This song is really interesting... the context for this song is a boss battle (of course) against an almighty god... it pits "holiness" of the choir against the "chaos" of the instrumentation.... alluding to the fact that the God is not as benevolent as it seems. This song was made in part to rival another final boss theme from the series, maybe I'll request it for next month! (Also love 13's percussion, it's sooooo good.)

Not just any boss battle, but the boss battle of the entire FF13 (trilogy) series. Basically biblical God in that world.
@dice5709
@dice5709 2 года назад
I think every god type Final Boss has something biblical about it and it's always some form of corrupt god or human become god. I think one of the reasons developers like to use biblical depictions is because it's easier to recognize.
@Someguyhere111
@Someguyhere111 Год назад
@@dice5709 I mean the Biblical god is basically a villain. Everything about it screams 'tyrant that demands your fealty', so it's not hard to see how non-Christian cultures would draw inspiration from it when designing a god-like villain.

This could very well be the most underrated final boss theme in all of gaming because of how controversial the Final Fantasy 13 series is, and how this is in the final game of the 3, meaning if you didn't like the first game you never heard this composition. However if you committed to playing all three of the games and got invested in them, the payoff is this epic final fight with the literal God of the universe that has been screwing with the main character's life in such a soul consuming capacity. Everything is falling into chaos by the time you face Bhunivelze and this is the final stage of the boss where he is literally sprouting from the tapestry of the universe that is curling in towards you as he's destroyed most of it in hopes of remaking it from scratch. What I wouldn't give to see this piece performed live with a massive orchestra and chorus.

It was composed by Mitsuto Suzuki, who is one of my favorite composers, and definitely an underrated one. He’s not been a main composer of a mainline FF game, but he was for Mobius Final Fantasy, which was a mobile game (incredible soundtrack that’s not talked about enough). He’s also worked on the FF13 trilogy and FF7 Remake.

From Final Fantasy 1-9, the main composer was Nobuo Uematsu. In FF10 Uematsu composed songs alongside Masashi Hamauzu and Junya Nakano. FF10-2 was composed by Noriko Matsueda and Takahito Eguchi. In 11, it was Uematsu, Naoshi Mizuta, and Kumi Tanioka. The main composer for FF12 was Hitoshi Sakimoto with Uematsu and a few other composers only contributing 6 tracks total. Masashi Hamauzu was the main composer for the FF13 games. Nobuo Uematsu composed the soundtrack for Final Fantasy 14 1.0 but after the game was rebooted in FF14 A Realm Reborn, Masayoshi Soken took over as main composer for 14. The main composer for FF15 was Yoko Shimomura. Hope this helps, it's a lot to keep track of though.
@DakonBlackblade2

And they are all amazing but honestly what Shimomura did in 15 is for me one of the best videogame OST's ever. Soken is awesome in 14, Uematsu has always been great, the others are all very good in their own right too but Shimomura outdid herself in 15, that soundtrack is truly amazing.

I felt like I needed a Xanax afterwards.

Yep, it's meant to be chaotic. When you hear this song in game you are at the very end of time itself, after the world that all three XIII games take place in has collapsed and gone supernova due to plot reasons, and you are about to face Bhunivelze aka God himself who turns out to be a complete asshole. This song is a mismatch of bits and pieces from many other songs throughout the XIII trilogy, think of it like a journey back across all three games but pumped up to the max because well it's a boss battle after all.

The composer for this is Mitsuto Suzuki. While Masashi Hamauzu was the main composer for the FF13 trilogy, by the time of the third game (which is Lightning Returns), Naoshi Mizuta and Suzuki became more like the main composers instead. You can tell by looking at the final boss themes where Hamauzu wasn't involved in at all. Mizuta composed the first final boss theme ("Divine Love") while Suzuki composed this, the second final boss theme ("Almighty Bhunivelze"). I can't pinpoint Suzuki's musical style yet but I would say that Mizuta and Suzuki's music in the FF13 trilogy sound a little like Hamauzu's style. It's like their composition style sort of rubbed with each other. The official length for this is about 13 minutes (a nod to the "13" in FF13), and while it might sound like it's looped once, it's not. The overall structure of the first half and the second half is the same but there are differences in those two parts. But yeah, as you pointed out, this is full of dissonance and leitmotifs. Honestly, it's one of the favourite tracks in the trilogy if not my favourite. I'll also add that Hamauzu himself also likes to employ dissonance in his music. For example, "Saber's Edge" which you have also reacted to, has some dissonance there too. That's composed by Hamauzu.

Coming back to realize- the number 13 plays a big role in the worlds structure through history, even the daytime is 26 hours on a 13 dial clock. In the second game, the realm that governs time often shows the 13th hour being struck before the end of the world. In the last 13th minute of the song you can kind of "hear the music fall apart" which perfectly alludes to the boss fight being the end of all time
