Thank you! :) Glad to hear most everyone agrees it's wedding appropriate. I was starting to second guess it towards the end haha.

I love that you take your time on things. When I first started sewing, inspired by other great sewists on RU-vid, I pushed myself to sew quickly and try to get things done in a day or two and I learned that not only does that end with me making a lot of mistakes, but it just doesn't work for my stay at home mom of 4 life. So it's nice to see someone else taking days to complete a project instead of just a few hours, haha!
@Ujika

I read somewhere " If you want to finish fast, go really slow( baste, pin, press, make a mock up, check if everything fits well, etc.) I am a mom of 1 and it takes me 3 weeks to make 2 crewnecks.
@PurpleKya
@PurpleKya 5 месяцев назад
@@Ujika that's really true! It sure beats redoing and the pride you have after knowing you did everything as well as you could and ending up with a beautifully finished garment is unmatched

Thank you! Yes same, I often feel like I should be moving quicker but it always feels better to take my time and make sure things are finished as well as I possibly can. And yes free time is a huge factor! So happy you found it encouraging 😊❤️ Thanks for watching & happy sewing at whatever pace fits your life. ❤️

I think for the bust cups, they're the right size or at least close and you probably don't need foam, but the height of the bodice put the underbust line too low so you're not really filling out the cup. try pulling the straps up to see if you fill them out more, and if that works you can probably just shorten the straps but for future versions you might want to make the bodice longer. and defs doublecheck the width of the gore (the space between the cups) bc that does seem too narrow. But you did a great job overall, i hope you're able to fix the fit issue because it's a beautiful dress!
@CaitMakes
@CaitMakes 5 месяцев назад
This is so helpful, thank you!! I’ll definitely play around with the height of the straps and see if that helps as well. I was really struggling to figure out what the issue was exactly, but the height of the bodice makes a lot of sense! ❤️

I love your version!!! Unfortunately I made the same mistake when sewing in the bust cups. It's because you're not supposed to sew down the lining of the bodice as if it's a separate piece. I skipped that part of her tutorial because I thought I knew what needed to be done. Basically the curved seams on the bodice need to be left raw for when you attach the bust cups. When you sew the lining on the bodice, you should only do it for the side parts. I felt really dumb after I realised! But it turned out ok, like yours did! Amazing fabric and detail ideas! :) The next one will turn out better! ;)

Hi . I haven’t finished watching the video at the moment of making this comment , but wanted to share that I used to have the same issue with the serger residual trash everywhere. I hated it too. Until I discovered putting the little tool basket that came with my model in the spot under the knife to pick up the little fabric strips . Idk if you got that little basket with your serger but any small box will work. Thank you for making the video, I will continue watching now.

Also YAY for setting up your serger - now you can do knit fabrics super quick because you won't really need to use your sewing machine as often! This is so beautiful and I definitely agree that it is wedding appropriate. The main reason you're not supposed to wear white to a wedding is because a lot of wedding dresses come in ivory for fair skin tones to not be washed out, so if a wedding guest wears white it makes the brides dress look bad in photos. Because that color isn't a bright white it will be fine. :)

I love that pattern from Daria Patternmaking! I’ve used it so many times! And I love your take on it!! For the cups you put right sides together on a finished part (as if there was still seam allowance on the curved part where the cups go) so you would have had to top stitch the cups into place instead (with the cups under to keep the shape. I think her tutorial showed it that way. It’s usually the way I do it otherwise I’d need to not sew the lining to the bodice and put the cups in first with lining separate. If that’s confusing it’s because i suck at explaining 🤣

Aw I am positive your versions are gorgeous! Thanks so much! I can't say that I quite follow haha, but I'll definitely double check the order or operations for the lining/cups next time because it's highly likely that I went rogue by accident haha. Thanks so much for watching birthday twin! :)

I really-really recommend reading and studying the manual for your serger! It should have all of the info for serging different fabrics and how to adjust your machine for them, so basically why what worked for your main fabric, didn't work for the lining. I keep mine somewhere I can reach it every time I use my serger, it really makes a difference.

The reason why there is to little fabric in the middle is because your suppose to sew the cups and lining flat together rather than sewing them facing either and turning it over if that makes sense xx you have basically made the bodice fold twice xx

I dont know how the tutorial tells you how to sew it, and I know that there really a million different ways and methods to sew something together, but I would sew the pretty fabric all together including the cups, have a fitting to see if the cups sit okay, then sew all the lining together including the cups, THEN attach the lining to the outer shell right sides together with the straps sandwiched between. Top stitch the lining down along the whole length, then add the channeling. Etc. I made a similar top last week and this was the easiest way for my brain to comprehend what was going on and it was easy to double check everything before getting too far in the weeds. AND I had the same problem with the cups not filling out very well on the bottom. I fixed it by adding cup inserts and hand stitching them to the seam allowances of the cup, it’s definitely due to the height of the bodice cup hole being too low for where our natural breast starts I am glad I’m not the only one who has love hate relationship with gathered skirts lol
@CaitMakes
@CaitMakes 5 месяцев назад
Thanks for sharing your experience! That process definitely sounds more intuitive than the way I did it, I might give that a try next time and see how it goes! Glad I'm not the only one who had an issue with the bodice length! I'm excited to give it another try in the future with all that in mind. Haha gathered skirts are a love hate relationship FOR SURE! :) Thanks for watching & happy sewing!

@CaitMakes
@CaitMakes 5 месяцев назад
Thank you! I put a little paragraph in the description where I go into a bit more detail, but overall I'm not 100% happy with the current fit of the bust cups, but I think adding foam cups will fix the issue. Some very helpful commenters have also helped me realize that I think the issue is with the length of the bodice, so I'm going to try to adjust the strap length as well. Not the perfect fit I was looking for yet, but I think it can get there with some minor tweaks and I know what to adjust next time I make it. :) Hope that's helpful!

This dress is gorgeous! How many yards would you recommend buying for a size 4?
@CaitMakes
@CaitMakes 5 месяцев назад
Thank you! Oh gosh that’s a hard one. Unfortunately figuring that out always takes a bit of math before hand. Make sure to look at the fabric recommendations on the actual pattern and then for the skirt that I did you can figure out how much you’ll need based on your measurements (waistx3) and (first panel width x3) for the width and then the length you want for each panel. If I was going to guess off the top of my head I’d say you’d need an addition yard to mine so 4, but it’s always safer to do some annoying math first instead. 😊 Hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching!
