Hardly any msians nowadays make it from the scratch.. I mean like prawn paste, we normally buy the ready-made. But you really go the extra mile.. never give up even if you don’t find it.. you’d do it your own. Good job you both👍😀

Buying a bottle of petis / shrimp sauce is waay cheaper rather than buying a kilo of prawn just to make the sauce lol

SmaN HussiN agreed, it’s much cheaper to buy the ready made. But just imagine if you’re in HK or some other country where you do not find that paste.. would you make it your own? If u ask me, I’d rather cook something else.. 😅

Prawn paste or otak udang is usually used by Chinese for their laksa. Malay laksa most of the time do not use this.

When I was in Japan, i used my friend's recipe. And it was so simple. Just blend fish and onion. And add asam keping. I used udon as laksa noodle. It was still delicious.

Many states have their version of asam laksa, n there is also Thai laksa and Nonya Asam Laksa (my nonya neighbour used to make it). Kedah asam laksa has found its way to KL as Ah Cheng Laksa.

When we say laksa penang we claim that its originated from penang. When we say asam laksa, it is general. But actually, they are the same 😂😂😂

I also cook asam laksa during MCO and it took me 3hrs to prepare and cook but definitely worth the effort. Will cook it again, and thanks for loving Malaysian food.

Tips :- You can use udon noodle as a substitute for laksa noodle. As for dried chili, I always cut them vertically so the seeds fall off easily. And you can blend the chilies together with the onions.

Toast Box HK is Singapore Laksa which is Laksa Lemak not Penang Assam Laksa

For me I would shred the cooked fish with fork so it retain some texture and make the broth look nicer. I also like to garnish with mint leaves and chopped slightly ripe mango along with the traditional garnish. Didn't know one could make black prawn sauce that easy, learn something new from you guys!

"Every" state in Malaysia has its own kind of laksa you should try making all the variation that there are: Laksam (Kelantan), Laksa Sarawak, Laksa Kedah/Utara, Laksa Johor -- Laksa Johor and Sarawak would have more accessible noodle, laksam, you might need to make the noodle from scratch, but after all you guys always make unbelievable things from scratch anyway!

Congrats to both of u for successfully making asam laksa. It looks so delicious 😋. My tummy keeps on singing when both of you eating the meal😆. U can add hard boiled egg for more fullfilling taste of the soup. Plus u could also use udon to replace the laksa noodle itself as it is thicker and quite similar to the laska noodle texture. I used udon all the time when cooking laksa since i live in Japan now.

IChang & Jimmy congratulation. You made it perfectly... Never mind to put some more laksa soup and don't forget to add boil eggs in the bowl because it will taste better. Don't afraid to eat the laksa leaves and the ginger bud (bunga kantan) because it will give more richness on it's taste, believed me.

The accidental oil that Jimmy put in , it is alright to have a little oil.As for the pineapple,we use as garnishing and not blend into soup. But I admire your self made Prawn Paste.Good work.

Wow...that looks delicious...oh yes sometimes I follow che nom’s receipe and usually it is successful...I love asam laksa or penang’s laksa because the ingredients is easy to get and of course it is always fresh...in my hometown Sarawak we can get fresh ginger buds or daun kesum ...next time please try Sarawak laksa...
