FF13 has its loads of problems but music ain't one of them. This is a brilliant boss theme. One of the best in the franchise, even, due to its dynamism and epic progression. Love it!
I'm in the "FF13 is massively underrated" camp. They aren't my absolutely favorite in the franchise but they are up the list for sure. FF13-2 is one of the only games I've gotten a platinum trophy in. Every time I hear the music I instantly want to replay.
Same here. Once you accept that its not supposed to be an open world FF with bunches of side quests and just settle in for a very directed story I really enjoyed it. The music, the places, and the characters were great.
Excellent choice. One of my all-time favorite Boss Themes-still listen to it over a decade later-and overall, one the best FINAL FANTASY Scores ever released. The XIII games had their share of unpopular design choices but very few would argue against the quality of the scores. Determination, Dust to Dust, Blinded By Light, Lightning's Theme, Fang's Theme, Defiers of Fate, Can't Catch a Break, Atonement, Will to Fight, Snow's Theme, Fabula Nova Crystallis(I'm sure I'm forgetting a few) and of course Saber's Edge are all stellar tracks that anyone interested in this eclectic soundtrack definitely should check out.
Killer track... In fact I think the whole OST for FF13 is quite amazing. I remember first listening back in 2010 during its release and being blown away. Geebz tbh they dont always send you the best stuff to listen to 😅, but I am glad to see every now and then you get sent a musical piece as interesting as this one here. This one was composed by Masashi Hamauzu; he composed the entirety of FFX and of FFXIII. He is classically trained as you could probably tell and he has a good number of excellent compositions outside of FF. He is quite fantastic in most stuff I heard from him and I am glad you got to listen to a bit from him! I hope you get to listen to more of his work in the future.
Final Fantasy X had three primary composers, actually. ▪︎ Masashi Hamazu ▪︎ Junya Nakano ▪︎ Nobuo Uematsu I'm not trying to come across as snobbish, I promise. 😅 This boss theme achieves something hardly seen or heard in the series. The improvisational quality, dynamic composition, and bombastic sound inspires a feeling of triumph and a hard-earned, barely achieved sense of victory. The iterative drum pattern(s) mixed in with that erratic sounding glissando piano is spectacular. Masashi Hamazu is wonderful. Saber's Edge is my ABSOLUTE favorite boss battle them in the entire series. ❤❤
@@ElliesCousin Masashi Hamauzo really knocked it out of the park with this one for sure. I've listen to his solo album he did post FF13 and unrelated to the series and its fantastic as well.
Having beaten the Chrysler Building and unlocking the entire game, I am ready for a remake of PE, even #2. I am going to play through PE2 again, it was such a good experience the first time. Started to feel fun like RE2 but an actual challenge! LOL I want the Gunblade Unlock, it was the first game where you can use a Gunblade outside of FF to my knowledge. And I mean shoot and chop at same time, it was the strat I have heared with that. I need it!
FFXIII is a brilliant game with a masterful soundtrack. Not all the songs are big like this one. It's quite diverse and I recommend checking out more songs from it. It'll be well worth your time.
One of my favorite video game albums….so underrated. I will say since you don’t play lots of games, when the music puts you in shoes of the player…..as you play the game, there are different feelings associated while the player is in battle. The speed and tempo somehow makes sense….
I’d love to see your reaction to Murray Gold’s music for Doctor Who. In my opinion the best composer. He seems to be able to tackle any genre and style. There’s a lot, so a few tracks I think would be great to get a taste for what he can do are; - Rose’s Theme - Madame De Pompadour - New Adventures - The Daleks - The Impossible Planet - Doomsday And that’s just from his first 2 years of doing the show. There’re so many. Might also be worth comparing his version(s) of the show’s theme music (probably his 2005 or 2008 versions) to the original 1963 version which was composed by Ron Grainer and arranged by Delia Derbyshire in a way that truly revolutionised the ways music could be made.
What an amazing view on the theme! I was hoping you'd mention the 5/4 and 3/4 time signatures being used! I think Final Fantasy XIII is the second game after Final Fantasy VIII to use the 5/4 meter in a battle theme. Awesome job! :)
The piano part is dissonant and meant to inspire feelings of tension during battles. Heard several instances of where this is a thing.. like with Chrono Cross.. final fantasy.. ect.
