8:47 - Remember the extras for season 3, and how David Boreanez got hired as Angel because he was walking down the street with his dog and a talent scout for Buffy saw him and asked him to audition for the role? Yeah. lol
@@johncampbell756 Actually, it's both. In the interview, Boreanez says that his manager was friends with the casting director at the time, and the conversation was basically, "he looks perfect for the part". It sounds like the person became his manager, but they weren't his manager at the time (he says he wasn't signed up when he went into the audition). He had roles as an actor (he even says the person asked if he was an actor) but he wasn't out there with a signboard saying "hello, actor here!"
@@Leafsdude_ And looking perfect for the part meant just that. Joss said he didn't know who to hire and said he only had to check with the women in the room to see who they responded to the best. 😍
@@johncampbell756 He moved to Hollywood to find work as an actor, but took other related jobs, like set crew jobs, to stay visible. And I think his trick for getting an agent was to send letters saying "here's my photo and info as requested" to a bunch of different ones.
A few BTS stuff I remember from the dvd commentary: The Doyle character was created after the actor who played Whistler in Buffy season 2 became unavailable. The Russel character was inspired by then real estate mogul Donald J Trump. The episode titles can sometimes be very spoilery especially during season premieres so you may want to look up the slayer watch guide to know when to not watch them at the beginning of the eps.
According to Max Perlich (Whistler), he was never contacted or approached for Angel. He has often spoke over the years of how much he would have loved to have done Angel if someone had just asked him. Such a shame. I really liked the backstory of Whistler, how he was the one who helped Angel become who he is, and it always seemed so weird that he was just never mentioned again. Max is also a great character actor, I especially enjoyed him on the series, Gilmore Girls. That being said, I grew up watching Glenn Quinn (Doyle) on Roseanne so it was a treat to see him on this show too.
“Really. Can you fly?” ♥️🎭♥️ This probably won’t affect how you watch the show. The first two seasons of Angel played on the same network and same night as Buffy. First Buffy, then Angel. So you can choose to watch alternating episodes to Buffy than Angel. It’s the following two seasons that the watch guide is very helpful for.
I always wondered what the show would have been like with Whistler instead of Doyle, as Doyle's role was initially meant to be Whistler. I'm glad this episode didn't stick with the vampire makeup they used. It was bad. BtVS is designed as a coming of age story. The point of this show right from the start is about starting after the point of coming of age stories. So the darker tone combined with Angel being a vampire works for it. Angel was never drunk. He was only playing drunk to keep an eye on the vampires watching the girls. Watching the opening credits an still not being spoiled by Cordelia. I don't know if that's new off the top of my head, but I loved it.
On the vampire makeup, it would be a new special effects team, potentially trying a new art direction (with the different tone of the show) and likely many other influences. Definitely think it was a mistake to mess with an established formula, but it does make some kind of sense. For Russel specifically, they probably wanted a unique design to reflect his significant age/threat. Boreanaz never being cast as Batman is probably SOME kind of crime too.
They had to do a different design due to the Buffy company owning the copyright. They took over Angel in S2 and the vampire makeup was the same on both from then on.
Yeah, they fortunately ditched a couple of first season elements (the weird vamp make up and the overuse of those fast loud scene transitions) fortunately went away pretty quickly.
It has been theorized that the reason Angel just hung up is because he most likely wasn’t expecting Buffy to be the one to pick up knowing that she should have been off at college and shouldn't have been back home at that point, so most likely he was actually calling Joyce to check on Buffy and see how things were going for her.
Tina can be a nickname for Christina, and she would reflect a long-term investment as she had an ongoing relationship with Russell before he killed her.
Vic Welcome to the other part of The Buffyverse. Give it time it's a brilliant show. This was a strong opener Angel as a character has so much depth in this. Great to see Cordy too, and along with Doyle a great trio in the early days. Great crossover episodes and plotlines too with BTVS. If you keep to the watch order it will make a bit more sense but as you said if you are going to do alternative episodes you will enjoy it the same. Enjoy the show, IMHO the very best episodes of Angel are easily a match for BTVS and many surpass it. Enjoy the show, you will love it. Good Luck.
4:10 Expect to be driven to every emotion imaginable. And that's *Angel* for you. I cried, laughed, grieved. Oh! and genuinely grieved. Buckle up. You're set for an awesome ride. I genuinely wish I could go back, to where you are now. And re-watch it all again.
