Shownotes:
This brush handles decently well and has a nice weight to it. It isn't too drippy, and the cap can screw to the back if desired. The hang loop is also nice for drying. Although the palette is TINY, it's a good match for the book, and would be great as a purse or pocket palette, particularly if you want to fly with it, as it's plastic and won't trigger TSA. Although the paper seems to be cellulose, it seems like a good fit for the size of the book and the subject matter. It dries quickly, but seems like it's easy to layer and blend on (at least, so far).
The paper is stiff and fairly thick, which is good as it will resist buckling, but it needs assistance in lying flat.
The brush is a little big for some of the smaller details, but it's meant to be kind of a general-purpose brush with these illustrations and sets, so it makes sense. It's a decent little brush and would work well as a travel brush.
I wish the mini books were also available in a larger size, or the books were available separately, as I'd like to try the cat one as well. That said, the same company DOES offer line drawings printed on cotton watercolor paper, if you're looking for something relaxing to color along with: tinyurl.com/yc6w8uxd
I really like this little set, although the brush is just a lil too big for all the fine lines. The lines disappear as you paint over them, the colors handle well- it's just a really well-composed little kit. I actually like this presentation a lot better than the Chinese-style Phoenix watercolors I reviewed, but I will say I wish I knew what these flowers were.
I think this little kit would make a WONDERFUL gift for anyone who enjoys watercolor and has keen eyesight. It's a very well-composed little kit that performs better than the price, and it's charmingly presented, so you wouldn't even need to wrap it if you don't wish to.
Pros:
Very affordable for this kind of kit, even including shipping
Super cute and compact
The linearts are really pretty and seem to disappear into the painting as you paint
The paints work well with the paper and for this sort of project
The brush is well-made and decent quality
The paints and brush will more than last for the entire book, and could be used for other projects or would work well for travel
Very cutely packaged, it would make a great gift for a watercolor fan
Cons:
Brush is kinda big for such small and delicate linework
So far, you can only purchase it from/on AliExpress (let me know if yall know otherwise)
Only 3 sets are available so far, but you CAN order more little linearts from the same company Missing a mixing surface, otherwise it would be everything you need.
The Verdict:
I'm surprised and so glad that I like this little set! I wasn't that impressed with Phoenix's Chinese watercolors the first time I reviewed them, so I was a bit skeptical that I would really enjoy this set, but I decided to take a chance and order it because it was SO CUTE and yall like when I review aesthetic art supplies. If you want a small win of your own, the printable linearts make it easy to paint satisfying little art pieces, and the cellulose paper dries quickly, so you can paint these little cuties quickly- perfect little wins for busy folks.
