I think what doesn't work about the design is that he LOOKS more mature, but he still ACTS like a traditional FF protagonist, which is to say a melodramatic teen.

"Ol' Grandpa Cloud Strife" actually caused me to burst out laughing. That delivery was just utterly perfect. I love these videos. Edit: The "reading off the hand" bit also got me. While I was taking a drink of water. I have legitimately done a bit of a spit take to this video now. That bit about playing the first Final Fantasy got me. I remember playing that one way back in the day. I'm not even sure how my parents ending up getting that one for us, but I'm glad they did. But yeah, I'm definitely closer to Jack's age than Cloud's these days. Also: All those extra lines about Jack in the credits are incredibly accurate.

i've never played a final fantasy but i could listen to jenna describe this man in increasingly accurate ways while that gif of him getting hit in the head with a frisbee plays on loop for mmmmmmm like 4 hours

Honestly, I'm just annoyed at the discrepancy between Jack's basic streetwear, the supporting characters having the more complex recent FF clothing style, but then Garland just having the same Yoshitaka Amano armor. It's just too many different styles and it makes the overall aesthetic lack any feeling of unity and cohesion.

Maybe I'm biased towards ponchos but I feel like this design could be greatly improved upon with a nice, weathered poncho. maybe with some geometric patterning, or even fringe or tassels if you're feeling fancy.

Just because I'm getting older it doesn't mean I want to look boring either. If anyone thinks they are too "mature" for colors they have a problem. Maybe that is also a statement about the character but it sure isn't someone I want to play as.

Okay, here's the thing. If I were the character designer for this game and my train of thought was, "okay, this is a prequel to the first Final Fantasy and this character is an adult man in his thirties," you know what I'd probably dress him in? A SUIT OF ARMOR. Not a Henley and dad jeans. This argument still doesn't defend the fact that Normura's design for this character is completely nonsensical in the context of a setting which always has been, and seemingly otherwise still is, CLASSICAL HIGH FANTASY. NOT EVEN A LITTLE BIT CONTEMPORARY.

Admittedly, I thought he was wearing a romper at first, not an asymmetrical tshirt. The readability of what they showed us in the trailer at E3 was kind of abysmal. Everything was so colorless and dark it was hard to see really what he was wearing at all.

I get the take here, it's well made and insightful. It doesn't really change that he has the strongest 'generic macho dude' vibe I've seen in years. He's just boring. He might be new for final fantasy, but outside ff he just looks like every single generic video game protagonist man with anger problems and a 'troubled past'. He seems like an asshole, and not the fun kind.

I'm totally onboard with having an older protagonist in FF, but c'mon, there has to a middle ground between full Final Fantasy camp and just some dude I might see in LA? The design doesn't read FF at all, even when compared to what we've seen with other characters in this game

Honestly, the part that threw me is that Cloud's the oldest protagonist, but damn, it's not wrong. Cecil, Bartz, Lightning, and Noctis are a year behind him, Terra's 18, and everyone else is 17 or 16.

I wish Amano would come back as character designer. There's something so magical about his designs that FF has totally lost over the years. Just look at the amazing artwork for Firion and Maria in FFII or that gorgeous piece from FFIV with Cecil, Kain and Rosa posing together. And then of course there's Terra Branford from VI. How can you look at her original artwork and not fall in love? I'm tempted to go buy one of Amano's art books now in fact.
