Very cool and perfect for the California climate. That slatted overhang wouldn't work in snow country, but I think these units are attractive for the right location.
Reality Escape Pod to me is a 12 x15 windowless, soundproof space, no tv or internet, just a comfortable recliner, bookshelf and cd/phono player. Perhaps a mural of choice and several items of personal meaning.
Many are integrated with nature, planters integrated into the walls, greenhouses on the south facing side- tiny homes/cottage core.Rich people build them/visit ones with exceptional views- but they have to have people bring them food, and stuff. They have “assistants” keep up with their communications, in case they need to move some investments around, or something.
I’m actually pretty interested in this manufacturer. I live up on the north coast of California. The zero rust and mold aluminum set-up sounds great to me! Thanks for the video!
I'm in a similar position looking for something in Arcata. In a perfect world, I would be tempted to jump on the Boxabl prototype showcased last year. It's a 3 "box" unit with two ground floor boxes and an upstairs box with an adjacent 400 sq ft deck. Do you mind sharing what other options you're looking into and what location?
I have to admit that my reason for enjoying watching these videos is because of my interest in solving a global housing crisis. So when you skipped to the largest version of this manufacturers options, I found it was the only one I was interested in seeing. It’s OK. My other thought is while there are many viewers in California for housing , the price point of anything created in California will likely be on affordable to folks anywhere else in the United States. I wonder if this means that there have to be regional centers where these are built. I suppose this is no different than what do as well. Great content as always. Cheers!

I was on the reality tv show survivor. It’s better to stay in regular reality. Trust me🏝️ I too like the K9, or as I call it, the Fido….because it’s a K9🐶 A pantry in a home that size is a nice plus. I have not yet decided what state I will actually develop....I will be developing at least 10 acres, however I am looking for 50-100 acres.
A week to assemble. 2 heads 40 hrs each, $100/hr, loaded = $8k plus $4 K expenses. Round it up to $15 k install cost. Probably minimum. Remind me how many might want to DIY. Nice units, great vid!
Reality Escape Pod....no phones or ways for family, bosses to be in touch. A Jello filled hot tub with a drink tray, some good books and bags of Maltesers. Kerry videos on an endless loop, especially ones that mention ginch:). A massage therapist on call. It's heaven!
I like this one Kerry! But/And I'm curious about insulation & climate control. I live in the Sierra Madre' mountains in California, and it does get cold and hot here. (like from 12 degrees F in the winter - 100+ in the summer. Is the whole structure made from aluminum or just the framework? Sounds pretty lightweight. I wish we could put wheels on the baby & roll it away from fires & floods! Thanks for keeping us here in Ca in mind 😺💜
Considering the house I own is 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, single car garage and 12x10 shed for $247k, I just can’t fathom a standalone 1 bedroom apartment for $140k…. For me the K-9 unit is worth $75k maximum. I believe if you could find a parcel of land and use the floor plan to build it yourself using wood and concrete you could do it for under $75k. Personally, I’d go 100% reinforced steel concrete. The rebar and forms are cheap/rentable and the concrete pours are cheap. End result is much more substantial that aluminum. And you could run radiant heat/cooling pipes and manifolds through the concrete.
I don't have any experience stocking a reality escape pod, but, given most ways that most people escape reality, I am thinking the unit would be stocked with lots of alcohol, illegal drugs, and some sort of atmospheric lighting. Not saying I've done this, but just looking at possible solutions.
Kerry, it looks nice. But I don't like the bathroom being right next to (or in this case, in the middle of) the kitchen area. There's something about the bathroom located like that near the kitchen that bothers me. All the unpleasant bathroom smells wafting into the kitchen area, shall I say?

I am in Southern California but I'm hoping to escape one day. That's why I'm interested in which cities these houses are made since I'm not sure where to go yet because I don't want to freeze to death one day in my old age. 😉
dale Gotta say, I love living in Colorado. But, the closer I get to 70, the winters hurt more than they are pretty. The rural areas have become really crowded and people seem to become angrier with each passing year. Guess that's anywhere nowadays. When you come, bring your own water because it's harder to find. We are in a continuous drought that's causing the wells to dry up. Make that billion dollars and mfg dehydrated water for all of us!

