Syd Barrett was a Schizophrenic who took to many Acid trips along the way and was committed to an institution. He would get weekend passes. He was said to show up at the recording studio when this album was being recorded. No one recognized him at 1st as he shaved his head and eyebrows.

Amazing side story was . As the band at Abbey Road Studio was recording this, a person walk in the studio and stood by and watch the band. They were asking each other who was this person, Dave finally saw who he was . It was Syd who this song was about and no one recognized him . They haven't seen him in a few yrs and he was bald no eye brows add many pounds. What a twilight zone event !!!!

This album is kind of a tribute to Syd Barrett, especially this song, Barrett, was one of the co-founders of Pink Floyd in 1964. But his massive use of LSD and other drugs, lead to him destroying his mind, as well as possible schizophrenia. He was forced the leave the band in 1968, and David Gilmour took over for him full time that year. Almost every song on the album has a reference to Barrett. Every time they sing "You" or "He", in the lyrics, they're talking to and about Syd, Syd is the Crazy Diamond, Syd is the one they are missing, "Wish You Were Here". The song "Welcome To The Machine" is all about Syd, the acronym of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is SoYcD,... SYD. Syd Barretts story is a tragic one, and the band members,... still today,... regret not doing anything about it at the time, they were all friends as well as band members. Looking forward to side two, especially "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" Parts 6-9

don't know if he was "force" out of the band . Gilmour said once "on the way to a gig the just didn't pick him up and that was it."

That's true, not only Gilmour, but all of the band said the same thing. Forced out of the band is a questionable way to put it. But none the less they wanted him out, they couldn't put up with his antics any longer, and he was not contributing anything at all to the band. He was a liability at that point.@@jim5247

@@jim5247 Yes. His behavior was becoming increasingly erratic, and they didn't know what to do. They loved Syd, but he simply wasn't "there" anymore. The pain and regret they felt, as well as their hopelessness to help echoed (pun intended) throughout their career and the music they created without him. Syd was ALWAYS a part of the band.

Welcome to the Machine! It’s a great album. The ‘Crazy Diamond’ is Syd Barrett a founding member of the band, but had the leave, from issues with drug addiction, a few years prior.

It always seems to me that the line "random precision" goes over people's heads because it's such an oxymoron and juxtaposition of each other!! I mean random is such an opposite word of precision and when it's used in the same sentence it amazes me that more people don't catch that or at least say something about it?!!

Great reaction Stax!! This album is perfection personified...every track is a masterpiece! That segue into Welcome To The Machine never ceases to give me chills! Hearing this album on a REALLY good stereo system (or headphones) is essential for a fulfilled life!! Cheers.