You're going to love ❤this show and am going to continue to love watching you watch buffy and angel i hope you are having a epic and blessed day and night ❤❤❤100
It's so funny on how the reactionverse is so averse to spoiling Charisma here when she was the first person named in the promo trailer for the new show. It wasn't a surprise back in the day.
@@RedundantHuman-CandyBites Yep. Reactors and TV trailer makers have very different job descriptions. The people who made the trailer were saying "look, Cordelia is in it too," to get Buffy viewers even more interested.
@@bfdidc6604Back in the day I completely understand why they were doing it (pretty much telling the audience what you will get). It was the model of t.v.. Got-sta ‘convince people to tune into our station’ at this hour. It was very competitive. I really like the world of the reactionary content. The magic is for them to know as little as possible so it can feel like we ourselves are watching it for the first time. It brings me much comfort in challenging times.
Yes the vampires look weird just ignore it. They were trying to make LA vampires look distinct from Sunnydale vamps it didn't work and they never do it again.
The look of the vampires in this episode was just an experiment that they tried out, to differentiate them from the ones on Buffy. Fortunately, I think that this was the only episode in which the new look was used.
I was told that there were a few seconds of film left out, where Angel actually does lick Tina's blood after finding her dead body. Which makes sense, considering what Doyle had said about his craving for human blood.
Incorrect trivia. The vampire prothetics for all of Season 1 are different from Buffy. Fir reasons, Angel used a different persin, David Miller, to do the prosthetics. The company that did Buffy hadvthe rights to the design, so David Miller had to create sonething different. Initially, it was too different. They were changed to be closer to the Buffy style. But wete still different, including Angel's. The company that did Buffy was hired to do S2-S5 and the prosthics were then the same as on Buffy. I don't know if Joss wanted the fkadhbacks or not, but Davud Greenwalt, who becane the Angel showrunner, would have shared the decision. David Boreanaz had nothing to do with the decision. In fact, he only visited the writer's offices once at the very beginning of S2 and was never involved in the writing. Yes, they did film Angel touching the blood on Tina's neck, him sniffing then licking one of his finger tips, then rushing to the bathroom to wash his hands. The network said it was too dark and needed to be cut. Tina is short for Christina. I have no idea why they used Christina in the killed counter. That mansion was fantastic and out in Malibu. I was there and just off camera for the entire scenes in the foyer, the stairs and the landingbabovebthe stairs Angel jumps off of with Cordy. You could see Russell's (or his stunt double's) reflection in the glass in the windows as he falls as that was a practical stunt on wires. For the establising shot of the exterior of Russell's office building, there is a woman walking by in a blue shirt. Prop master Courtney Jackson. I was hired the day before the first day of filming. My first day visiting the set was on location at the "Coffee Spot" which is set in Santa Monica but shot down in Manhattan Beach. It was day two or three of shooting. One car accident coukd have ebded the series right there. We break for lunch. I'm in the Coffee Spot parking lot talking to David Miller (prosthetics) and Associate Producer RD Price (previously David Greenwalt's assistant). Joss, David Greenwalt and David Boreanaz omwalk outside. We are all waiting for the crew van to return. Finally they give up waiting and get in the back seats of the crew cab pick up truck that was there. RD says, "Thank God there's no one from the studio or the insurabce company here." David says, "I wish someone could gollow them to maje sure they don't get rear ended." In the back of the pickup were gas station style gas pumps used to refuel all the other crew vehicles. If they git rear evded, they woukd explode killing the star and both show creators. This Angel episide was shot a month before Buffy started gilming because Joss wanted to be able to have enough time to direct both episodes. Itvtakes 8 days to film a Buffy/Angek episode. Some othet shows take less days, some take more time depending on stunts, effects, etc. So it would take 8 days to film Angel, and then 8 days to prep for the Buffy episode. This would also give Angel more time to edit the episodes and write more episodes ahead of the filming schedule. About 8 episodes were written including episode 17. The filming headscarf hit a Brockway when the studio denied the Episode 2 script, which was deemed way too dark. More on this on that ep[some when you get to it. My second day on the job, I got a tour of the Paramount lot by a guy with the same name as mine. We stopped in front of the lighting department building for a second as another John Campbell worked there. I believe both still work at Paramount. Or only the lighting guy does abd my tour guide retired.
It’s only the first episode that had wonky vampire makeup. Joss sent all the new makeup people over to the Buffy set to learn how to do vamp makeup right after this episode wrapped.
