My Drone Cinematography MasterClass is FINISHED!
Hey Flying Camera Crew! Welcome to another playful beginner drone tutorial for more cinematic drone footage. The whole gist here is drone beginners are spending a disproportionate amount of time on drone nd filters and drone settings: a huge distraction from creativity & practicing cinematography, which are the only true path to cinematic drone footage.

I'm confused, Ted. As a beginner, I'm really gravitating towards your instructional videos compared to the other many channels, because I like your focus more on the artistic approach, rather than obsessing over the settings. BUUUUUT...in this video, you favored the ND64 filter as your go-to during mid-day flight....but 6 months ago, during one of your videos, you were all about the ND32. So what changed your mind between then and now?

This was so informative Ted. Trying to learn drone cinematography on most YT channels has led to so much procrastination that creativeness gets suffocated. Always appreciate how you try to emphasise on cinematography/creativity to enable newbies like me to actually go out and film. Bravo, Sir 👏🏻👏🏻

Thank you Paul! I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. Yup it’s easy to get overly distracted by the hundreds of settings & accessories available in our hobby. It’s a pretty complicated hobby compared to a hobby like…..water color painting. Much less distractions/options.

Fantastic video Ted, with some absolute gems! I particularly love the idea of thinking of myself as a landscape videographer. Its so odd, but as a landscape photograpger who started making videos, it has never occurred to me before to think of myself as a landscape videographer, yet that's such a perfect fit! And I think you're spot on that thinking of myself that way, and as a Storyteller too, will make a big shift in my work. I'm still fairly new to drone filming, but I immediately was more interested in learning what looked good and trying to practice aerial cinematography than the technical aspects. I spent one day letting my partner fly it, because I thought he'd do a better job than me (because hes a pilot 🤣) and as I watched him zooming it all over the place I realised that not only did the way he flew it cause me anxiety, but more importantly he would likely never film shots the way I'd like, because to him it was about flying, whereas to me it was about filming. We both decided he wouldnt fly it again 😄

I have learned the same thing as you recently. After about 75 flights.......... I was worried about my 4k settings. When I'd come home and plug my SD card into my "smart tv" ...... I was ruined. Most of my footage was stuttering and choppy and some static. Guess what......? My TV is not 4k. Sonofabitch!!! So I've been taking vids in1080p. Until I realized my pc was what I should have been looking at my vids on.

Hi Ted, been watching your channel here in the UK for a while now and i just love your simplistic aproach on this and the way you concentrate more on the creative side rather than getting bogged down with all those confusing settings and just waisting your valuable flying time. I was getting lost in a see of videos regarding ND filters and so confused as to what ones I should buy and use for for any given situation or weather conditions, that was untill I watched this one, I am now going order just the nd64 for video and an nd1000 for long exposure photos 👌 Keep up the good work my friend and thanks for keeping it reel 👊

hey Ken. I have the Mini 3 Pro which only has Normal & D-Cinelike. I NEVER use D-Cinelike. My testing showed (to me) there was little to no perceivable benefit to justify the effort of restoring the exposure & color. So i always use Normal color profile. But D-Log is a genuine Log profile. If I owned a drone that had D-Log I would still shoot in Normal color profile for most local flights (to save time in editing). But when I go to a special scene I would record in D-Log.

Hi Ted I mostly use auto while filming and manual for photo. When I had the Mini1 on sunny days my filter was the ND32. On cloudier days I try the ND16 or even ND8 before taking off and use the entire session. Now with the Mini3 Pro I start with the ND64 or ND64PL depending where I am flying. I tend to have my videos a little under exposed and correct on post.

Charlie I really appreciate it good sir. You’re a physics teacher?! Love it. I’ve become obsessed with quantum entanglement. About 10 years ago I learned about that phenomenon and realized there is an invisible communication matrix in the universe that allows correlated particles to communicate. “Spooky action at a distance.”….is how Albert Einstein described it. For the last 80 years the smartest minds in the world can’t crack that mystery. I guess it’ll take a quantum computer to inform us?

@@TedNemeth 4 Years! And a couple years in grad school studying some more physics after that. I have a video called the real physics of tenet that you might like if you’re into it. I did sort of run away though and became an ethicist? Ended up getting a degree in bioethics after teaching physics. And now I’m a writer and TikToker freelancing and creating. And I still consider myself a teacher. Just now in short form snippets and bits - because that is one form of what post-digital pedagogy looks like.

I'm very curious though....because 6 months ago, he was all about the ND64 during mid-day flight...but NOW he's all about the ND32. So I'm conflicted and curious as to why the shift.

SO much in this vid...I had to watch it twice....you're spot on....I remember one of my first recorded flights I got some awesome footage and was just feeling the scene...after that-spending so much time trying to learn all of the cam settings to have so much effort just hindering my own capabilities....I had been starting to think I was just really bad at this....but your advice and explanations are just so on point....maybe there's hope for us plebs yet ! Thanks Ted!

@TedNemeth l haven't been riding since l had a motorcycle accident in Vancouver a year ago. I was going to ride my adventure motorcycle in Iceland this summer, and l had planned on filming some of mybrides with my drone, but l ended up spending most of my time renovating our house 😀

right on! Yup keeping it simple is crucial with such a complex hobby like a flying video camera. Focusing on the beautiful timeless fundamentals of lighting and composition are the only things that will actually improve footage. If you have any specific topics you’d like me to cover please let me know. Welcome aboard sir.

Love your videos. Very down to earth and usable. You are the epitomy of the KISS principle....keeping things simple. I am who you are talking to....new to the drone game and wanting to create good cinematic footage. I do not want to knock individuals who express their artform through exactness....but newbees can find that exactness (in exacting recommended choices and actions) a bit overwhelming when at the beginning of their drone cinematic journey. Just a shout out that I love your approach, communications style, and helpfulness!!!

I do. I have a 2019 HD Road Glide CVO. My first was the one in my pic which was a 2006 HD Heritage Classic. I hope to combine my love of riding with my photography taking high end studio quality motorcycle shots....once I fully retire. @@TedNemeth

@@TedNemethWell, I certainly meant it! Feel free to ignore the following ramble: I have mixed emotions about drone-focused RU-vidrs pushing products. My wife and I have a couple of 50’s cars and it’s extremely hard to find a body shop that will work on them because they have to get the work sent to them from insurance companies done first. If they don’t, the insurance companies will stop sending them business and that’s their proverbial bread and butter. Drone RU-vidrs (most video/photography channels, in general) remind me of that. I certainly understand why they do it but that doesn’t make me hate it any less. I discovered your channel yesterday and after two videos, I subbed (and I’m fairly stingy with my subs!). Your approach is different and I love it. Ramble over - thanks again!

@@velvetjones8634 - yessss! I’m a 50s car fanatic. A few years ago I had to sell my BELOVED 1955 Caddy Coupe Deville- That’s my only regret in life so far. What 50’s babys are you currently the custodians of? PS - I’m going to sleep now so if I don’t reply right away….don’t take it personal.

@@TedNemeth Those Cadillacs are DOPE! A friend of mine has a 52 - sorry you sold yours! My wife has a 58 Thunderbird and I have a 55 Bel Air. Neither are anywhere near show condition but they’re still fun to cruise in occasionally. Keep up the good work, my man!