You don’t see homes like this very often in Virginia. It’s nice to see them and know there are other choices over traditional housing. One thing I noticed with all the glass it would be good to know a creative landscaper especially if you live in the city. I like these homes thanks Kerry
I’m going to go with my thesis that you won’t find much about “reality escape pods” cuz NOBODY wants to find out what people actually do when “escaping reality”. As a somewhat idolized gentleman once said “what, you never seen a full grown man covered on Vaseline wearing only cowboy boots?” Comes to mind. I’d like to categorize it more like a getaway cabin. For hunting/vacationing away from home. Hopefully in some remote area, where if shtf, it won’t be a focused area for control.
I like the mid century modern vibe this Prefab gives off. I am in agreement with the other commenters though about the steep prices on these things. They just don’t understand why they need to cost so much! It does very little to help with the housing crisis which disproportionately affects people who may not have access the money for these homes even though they are beautiful.
Agree on the price. As expensive as it is to build in California, this space is so small you could hire a contractor to build it of that price. I've had friends who had contractors build them garages with an extra bed room, small rec room, bath and kitchen attached for that price that have more square footage.
Nice. The K9.12 hits the notes for us... but where to put it if you don't have a yard (the condo HOA isn't going to sign off even if we could find enough space on the property). Looking for a lot in a place often associated with nimbyism seems problematic. If we could rent one of these or buy an installed one, that would be an avenue we'd explore, but good luck on zillow or redfin (better sources?). Not sure if others are in a similar spot, but we'd be curious to see where these are getting installed, and a retrospective from folks who've successfully run the gauntlet. Kerry: It would be interesting and helpful for you to create a spreadsheet listing all the companies and all their models, and then have columns for type, models, sizes, features, purchase cost, shipping costs, build/set up costs, total cost, contact info. etc. and then post it to your channel to download and version it so you can update it. The quoted price of these units is nothing short of absurd. Anyone with carpentry skills and standard power tools could enlarge the FP to 14 or 16ft x 44 - 56ft ft in residesntial code framing, wood and/or metal stud framing and duplicate the general layout, look and feel of these for half the price or less most anywhere in the US and have truly livable space without sacrificing practical furnishings and conveniences. Or… there are many manufacturers already producing them.
Looks good , but from Wyoming I want a fireplace / gas fired wood stove and roof needs to be at least a R-40 insulation value , able to support 125#/sq ft for snow load - How many offer this type of customization?
200% profit minimum here, easily. If not more. I am completely disappointed how all of these prefab companies charge a fortune when it should actually be way cheaper then conventional construction methods. As someone experienced with building and development with methods based on assembly lines, I've been trying to get into it. Here in Canada where heavy insulation and increased structural support for snow loads, I could build alot cheaper then them still. Also, helical piles are absolute must for installation. It's 1/3 cost and done in a day compared to masonry footings and foundation which takes a few weeks with escavation.
Finally somebody heard of summer shading and winter solar gain combined-in the soo clever USA too : D (Well, at least kinda, the angle of the solar radiation is ignored.)
As an ex-South African I think SA has a potential to make high quality prefab homes and export it across the world. I'm starting to look at nice prefab homes to retire to on about 10 years.
My Reality Escape room is a good book. Kerry, my best guess is that 2 doors = 2 means of egress. In the United States, the International Building Code (IBC) specifies the requirements for means of egress in buildings. Here are the key points: Minimum of Two Means of Egress: Almost all spaces and buildings must have at least two means of egress.
Reality escape pods are undoubtedly needed in California. Our new residents that escaped that reality and came to Florida are so, so happy to be outdoors and happy again! Floridians have no need for that. We “escape” to our decks, yards, campgrounds, lakes and of course all those glorious beaches! We do need more housing for all those Californians and New Yorkers, and Michiganders, etc. They need to house families and parents who love the freedom. We need small and tiny homes in little villages! Someone - please pay attention to real needs! Putting a bathroom directly across from a kitchen is well, according to medical professionals, FILTHY. A toilet flushes, and guess where poo germs fly to. No way, no how, no thank you. I want mine at opposite ends of the house!
And here in Georgia we get all the Floridians that can't stand it there anymore. I lived in FL, Broward County for 10 years and I'm glad I left before it got so overcrowded there. The mountains in the area above Atlanta, with the waterfalls and orange red fall foliage and the views are worth it. Besides it is not going to be underwater soon. It is a much longer drive to reach the ocean but GA has some pretty islands too. I do miss the FL keys a little bit.
K9.12 looks decent. I would likely not use the living room too often 😂 but that's just me. I would insist on buying it though for future proofing my investment. Thanks again Kerry!! Your hard work really helps me feel better about not doing that research myself.
The tiny homes are very cute but i'm also surprised at how nice their industrial design and architecture for office spaces are its giving me some really cool ideas to develop land for office, medical, or industrial all they need is a roof ac and they would be solid.
