I've had my fair share of submariner homages, but this Baltany Retro Diver is not like the others. While a majority of AliExpress watches focus on homaging the modern sub case, the Baltany D034 looks into the back catalogue and goes with the more refined vintage-styled case from sub references of the past.
I don't know if this is the best submariner homage under $200, but it's definitely the best vintage-inspired one in that price bracket (for me). I hope you enjoy this Baltany watch review.

I have never been interested in a Submariner Homage, but not only do I like this, but I am putting this on my short list of watches to get. I also like that it’s not an exact 1:1 Homage, and that it’s vintage. Thanks for the great review. “With great magnification…”😂

I've avoided the sub homages because they don't do it for me- never understood the big appeal- but this one also goes on my maybe list. It's very appealing

I have the 36mm bubbleback homeage that uses the NH38 and similar dial/hands. It's very nice, though a bit dressy with the polishing. I like the oversized hands and I think it works even better on the dive watch.

I love the look of their bubbleback homage. The hands definitely work better on a dive watch, but I like more slender hands on vintage-inspired watches. Well, at least they’re extremely legible, I’ll give them that!

Great review! Looks amazing on that nato strap. I wish they would have gone for a fully brushed design. Also the hands could be improved. But for the price it's hard to complain.

nato's and leather straps don't belong in salt water IMHO, but rubber straps are acceptable

@@Dirtywesterner My skin doesn't react well to rubber straps. I'm using sailcloth straps in water nowadays, much prefer them over rubber or nato.

Will wait for reviews to see if the bracelet really is worth the extra £50. Can't see how it would be. The Ipose bracelet is the best I've had from AE and that is only £40 or so. Where is the extra money going?

Love it! I never was a fan of the Rolex Maxi case. The classic case design is SO much better, but there are few homages with that case type.

So, it looks like you’ve done it again! Great video! I had already seen the photos for this watch from Baltany but I think I needed a good video (with amazing quality) that could show off its features. The pictures showed the watch with “creamier” colors, especially the hands and indices. But now I can see that it’s not bad at all. WatchDives came up with something similar. The retro 1969. I hope someone makes a video about this one but so far, the dial color (blue) seem too subdued, grayish even. You’re right about that NATO strap, it goes perfectly with this watch. Just one thing: you said the case is 38, right? Both Ali and Baltany say it’s a 39mm. From your video it does look like a 38 so…🤔? Anyway, I just want to say that I’ve bought 2 watches recently, the Thorn and the Sugess GMT Pro (I decided to give it a try) and both purchases I did after I watched your videos about these watches! You do have an influence in me 😅😂. Will the next one be this Baltany? Maybe…

Sorry, one more thing: I think that the snowflake hands will look better, indeed. That’s one point for the WatchDives I mentioned, I’m not crazy for the ones on this Baltany.

Thanks a lot brother! I guess I can officially call myself an ‘influencer’ now. 🤣 I was confused by their 39mm specs too. I measured it multiple times. The case is 38mm, but the overhanging bezel is 40mm. Guess they split the difference and just listed it as a 39mm. I’ve been eyeing that new Watchdives model too. It looks truer to the vintage Tudor sub, with the snowflake hands and the dial/minute markers. I’m a huge fan of that look.

Haha the snowflake handset is ordered and on its way to me. It’s going to be my first mod, so I hope I don’t butcher the watch! Both colours look great, but I think the blue is the one to go with here. It’s a very similar shade to the blue BB58, I’ve not seen other Ali watches with this shade.

I like the minute hand, that's a great departure from the norm. But, I like my Watchdives WD1969 even more. The case is thinner (despite housing the NH35 with date complication); the lume is better; the bezel is higher quality and more durable (with some iterations of the ceramic bezel emulating an aluminium insert with faded silver numerals and indices) and it has a bracelet. Lastly, the WD1969 is 50-$100 cheaper, depending on sale price of the Baltany.

👏👏👏 Great job Baltany for using nh38 as you should. I just don't understand why some other brands use movements with a ghost date. I know its not terrible but i cant get any SM bc it seems they all lacking. I prefer other brands that cost far less and i know their disadvantages. Sorry abt the rant, thank you for the review. This one looks great!

I remember Marc from Long Island Watch saying that it’s harder to source the nh38 movements compared to the other Seiko automatic movements. I’m guessing because most watches have at least a date complication, therefore, those movements are in greater numbers.

man this gives my steinhart ocean 39 a run for it's money in the appearance category, overall the steinhart has a better movement but does it really make much of a difference?, although I do prefer the snowflake hands ..

Appearance aside, my Steinhart Ocean 39 is much better built than the Baltany. I'm sure the bracelet is miles better too. Both are great watches though, I think there's room for both in a collection. Black modern Steinhart, blue retro Baltany. ;)

You could have filmed a crappy Hello Kitty watch and I probably would want to buy it. 😂 Incidentally, I like the oversized hands. Use dental floss (waxed) on the thread tube of the crown. This will smooth and put some lubrication on it. It will help with crown actions screwing.

While I agree with your points that Baltany's is more consistent than other homage brands in its design choices to recreate a vintage diver, I wish they hadn't polished the middle links on their bracelet model. It should have been brushed. Had the bezel been ceramic, then I wouldn't had minded the bling as it would have been at least consistent in its aesthetic.

Obviously you have not handled an actual Sub this is an homage to. The bezel over hang is spot on. This is exactly the way a 5513 or a 5512 is. Except this doesn’t have drilled lugs which for me is a let down.

Isn't this a homage of a pre-"snowflake" Tudor Submariner? Rolex Submariners have never had blue dials, and Tudor Submariners HAVE had both blue & black.

DON'T buy a baltany watch. My baltany watch completely failed after wearing it 4 times. I contacted baltany requesting their address so I could ship it to them to be repaired / replaced, it has a 2 year warranty. They refused to provide their shipping address and said to have it serviced locally, despite the movement completely failing. Unbelievable, they are NOT a legitimate company. I just ate $150, it went right down the drain !
