flow, but there’s no doubt we’re in good hands in all corners. Especially the narrative. I can’t wait to see what they’ve been cooking up for us.

Аs for the dominants - here are my predictions. We have 6 realms and 8 Eikons (9 with Ifrit, nobody expected and known for as suggested in the info on the site). We know two of the realms do not have a domaninat champion. I think each royal familiy in the realms have their Eikon that got inherited, the Eikon they treat like god, so far we know Rosaria's god is Phoenix, but there are more Eikons that are not the god/ruler of the land, but they are still in prominent roles that are randomly awaken. And Clive being Ifrit might either be something that nobody knew or the Rosaria keep his existence a secret among him and his immediate family. But he is not the Phoenix so he cannot inherit the throne, but Joshua can. If the royal family are the only one knowing that Clive is a new Eikon they keep a secret, maybe Joshua knows about it and once Dark Ifrit shows up and start killing people Joshua might think this is Clive and turns against him. Maybe even Jill knows and if Joshua survives they might both be initially feeling betrayed by him and consider him an enemy after the tragic night. After that Jill and Joshua are taken to the Empire and we might even got to see older Joshua sitting next to the Emperor

I’m really excited about XVI because it’s made by the team that constantly make good on the story and lore part. Anyway, my take about the story so far, and my current theory is this: 1. Jill Warrick being Shiva’s dominant is practically confirmed, and it make sense. If we consider that she was only in Rosaria, basically, as a prisoner of war, it make sense that she’d go back to her country again after the fall of Rosaria (the Duke is killed, Joshua might be killed as well, Clive Rosfield is basically goes Ramza). Also it is very possible that Jill Warrick is already known as the intended dominant of Shiva, and it is being the very reason why she becomes the political prisoner. The fact that she survived and managed to come back to her originally fallen Northern country and become its WMD *cough* Shiva Dominant, indicates that the Northern country might be partly or even wholly responsible for Dark Ifrit’s appearance. 2. Clive Rosfield is Ifrit’s dominant from the beginning. From seeing the last scene of the newest trailer, i came to the theory that the very reason why Clive Rosfield was unable to inherit Phoenix, is because he already becomes Ifrit’s dominant. It could be something that happened right when he’s born, or before Joshua born. It might also be that he accidentally came into contact with Ifrit’s crystal or something when he’s a child. My guess is that Ifrit might just be an Eikon known only by select few, maybe it used to be Ifrit for Rosfield in ancient time before something goes wrong and they changed to Phoenix or something…and that’s why Clive being Ifrit dominant is kept a secret even to himself (he might be growing up not knowing about it himself). Also i think it’s known by limited few within Rosfield, including the duke and the Basch looking guy. It’s likely why then the unknown enemy choose to use Dark Ifrit to kill Phoenix. The Basch looking guy being a traitor who knows the secret, he make it possible to planned the destruction of Rosaria using Dark Ifrit, so as to pinned the blame to Clive Rosfield who is the kept secret Ifrit dominant. They bank on the likelihood that Clive will awaken as Ifrit once they managed to kill the duke and Phoenix/Joshua. There is also a good possibility that the Basch looking guy might be someone working for the Northern country where Jill Warrick came from. So, he did everything for his country, similarly to how they do it in XII, where the King Raminas of Dalmasca was killed by Gabranth/Noah who pose as Basch, to shift the blame to Basch. I’m guessing that they choose to use Ifrit, because he’s almost always the first Esper/Eikon/Aeon player character have in Final Fantasy games series, aside from Shiva. Also they seems to associate Ifrit with the idea of being the Eikon patron of the vengeful or fire of rebellion, as it is on XV with Ardyn as well. 3. The ending might be bittersweet. It’s just a wild theory of mine, but the ending might just be Clive as Ifrit’s dominant sacrificing himself to re-lit the fire of Phoenix and bring back his brother, Joshua…or something similar. It is of course will open up a path for a sequel… *cough* MONEY!! *cough* That’s what i can come up with after considering all that we know of so far. The potential for the story and lore really excite me, especially since it got high likelihood to be another Ivalice union…they always come with pretty decent story for Ivalice union. In fact, the team that make XVI seems to only make Ivalice Union so far, they seems to focus more on world lore and story building. Cmiiw 👍👍👍

Peasant u mentioned the phrase cause and effect and in the Japanese trailer Clive is told, “Awaken Child of Cause and Effect” instead of Child of fate. Interesting because they have a word for fate and yet it was not used.

