Monster Magnet, a lot of times, has a bunch of phrases that sound really cool strung together and sung out loud, but are pretty much gibberish otherwise. Part of why I dig 'em.

They're from Jersey. Dave (the singer/leader) is a huge comics fan, and a lot of the mental imagery is based around various characters and themes, and they veer off into social commentary and psychedelia, and calling back to a heavy vibe of the 60s.

Fun Fact:They NEVER recorded it with mother "f****r". It was always mother mother. There is a version someone made themselves but inserting their vocals into..its tragic.

@@kharma7755 I was thinking the same thing. Doesn't sound right. I had the uncensored CD back in the day & it didn't have the "fucker" in there. Edit: Apparently this is as it was originally meant to be but wasn't released until recently. I don't know. Still sounds weird.

This is the more authentic version than the original radio release. This has "fucker" added back in after the fact, and right where it belongs. Whoever steered them to this version, thank you

You MUST check out their first mega hit, Teenage Negasonic Warhead...gives a great vibe of what the band was originally about! Seen these boys 3 times, first time they were up and coming, and slayed it...second time the lead singer was deep in his drinking addiction, around the time this album was released, and he could barely stand let alone sing...last time was only a few years back, he was sober and cleaned himself up, and they sounded brilliant.

Dave Wyndorf (vocals & guitar) has kept Monster Magnet active since the late 80's... They had a big moment of popularity in the mid-to-late 90's... but have been largely catering to their hardcore following since. I definitely like the censored version better, and that's the first time I have EVER thought that about a song lol. I had no idea until looking it up that the uncensored version never was released until (I think 2003?), and still wasn't really heard as often as the edited version.

This song is about being a rock star. It’s exaggerated and uses space metaphors but if you listen carefully he’s singing about fans worshipping him. “I’ve been stuffed in your pocket “ can be an allusion to the concert ticket or even their cd. “I drink from your tit” is about how he gets sustenance from their applause and adoration. “Milking my nightmares and using my name” is about the record company using him. These are only my thoughts on it but it fits perfectly. The same with the song Powertrip- if you think about the lyrics through the lens of a guy that’s glorifying being a rock star with a healthy amount of hyperbole mixed in, it makes a lot more sense.

I am familiar with Monster Magnet. I heard "Power Trip" in the Kurt Russell movie, "Soldier". It is a great song. There are nearly three times as many in words in that 3 1/2 minute song than Kurt Russell's entire dialog in that 99 minute movie (104 words) and he's on screen 85% of the time. This was the first time I listened to "Space Lord". Very good. This is a great band that didn't achieve the cultural penetration they deserved. Most people have probably never heard of them.

The video for this was kind of a big deal. There was a minute there in the late '90s where rap hip hop dance music kind of pushed everything else out. There were great bands and you've listened to a lot of them, but almost everything in the top 40 and TRL for a year or two was either Puffy and Ma$e or Neptune's produced stuff like Missy. It was a big rock is dead minute. And it was dead because you can't dance to it. This song was a massive hit and the video was even bigger because it was a parody of Puffy and Ma$e and Missy and their background dancers were going ham. And they were so hot. You watch it you will see Rihanna's doppelganger introducing the metal world to twerking.

I saw them open for Rob Zombie at the Aragon Ballroom. They blew Rob outta the water. Dave pulled two girls out of the crowd before this song and while he sang it they made out behind him and took each other’s shirts off. I’m not kidding you when I say this was THE most rock and roll shit I have ever seen. They’re still one of my favorite bands to this day.

Silver Future, Gods and Punks, and of course Powertrip are among my favorites from Monster Magnet. Saw them in the early 2000’s at one of the yearly rock festivals, they put on a great show. It opened me up to listening to more of their music. Mastermind and 100 Million Miles are also great lesser known tracks.

This album, Superjudge and Power Trip are all fantastic Stoner Rock albums! MM are def one of the best of them, plus one of the earliest, along with Kyuss, Saint Vitus, QOTSA, Unida and others. Stoner Rock is a pretty hyperfocused sub-genre but its so good! Kinda Master Of Reality-era Sabbath mixed with hints of punk, thrash, doom and southern rock. Very interesting sub-genre! I started with Superjudge, which is such goodness! The Hawkwind cover “Brainstorm”, the Cactus cover “Evil”, Black Balloon, Stadium, Cyclops Revolution … hard to find fault with any of it!

@@randomstuff5701 Interestingly, in my book that is to be published this year, I mention that "God Says No" is one of my "theme songs" for certain contexts. My two usual "theme songs" are Judas Priest's "Riding on the Wind" and Joe Satriani's "Back to Shala Bal" -- both of which are fast-paced and hard-driving rockers, which suits my personality, mindset and lifestyle. However, "God Says No" is perfect for various other situations.

I cannot disclose the title because you never know what might happen, and I do not want to make it public yet because I believe it will resonate with readers and thus I do not want someone faster and more ambitious to steal it from me...
