about bloody time, as for the speed limit of 15mph, sounds sensible to me, even though my scooter is capable of 40mph I find myself naturally happy at 15mph or slower. The max power should not matter if you obey the speed limit, I live at the top of a large steep hill and the extra power is needed, also rider weight plays a big part in performance a 350watt motor will always struggle to pull a big man up a hill. limit the speed by all means 15mph is plenty fast enough but don't limit the power. let us use or common sense, if I can control the power and speed of my car, It's safe to assume I can do the same on my scooter.

I think it will still be a while until this is passed into law unfortunately. Things from last years Queens speech are still being debated and have not been aproved. Maybe they will have some sort of amnesty until it is made law but I doubt it. Hopefully either way the police will chill out knowing that the change is coming.

It seems yet again another click bait you tube video. As it stands ecooters are still illegal to ride on uk roads because of one very inportant point that you and others seem to have missed out on. You need insurance to ride them on the roads and as yet there is no company in the uk selling private insurance on these things, yes you can get insurance in the trail areas but that is done as part of the hiring charge. So untill you can get insurance you will be unable to ride them in the uk on the roads its a little thing but a quite simple idea. On a plus side you will also have to be over 18, hold a provisional or full driving and have a reg plate. I find it very odd that you fail to mention any of the above.

Definitely a step in the right direction. I never loose my faith in that they will screw up the legislation when they bring it in - but whatever.

Bought one last week I had a gut feeling they would sort it out for summer.

Just because a small minority of idiots ride them around dangerously it doesn't mean we should as a country ban them from being used, all we need is to get some safety standards in place let's just punish those actually being a nuisance rather than making broad statements about scooters... they are not any more dangerous than bicycles or ebikes. Its great news that the law is changing and personally look forward to commuting on one! They are a great option for green travel at a budget for responsible riders. I welcome such things as speed restrictions, helmet wearing and not riding on pathways with pedestrians but people out there begging for the government to baby the whole country with a outright ban because they don't like something is ridiculous.

May 10th is when the business for the next parliamentary year is announced so technically it could be April next year before it's legal. They will spend months thrashing out the legalities and new regulations.

I've got a sinking feeling that these laws are not going to come in until 2023.

As I said before many times speed limit should be 20mph so we ( scooter riders) are not in danger of cars riding at speed limit - most of the car drivers are irritated if someone is slower in front of them making them driving dangerously. For eBikes limit should be 750w as 250w is not enough for delivery riders.

They will need to have similar specification and safety features as the rental ones, Which means they're going to need to have 2 brakes, So most of the e scooters that have been sold won't be legal, unless they count an electric front brake, I was reading this earlier because my daughter told me lol.

Tiny wheels in the UK's pot holes will be fun when the E-Scooter comes to a sudden halt in front of a truck or bus. No air bags to save you,they are more safe on paths at the correct speed in cycle lanes,but E-Bikes for adults at least need to be same speed as USA a ie 20-25 MPH before i pay the silly price of the sluggish 250w 15 MPH assist joke on a road i nthe UK.

Hang on to your basic low power model. They're the ones that are the most likely to be legal. 15.5mph is plenty in town.

I heard somewhere people recon it will be legal to ride private electric scooters by November, but hopefully will be sooner. I’ve enjoyed riding the rental trial ones but can’t afford to risk a fine or points on my driving license so welcome the new legislation. I’ve got one sitting here so can’t come soon enough. Anyone got a better idea when it will actually be legal? It’s good news, but it’s taken far too long to sort it out.

Seeing is believing, I've waited over 14 years for this. The problem I see is will they use sense and bring in sensible rules, or will they bring in the rules you mentioned, if they bring in the rules you mentioned it would be fine for those who live on a levelled environment, but not much good if you live out side of a major city, and even some cities the rules you speak of would make these things more dangerous than a bicycle. 15 mph is too slow, 20 the city speeds makes more sense, because you can keep up with traffic, also the motor limit you mentioned is too low, if you get a fat person on an escooter with a 250 or 500 watts motor trying to climb a hill that thing is not going anywhere. A speed restriction of the city limit of 20 mph with a 1000 watts to cater for the larger rider. Perhaps put in a weight restriction as they do in California the heavier you are you can have a more powerful machine, but the speed is capped. A larger motor does not necessarily mean a faster vehicle or lorries would be going 200 mph. We shall see where this legislation goes, all those scooters that people have been using may become illegal. If they do, we will need adaptations so they can be legalised again. So we may get what we want but end up worse off than we already are. Evil gene seems to strike a chord here, let's just wait and see if the govt uses sense or stupidity like they did with the electric bike market and destroyed it, until everyone started ignoring the law and made their ebikes go faster. Also one other thing, what of the EUCs this legislation may make EUCs illegal or Eskateboards. Em we are happy about Escooters but what of these and other future developments.

