We were surprised how well this worked! Also, please note we said 'air' once, but then corrected that and said 'vapor'. It is the gas vapor that pulls the heat from the water.
Using an old bathroom scale is good also (but you have to be smart enough to know the weight of the empty tank and do some basic math). The weight method works well and does not depend on the outside temperature (hot or cold does not affect the weight of the tank or the propane inside of it - just in case modern high school graduates did not know that fact).
I like to use real hot water. Much more obvious where the level is. When there's about an inch left it can feel like it's empty when you shake it. The hot water method shows exactly how much and it's surprising how long an inch of propane will last.
Or just weight that thing on scale.. But yes, that hot water tell's truth as well. We have bottlles that are transparent, so no suprises when gas ends.
