Hello FLYING CAMERA CREW.
Today we look at a few beginner drone tips for editing footage: “The Big Ted Method!”. Most is from my DJI Mini 3 Pro and Mini 2 drones. Most beginners focus on getting cinematic drone footage, but in today’s episode we talk about why I think storytelling is a more fruitful goal with editing. It’s much harder but substantially more fun & creative than simply pursuing a rich “cinematic” color grade.
The editing program I use is LUMAFUSION. It has all the features I need and not a ton of features I don’t use. Editing on LUMAFUSION is incredibly fast & fun. I tried all the popular editing programs like Premiere Pro, Davinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro and others. Editing took way too long to complete with those programs because they’re too complicated, designed to accomplish complicated tasks that I’ll never do. Just my opinion based on all my testing.

your edit is way better...their edits has so many transitions which looks annoying and so many jerky movements. They could have also done a little color grading because the footages are so flat looking. Adding a little saturation and contrast would have improve thier edits a little bit.

Hi Ted. Awesome video. My #1 focus on a video is sound design. With the right audio, I find that my footage almost edits itself. I spend time listening to my music before I edit so I have an idea on what type of shots I "feel" in the beat. I love waking up to a new video from you. Thank you so much for making the start of my day a great one!

There is a great saying I love that highlights this methinks "Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep." A little flavour of my home environment, all shot from my barge: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7Dsy94p9HIQ.html I know this is not great but its a flavour. PS your little movie was much more fun, the other two's transitions were over the top and cliché.

Ted, I am glad you did this installment dealing with editing. Editing can be really daunting for beginners ( such as myself ) so a bit of a primer is a big help. One of the things you are pretty consistent in with your videos is the notion of storytelling, and it was nice to see you give this little tutorial that lays in some useful foundations to build on. I have been using many of your tips, tricks and creative suggestions in my more recent projects and when I sat back and watched it, the end result was really impressive for someone just learning how capture the video, and then use an editor to frame and present the story. Without any of that input, I am pretty sure it would have ended up 'just another drone video'... The other thing I found, and it goes to your point of evoking emotion or triggering an emotional response, sound layering for effect, and also selecting a score that is consistent with your intended message / narrative is massively powerful in delivery. If you get a chance, check out my latest and let me know your thoughts. This is turning out to be a lot more fun and rewarding than I had hoped in the beginning, and I honestly believe that having someone to look to, who is passionate on the subject, but also willing to share knowledge in a thoughtful and demonstrable way has really helped people to be more deliberate in their planning and production efforts to a degree that it really becomes an artistic pursuit. Not only that, but I love how it creates excuses to get out and take notice of things we often take for granted.

Dang! How did I miss this initially. Sorry for the late reply and thank you for the kind supportive note. What editing program are you using? You say editing can be daunting for beginners. I TRULY believe that programs like Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve are way way way too sophisticated for non-professionals. A more sophisticated editing program will not improve the footage. Only better cinematography will actually improve the footage. I am a huge fan of LUMAFUSION. I am going now to your channel and will give some thoughts on your videos. Super excited. And super grateful my playful little tutorials provide some value. Welcome aboard.

The 2 paid editors were very similar. The hard transitions and speed ramping made the videos almost unwatchable. So your style of more relaxed video versus fast, crazy jump cuts and hard transitions is night and day difference. Hopefully, if you do this again you could explain to whoever is doing it that you want that relaxed style. Not that NYC style.

hey Danny. I didn’t want to influence the editors in any way. That fast paced edit/music is very popular. Not my cup of tea, but it is popular. So the Fiverr editors gave me what’s popular. I’m curious to see their personal video edits….their editing style without the paid client dynamics involved here.

I am looking for a editor software I’m currently using hitfilm express and I’ve used we video and oneshot befre and I want to exaport my videos in 4K but all the video editors require me to pay for the higher resolution so if I am going to pay then I might as well pick a good editor I am new at editing but I do know that adjusting Color and such especially with drone footage is important like premiere has but it’s out of my hobby price range. Any suggestions?

Unless your working in a 1080 timeline and your footage is 4k, cropping into your video is fine, footage will remain clean. However if you crop into a 4k video with 4k footage your footage will come out soft and look blurry depending on go much you crop in.

I find that accelerating the video makes it a lot more choppy. I’m taking note of your cropping ideas… improves the composition! Yeah… I like your edit the most. Side note, that tree behind you at 11min. You should have it cut down… it’s dead and risks coming down on a windy day and could cause damage and/or injury.😅 Great video and MasterClass! Thanks!!

Hmmm 🤔 I see many content creators doing some great edits, slick but other than 30 secomds of fascination, no emotional content……and then there’s CapCut that’s I’ve tried for fun but it come out, well, like it’s been done by a computer that doesn’t understand emotions. Our Inner Brings know what feels right, music, cuts, fades etc. I like putting in the sound in edit, ambient, specific which since we’re all drone cinematographers here is essential I think. All the added sounds can be as emotional as any music, may even not need the music at all, nice to have a break from it on videos sometimes. Point in case, many motorcycle reviewers have music overlayed during the ride sequence completely forgetting that the sound of a good bike is what makes us initially love them. Any thoughts on sound production and use?? I’ve taken shots of my Harley then found a good sound on RU-vid (royalty free). Boy does it sound better than any music even if cheating a little. Keep up the great work please 🙏😁 PS. How about a video challenge to use sounds but no music as an exercise??

