To reduce or eliminate orange peel, use a slower reducer and hardener (activator). Also, make sure your target material is up to temp (70 F or higher). The booth may be 70F but your target might be considerably lower, use a temp gun to check it. For someone who says he's not a painter, you are showing a lot of willingness to learn and become better and frankly, your work looks pretty darn good!

I used to paint custom bikes for trek, and aircraft in the air national guard. Most of my skill was developed painting bikes though. Every painter does things a little differently, and yet different strategies can all end up with the same amazing results. You learn your formula when you paint a lot. I set my gun at lower pressure than most, and sprayed heavy layers with clear. The trick was getting the perfect amount of hardener.

Like the homemade booth. I think you need better clear. I use cheap harbor freight gun with good clear and get great results.

I'm not a painter but the air flow could be causing the orange peel by evaporating the solvents too quickly. I like the suggestion to flip the fans around and let them pull the air through the massive filter wall into the booth.

Looking good... try to find some ducting hose 6 to 8 in. dia.. To run out the garage door from your booth. Attach a filter with a fan to draw the air out to the outside [exhaust]. You can use a small fan [intake] to push some air in . The key is the exhaust pulling the air out. It is tough not being a actual booth. But it can get close and really help. Much easier to paint the hood off the truck and roof and bed separately and individually like your planning. Especially since you can. All in all looking good and looking forward to the video. Sure wish you were going to paint match and put the topper back on it... I know it's a old man thing lol... 😎👍

Hvlp . High volume low pressure. Had a painter tell me he runs two air lines to the gun and sprays around 7-10 Ibs of air. 👍🏽🇺🇸👍🏽

Most paint manufacturers recommend 1.2 tip and 20-24 psi for clear and 15-18 psi for solvent paint and 20-22 psi water based paint and 70 to 80% overlap

I like your thoroughness with every build, u never half ass things you either do it a 100% or not at all. Your a perfectionist and rightfully so, your work speaks for itself. This Tacoma build is coming along nicely can’t wait till it’s finished. Will you be doing anything else to the 4runner? Maybe repaint it or completely wrap it?

Check the clear coat manufacturers spraying viscosity recommendations using a viscosity cup you can then spray with correct viscosity clear coat which will be a more consistent material regardless of temperature

That looks really good, I paint in my garage too and have tried and changed my fan set up a few times, still not 100% happy with it, but the exhaust fumes need to be goin outside. through the roof or wall honestly, even tho the filters catch the partials, the solvent getting recirculated back through your intake fan might be causing some of you paint issues.

Not a bad results with the new products/equipment . I wouldn't worry too much on orange peel effect, I see it as a dust coat finish for final flatting . you always going get dust specks and so forth in home booth spraying anyway so flatting and polishing pretty much a must for glassy finish, as long as clear texture minimal and more importantly no dry edges or bad runs you doing good as can easily get final finish you want once paint hard . I like you idea of doing paint in manageable amounts , easier focus and time manage to keep on top of spray results that way . Paint can be a frustrating process .

Hey Mr. Clean freak 😀 In your last video I seen you using a push broom and wanted to say something. In this video you keep talking about dirt and dust. Purchase a 24 inch dust mop with disposable mops and dust spray. With the proper technique left to right and shaking the dust mop outside. The dust will stick to the floors and will seal your floors. In time your floors will seal and shine.

Hi Austin. TE10 air cap with the 1.2 fluid tip does amazing for clear, 29 psi at the regulator. TE20 and 1.3 for solvent base coat with pressure around 24-26 psi. Teknas have been my go to base gun since i started in the trade 13 years ago. iv always had multiply guns, my base guns and my clear guns, for clear im using a iwata supernova ws400 with a 1.3 tip. if you ever need any help with product lines or info shoot me a message.

I think you may be laying it a little heavy on each coat you make. How about you maintain more distance with your gun. Maybe a couple inches away from your usual. I think that'll help. Other than that you're doing a great job painting.

My dad paid 7k for a paint job and had orange peel all over. Seems to me it probably takes a LOT of practice to be good enough to eliminate it without a buff.

@@austinniemela he normally runs the te20 aircap with full fan, 30psi and 2 1/2 turns out on the fluid. He puts the first coat on as a tack coat and then slows his hand speed on the 2nd coat to lay it on thick. Im sure uve seen how glassy he can get it. Of course he does live in hot australia so if uve tried it his way and it didnt work then its understandable. I have the same gun and get similar to his results with those settings. I was getting loads of orange peel until i slowed down and really punched that clear on.

I'm confused. I thought you were supposed to wear a 'fresh air respirator' to protect your lungs from isocyanates? My instructor wouldn't let me paint my truck if I wore that type of respirator.

These 3m charcoal cartridges work if you keep up on them! Fresh air is better however