@@donsample1002 There was one make-up guy named David Milker. His office was at the Buffy lot directly behind David Greenwalt's new office on the first floor. ImThe effects chabfed but weren't the same until, I believe it was Almost Human took over for the rest of the series. The decision to not use them was before I was hired. I was the guy the drive all the prosthetics to the set each day. I lost a lot of mileage* when they switched back to the other company as they delivered their own product. *We got reimbursed for mileage with each paycheck. So I actually made slightly more during S1 than S2. I left after S2.
It’s a good series. The challenge for the writers was to keep the Buffy audience and to expand the show at the same time . The first 2 seasons Angel followed Buffy. Angel became big hit for the WB network. When it was cancelled it was the second most popular show on the network.( The cancellation was unexpected but the network had grown tired of Joss Whedon, his money demands, and Whedon wanted to focus fully on movies) You will enjoy the 110 episodes and it will slowly become its own show. The crossovers are less often as the show progresses and Angel will become a stellar show on its own.
Just a kind suggestion. There is 1 watch order. Buffy S4E1 Angel S1E1. And so on and so on. I've seen both series, several times, and if you keep that "Watch Order", you'll never be wondering or confused. That is the order that is meant to be, so use it. Just a suggestion.
I wondered how you were able to watch the credits and only have two actors in them. From what I remember Charisma Carpenter was even in the first show's credits. Of course, I only watched the show via dvd originally, so perhaps they were able to include her then. Also, by that time, it was common knowledge that she transferred over to Angel, so seeing her right away, before even her first scene, was no surprise.
Are you talking about Sawyer ftom Lost. I was there that night, but have no idea if I met him as Lost wouldn't begin for another 5 years and I had no idea who he was. LOL
@@johncampbell756 Sawyer ftom Lost yh thats how its spelt, thx i was brain dead last night lol, yh i loved him on the show, i also just bought the xbox 360 game so i can see more of the island and chars in the show. it came yesterday. yh it was Vic who knowticed him first. been ages since i saw the 1st episode of angel (I admit i usually start season 2 when i re watch em for spoiler reasons i cant say atm) so i also didnt realise it was sawyer till Vic said it. but it is great when u see actors from things u liked before they was "famous" for the role we love 😁 u was there that night, lucky u. i wish i could of been about helping out for these type of shows and things.
@Doverkin I only worked on one TV show, Angel, for S1&2 only. My job was never in the budget so I was replaced by an intern. As Firefly didn't happen for another year, there was exceedingly little turnover so I couldn't move to a different position. Basically, I was hired to be the writers' production assistant. And mainly for David Greenwalt. If he was directing, I was going to be on set in case he needed anything. He was a great boss. Really good person.
Remember the phone call in Buffy? He was calling Joyce to get news of Buffy, who was supposed to be at college, so he called the house. But Buffy picked up, and he was taken by surprise, didn't know what to say and hung up. Good luck with wrapping up everything for school!
Mopey is a good word, brooding is something he's had a lot of practice at. Nope, Charisma wasn't in the Buffy credits. At the end of Season 3, Cordy's dad was in jail, her mom may have just left, and Cordy was working and poor. She'd already said something to Buffy in an earlier episode "who would want to stay in Sunnydale?" if they had a chance to leave. So apparently after Graduation she did what a lot of people do, she went to LA to reinvent herself, as an actress... Wolfram & Hart are a law firm, that is big and powerful, and like many law firms, has some shady clients as long as they can pay. Russell could clearly pay. :) The senior partners seem to be scary, if that lawyer didn't want to bother them about a new vampire in town...one that had just eliminated one of their wealthy clients...
There is no watch order for Angel S1&2. Buffy aired at 8pm and Angel followed at 8pm. That's the only order. Buffy then changed networks. A watch order may be needed then. Half the Angel writers were also Buffy writers on S1&2 so everyone was aware of the order the episodes would air. I have a lot more to add but will have to come back later. Charisma was not in the Buffy episode.
Please for your own sake.. don't read any comments on your video's *(except this one of course)* ha ha Because people (ie) Trolls Love to ruin future plotlines and all the wonderful surprises that you're going to enjoy, so much, if you don't know they're coming. Wolfram and Hart are a firm of evil lawyers who provide legal protection to monsters and demons. You will find out a lot more about them and their senior partners in later episodes. As well as future crossover episodes between the two series a fair number of characters/actors from Buffy appear in Angel either in a few episodes or for longer periods (some later becoming pretty much permanent characters in Angel).