Great video as ever Ted. The Fiver contributions really highlight the vast gap in creativity and storytelling compared to the footage you create. I used to use animation and logo creators on Fiver but soon realised that putting the work in myself can produce far better results, while learning more at the same time. Please keep these videos coming as they inspire me to get out with the drone, in between the standard British rain storms of course. 😉

My opinion. I enjoyed all of the edits. I mean, after all…… This is essentially, Vacation Video. That moves. And all of the edits had a great feeling of, moving and moving me. They were all, intriguing, edits. And each one felt vastly different. While all sharing a common denominator. In, how everybody felt it. Yeah. I would have possibly had more raucous editing fun. With your footage. I love some flippy, video edits. To bounce you on your head. A bunch of zoom blasts. A spin-a-Roo here and there. Something that goes pop. And some musical stings. At those places. It certainly was interesting. To see these three different concept edits. I don't much need a story line. I just need a mood. A feeling. More than a feeling. But it's too cold in, Boston. So we won't go there. I'm down here in the Southwest. Where even flies will have problems with the heat and dehydration. It's bad when you see a fly panting. Then you have to ask. What are you doing fly? And fly has already gotten, crusty. And says nothing. Hmmm? Can you please pass the smooth, Peanut Butter. RemyRAD

There really was no art to them. I realise that all these things I am putting into my editing are things I've learnt from you. Here was my first effort yesterday just edited on a free phone app, hence the frame size error I still have to fix.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-H81ePfyj1k4.html

ahh man thank you brother. Do you ride? I truly miss LA. I can see moving back there at some point. Build another chop & find myself a little honey. Do some desert runs out to Joshua Tree with the cowboys. But mostly sit on the couch and edit new youtube episodes, endlessly snacking on protein bars that taste exactly like cookie dough.

@@TedNemeth I have an 150 Honda enduro, but I don't have my motorcycle license, so I barely get to enjoy it. it's currently in storage. I'm waiting until I have a garage to put her in before I make the move and get my certification. Desert runs to Joshua Tree sound like a blast, i'd 100% join ya on that trek. There's endless content out here, I feel like you have a West Coast editing style that could benefit Hollywood productions... maybe an Inspire 3 in your future? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-T5IgH__lL7I.html&ab_channel=DJI I know I want one!

It looks like your fiverr editors took your footage and put it in an auto-generator. I do that with my GoPro videos and it comes out fine, but it only takes about 20 seconds and doesn't really have any soul to it. I can't see how the fiverr service can do anything other than generic material, like what you might see in an ad. I feel like videos are best when the editor has a personal connection to the content.

hey my friend. I edit on a 2018 iPad Pro using LUMAFUSION. I can play multiple 8k videos at the same time and iPads have no problem. IPads are better than laptops or desktops. (my opinion!). And I love the tough screen interface for editing. makes it super fast and fun.

hey buddy. I watched 2 of your videos….I’m not sure your question when you say the “video quality is not so good?” The quality of the footage or the editing?
@Drone-pk

@@TedNemethasking about the quality, is it good as i feel its not as compared to yours. Mines feel that it has pixilated alot. And can you tell how to smooth zoom in with the controller without the built in screen. As for now a jurking zoom effect happens on taping the zoom button on mobile screen is the only availability. Want to do as like in rc controller with a scrolls on top works.

I expected a bit better from the paid editors. Their edits are a collection of random shots, with flashy transitions and occasional text splashing to distraction! I know it's hard when you are given limited images to edit and tell a story. Your video with its surprise ending was at least smoother and entertaining. Thanks for the tips. I will now focus on storytelling and getting far, mid and close shots.

Thanks for sharing, loving your videos and the stories you're telling. Funny story: Been recording some "drone footage" for my municipality's park team. Originally, they wanted "just" raw drone footage of the urban parks with the editing to be done by their marketing team. But then their parks commissioner pulled me to the side and asked me to do all the editing as well because he felt I'm telling stories that their marketing team (i.e. the "pros") aren't getting across. So yeah, totally with you, it's sooooooo much more than just editing - it's the narrative, the story, the emotional responses we're generating.😊 Keep up the amazing stories you're telling - loving it 🤩

Hi Ted. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this topic. It was an interesting experiment. When ever I complete a video I find it curious to search for content with the same subject matter to see how others film and edit their videos. The technique of shooting wide/medium/close seems to be part of the foundation of great cinematography. I now try to employ an element of story telling in my videos. Music, as you have said plays a huge part along with cutting to the rhythm of the music and the all important sound design. Taking a break from editing for a day or 2 is great advice. Far too often I gotten so engrossed into a project, editing for hours to finish & publish it. Only to find after a few days or so, I`ve made simple mistakes or missed opportunities. Unnecessary cuts and garish transitions tends to detract from the overall finish of the video. It`s all to tempting when you have a myriad of transition at your disposal to get carried away with them all. I know i did, initially. Keep up the great content.

Between outlining the story, shooting the scenes, editing, and finalizing the project it can become quite daunting but practice and perseverance will pay big rewards in the end.