The slow change of Garuda from a bird to a birdlike humanoid to a woman who can turn into a birdlike humanoid is one of the best things that has ever happened to the franchise. As I said when the trailer dropped... the Shiva era is over now is the time for Garuda.

The new trailer combined with all this speculation is getting me so excited! One of the biggest things I'm looking for in this one is character --- so far the cast of characters looks promising, but I'm hoping we get some real solid depth and growth for the characters and their relationships in FFXVI. Like you, I absolutely loved my experience with FFXV, but I think there were so many cool characters and bits of story that just never had the chance to live up to their potential. I want to see family bonds, betrayal, romance, and epic character arcs on my screen!

I feel like who becomes a dominate is kind of like a chosen one scenario. The dominate manifests in someone who's qualities best suit that eikons abilities. Could be bloodline (Joshua more suited to phoenix then Clive), physical strength suiting Titan (Hugo Kupcake as a nobody soldier), Benedikta's unknown (possibly depressing background and thiefy skills suiting Garuda). After the Traumatic events of the first trailer, abilities maybe manifest in Clive? Who know's how it originally manifests and probably just an ass pull, we don't have much to go off. I feel like we won't get party members, but some of these characters join us on Clives journey and he borrows powers from them by creating bonds. Temporarily or permanently i'm not sure. I think clive was smashing Benedikta in the 2nd trailer, if that's the case they obviously have a bond. Maybe Hugo becomes a bro after they fight. With the theory of "2" of the same Eikon (dark and light) and Clive potentially being ifrit, maybe his deep hatred for the "ifrit" that kills Joshua caused another version of that Eikon to manifest inside him. IDk

I feel as though the surprise of the one guard that there was a second Eikon of Fire still is true, because maybe Ifrit was thought to be gone or hadn’t been seen in a long time, or maybe Ifrit was like an ancient Eikon that no longer exsisted after a certain time, and the Fire Eikon became Phoenix. Plus the person who turned into Ifrit in the first trailer was either 1: Clive awakening it over his emotion to save his brother, we hear him yell out to Joshua to stop and he sounds obviously distressed, and by the nature of phoenixes maybe they already knew what could happen to him if he awakened the power too early and untrained. We also see ifrit like freaking out when Clive is yelling so it kinda paints it like he is ifrit in that scene, but maybe they both lose control and that’s what leaves to maybe the summons fighting to the death, causing Phoenix to kill itself in trailer 2 when you see it implode and the healthbar drops. Maybe it dies, or it could do the Phoenix thing and rebirth into maybe Clive or someone else. 2: it could also be an antagonist, maybe showing up when Phoenix had awakened to steal its power or destroy it, and then when we see 2 ifrits then it could be Clive then as the second one, maybe finding the true power of Ifrit to fight the antagonist. This would lead more into Ifrit not really being present for a while, maybe he was a dark Eikon to begin with, and people used his power for bad and he got sealed away, but after a while the antagonist found it and awakened it himself. Or Clive awakened it by accident, causing it to be released, again all speculation but I think that could be cool!

Maybe the icons people get are situational and maybe the reason the young boy got phoenix was because his will was to bring his dad bk to life and the main character was full of rage and wanted to destroy his enemies but I also have a feeling that the icon ifrit might be 1 of fable like only appears in times of turmoil to restore order between the icons hence y he wants to collect all icons powers

We still know very little about the blight, but it looks like it is almost eating the land as the map shows a lot of barren lands in darker shades

I'm not going to guess at much, but I'd bet young Clive segment is the prologue. You meet his brother and everyone. The prologue ends with the kingdom getting conquered, Joshua dying and passing Phoenix to Clive. Then the rest of the game happens after a several year time jump. And I wonder if this Benidikta lady is a romantic interest. Was that shot with her naked in bed was with Clive or another character?

The basic elements of This Final Fantasy XVI Story Seems at least a little bit Inspired by the Great Titan War Lore of Attack On Titan, the very way the Eikons Holders are viewed and used is basically identical to how it was with the Shifters in the Eldian Empire... And the visuals of Summons are more terrifying than in any other game (except Shiva, she is still in a more beautiful than scary style like the others) just like the original 9 Titans xD

Maybe the blight has a special effect on Dominants or enough blight could give rise to a new Eikons so Fire: Phoenix & Ifrit Earth: Titan & Golem Ice: Shiva & ??? Wind: Garuda & Valefor Lightning: Ramuh & Ixion Water: Siren & Leviathan Dark: Odin & Diabolos Light: Alexander & Carbuncle Non Elemental: Bahamut & Tiamat (Don't know of a reoccurring Ice summon other than Shiva) But my own personal thought, and that like Ifrit to Phoenix, Dark/Blighted Eikons would be more bestial or savage than their counterpart while also providing more bosses to deal with or problems to solve to gain the power of another Dominant.