Don't worry about the actual starting date everyone. Once they have agreed to legalising them, they will stop pulling them anyway. So things like normal for the people currently using them.

Great news, bought a used Decent X7 ,great fun,and as a regular cyclist it's a welcome relief from pedalling,will still use the bike for the health benefits.

Tip, if you're not an idiot on the scooter, use lights + don't speed, police tend to leave you alone. Don't think they have the funding to stop them all now. seeing hundreds of them on the streets.

I hope to god you don't need to have a licence to ride these things if they are privately owned, yes I agree some kind of helmet should be used but it's so convenient for people who don't want to have a motorbike licence or car licence some people just don't want to go through all of that so maybe implement some speed laws but nothing crazy...

Ill be purchasing my first escooter this year as I still can not afford to pay for a motorbike or the insurance. Ive had a back ground in doing motorcross so relatively powerful machines (250cc) and ive been looking at the basic escooters, 250 and 350 watt variants and im not overly excited if im honest. Got my eye on a Kaabo wolf warrior 10x with an impressive top speed but ill stick to 15.5 mph so the boys in blue (police and the torys) dont have a shitfit. Open it up on quieter cycle lanes when i have a chance. Loads of steep inclines around my area too and lots of greenery so will need it to be comfy and rugged enough. If you ride like complete tool and have your scooter confiscated then you brought it on yourself. My opinion should be that you should be able to ride any scooter you want as long as its safe and you dont ride like a dumbass.

Wish they legalize it. Its like bikes cant run more than 40kph also. I miss riding my EUC

Air quality will improve when this legislation is passed. I think more people will get out of their cars for short journeys causing less congestion and improving travel times . Less wear on road surfaces . Less RTA’a will improve insurance premiums . Police will have more time for serious crimes . Local shops and business will benefit from increased business . It may be possible that a long lasting recession can also be prevented with a boost to the economy from a boom in purchases of scooters and associated parts . In my opinion they are less dangerous than bicycles that can easily exceed 15 mph. The government can also gain some popularity if they are fair and go with a light approach with a low amount of taxation e.g £12 yearly registration with a sticker to indicate this or a one off fee for each scooter for life . Only a provisional licence required , minimum age 16 liability insurance optional at riders own risk . Maybe an online training course with certificate on completion to teach provisional licence holders some road etiquette . If someone is caught riding in an antisocial manner I believe that seizure would be the best option to punish the rider with a small fine . The government are hell bent on reducing speed limits and pollution what better way is there to do this ?

Bro as far as i'm concerned they should be treated about the same as electric bikes and by that i mean they should be allowed on both roads and pavements and no i do not want to hear from salty karens how dangerous would it be to allow them on pavements because Pedestrians are literally the biggest danger on a pavement because they pay 0 attention to where they are going and have their noses stuck in their phones at all times it is in fact those bike/scooter riders that actually do pay attention to their surroundings because they need to always be on a lookout for those annoying peds so if anything it is in fact pedestrians who should stop being a nuisance to bike/scooter riders instead of other way around. Like its so infuriating riding my bike on a pavement thats wide enough it could fit 6 or 7 people and not being able to overtake 2 people because of how unpredictably they walk. Like they always bounce from left to right randomly and pay no attention to their surroundings in any way because eyes are glued to their phones and music plays at full blast in their ears preventing them from hearing my bell.

My scooter was a present from my wife in the first lockdown as my mental health took a nosedive after working 5 days a week at 100 mph to 0 mph overnight due to having to stay at home. The scooter was a lifeline and I used it the one time a day we we’re allowed out of our cages. I was mindful of road and pavement users always giving way and allowing for the 2 metre social distancing. Once things started to loosen up with restrictions I noticed a lot of e scooter users being stopped by police so I did some digging to find that they are clamping down on privately owned scooters and imposing points on your license. My job needs me to have a clean license so the risk of getting stopped was too great and my scooter has been locked up, gathering dust in my garage. I’ve held on to it in the hope that one day I can get back out on it without the risk of points and losing my job. Is this day on the horizon?, I bloody hope so. 🤞🏼

They should be allowed upto 30mph as that's the speed of the road. I was actually about to buy one for work but then found government rats made it illegal to own one which is crazy considering you can rent them.