Loved this theory video! Also one thing I want that isn't a theory so much as would be cool since we do have an aging up of Clive, perhaps we could throughout the game on his quest see him age instead? Like no huge timeskips like make it every few months in story as we see how Clive goes further and further on his quest of revenge. Also there is one out there thing a friend of mine brought up... You know the two naked people? What if that isn't Benedicta and someone else but perhaps there are Witcher style romance options that Clive can get that lead to steamy scenes?

The dominants and how every nation seem to have one and use them as a weapon reminds me a lot of how the tailed beasts work in Naruto. And in some ways the titans in Attack on Titan. If they throw in some Berserk too I'll be happy.

Don't think ifrit will be the only dark eikon, maybe every eikon has another dark version of it caused by the blight that was mentioned in 1st trailer and all the dominants have to unite at part in game (party) with petty politics tripping them up along the way

in the Dominance trailer, I think Clive said that he will unite the Dominants and create a new Order

Dang man, I would love to pass the peace pipe with him and get his thoughts about some of life's philosophical questions. I an certain that it would be both entertaining and enlightening!

I have a theory that the reason why Clive was outcasted was that he was framed for killing his brother Joshua. If there was a Dark Ifrit, I'd assume that this assassin kills Joshua and then vanishes after Clive awakens as the true Ifrit. Since there might be no witnesses that watch the two Ifrits battle, his nation leaders assume the worst in Clive.

Interesting you bring up the dragon dying and falling into another universe and splitting into crystals, because that’s what happened in drakengard/nier universe

As silly as this might be I'm very interested in how they are going to handle more violent stuff in cutscenes as well as "spicy" scenes. This will be the best M rated mainline FF and this was definitely something that they felt they had to do while in development otherwise they would just keep it T as always. Either way this was definitely something they considered and was discussed internally and I cant wait to find out how they use it

In the trailer we saw two different massive Titans, one was dark and purplish with more aggressive design, I think that one can be the Dark Titan. I'm so happy they're putting the focus on the summons to bring back that grandeur to summons instead of them just being a tacked on part of the game with no relevance.

The game makes it seem as if awakening as a Dominant is random, but I have a theory that the elites of each country somehow has a way of choosing their Dominants. Think about it: in Rosaria, the Dominant becomes the Archduke. It couldn't be random. Why would you have that rule if you couldn't guarantee that you can keep it in the family? Hugo being a nameless soldier awakening as a Dominant would make it seem like it's a random thing. But I bet the Dhalmekians secretly choose him because they can mold him into whatever political symbol they want him to be. A soldier becoming a Dominant would be this world's version of Captain America basically. So I think each country has their own national myth about how Dominants work but the truth is much more calculated.

yeah i definitely feel like all the dominants are gonna share the same fate and come together for the greater good. Just like how in ff 13 the whole gang were brand as l'cie and their fates were intertwined because of it. Like who in their right mind would be a pawn to that jerk of an emperor. I'm sure there will be a few powerful dominants who would gladly die for their country but they kind of represent a power that man isn't supposed to be in control of anyway like nature and stuff. mayby dark ifrit isnt the final part but the beginning of the end. yoshi loves older FFs so I could see him put out a sudden twist at the end like in 4 ect. Also I am sure they havent shown us everything yet.

Is there a chance Joshua knew what was going to happen (precognition or other wise) and quote on quote "let his death happen" because he understood that because Clive had a piece of Phoenix's power he could use it to resurrect him?

Maybe the iron kingdom created ifrit with its sole purpose to destroy the dominants. maybe pheonix skipped a generation because clive inherited ifrit after it was created, following previous pheonix's death joshua awakened quickly to combat ifrit. Clive wouldnt have released ifrit as a dominant before being a calm headed swordsman. I think the imperial attack triggers joshua to manifest pheonix accidently and that in turn triggers ifrit from clive. then clive accidently kills pheonix then he inherits pheonix himself.
