Find Your Natural Grip for Great Golf Ball Striking

How strong or weak should my grip be? The answer is - however your body wants to grip it! Stop fighting your body's natural inclinations to grip the club the way it wants to. Simply put, everyone's hands hang down at their sides in different angles. This grip tip offers you a new perspective into how you can have a more natural swing - one that works WITH YOUR BODY instead of fighting it.
Square the clubface more easily with a grip that works with your body!

I have seen very few instructors talk about the natural hang of your arms. I found that out almost by accident when I started playing golf. I simply bent over and took my lead arm grip keeping my hand in the same position. It makes my grip weak looking but it is very comfortable and I hit it very straight from the beginning. I do tend to get my right hand a bit too on the top so I am taking your tip to keep the thumb folds parallel. Great video.

Different grips for every golfer. 30 years ago I started using the double overlap thinking I was the only one in the world years later I saw Jim Furyk uses it. Don't laugh I was a +2 handicap then at 65 I'm +5. But it cured a draw that sometimes got away from me. Yup different strokes for different folks.

Interesting for sure. I know when I started playing I put my left hand thumb directly on top of and centered on the grip. I just thought that was where it was supposed to go. Then "experts" telling me to overlap, not overlap. It gets real stupid real fast. I will definitely give this a try, thanks.

Good lesson. I think grip pressure should also suit body type. I'm disproportionately stronger lower body than upper. Increasing my grip pressure to about 70%, improved my game more than any other thing i've ever done....got that tip from an old Golf Digest lesson written by Jack Nicklaus who has a similar body type.

I was watching a friend of mine bowling and noticed that his ball reaction was inconsistent. When discussing this with him he informs me that his wrist are double jointed. I suggested that he purchase a bowling glove with a metal support that would lock his wrist into one position. Instantly he had success. So, not everyone is built the same. Excellent information that applies to all in many aspects of life.

Thank you, Thomas! Yes, you would treat a bunker shot just like that. You will place your weight forward and hands back - this encourages you to BLAST the ball out of the sand. Hands back - causes you to hit behind the ball. Weight forward causes you to dig into the sand more.

I'm glad to know that my teaching style is resonating well with you, Preston. I am located in South Carolina, but I have phased out in-person instruction so I can further dedicate my efforts in support of the online school. I will, however, continue the V1 Swing Video Analysis lessons as they are instrumental to the progress of my school's members, and these can be done for any student from anywhere across the globe. This enables me to put my eyes on your swing and offer some very specific observations and corrective action plans if applicable. The process involves downloading the free V1 app and then submitting two videos to me through the app - one down-the-line (captured from your stance line, not the target line) and the other face-on. You'll find more information about the V1 Analysis halfway down this page on the Saguto.Golf site: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolf And here's a link if you are not already enrolled in the school and would like to know more about it: saguto.golf Thanks! Hello and thank you for sharing your advices! Would you suggest placing the hands on the grip with the shaft in vertical position or with some leading angle? If the bottom of the club is pointing toward your left hip (righty golfer) at address then your grip will result in a stronger position even if you put the hands on the club without turning them. I mean, probably you should also simulate a preimpact position before gripping the club in order to return naturally to that point when swinging. What do you think about? Thank you again.

Hey Tom...I’ve tried about every grip there is. Currently my grip is on the strong side as I play using the Jim Venetos method. For the life of me I cannot keep my trail hand (Palm) from separating from the grip at the top of the backswing. It’s basically become a trigger for me in that If I really concentrate and keep it on I feel like I’m holding a knotty oak branch and totally screws my shot. I’m an 8hcp and manage to play decent despite this psycho nuance. I can’t help but think I could eliminate much more of my poor shots if my grip would stay intact. This happened prior to using Venetos’ method as well. I’ve considered using a grip that has a less taper to it...add some wraps to the bottom part...your thoughts please....

My natural grip is similar to Tom Saguto's. When I look down at my lead or left hand, I see 3 knuckles, but this grip also shuts my clubface slightly at setup. My question is if this is ok or do I need to use my same grip but square the face to intended target at setup. I hit my irons pretty good but struggle with driver. My issue was hooking it or overdrawing it, so I used same grip but squared clubface now I'm slicing it. I tried using my strong grip and leaving driver face slightly shut and after hitting one I bombed it.

It is important to understand that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, and common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. what am finding out about my natural grip position is that when my hands hang all knuckles show but when gripped hardly any are visible, go figure.

Tom you are a very good teacher and that’s a fact. Unorthodox is good. You’re onto to something. Golf is important. I love golf but of course I’d like it a lot more if I played better. But that’s ok. I reckon I will. And you’re helping in that department. This is a business for you. And I’m in business too. And as much as I like business, and I like it a lot, it’s not my everything. Although once upon a time it was. Here is the message Tom. The Jesus Christ deal is real. If you haven’t repented yet already you need to. Get that deal sorted out. The creator is soon to return in the form of Jesus Christ. It’s called the 2nd advert. Its going to happen. Its a done deal. Make sure you’re on His side. That’s the message. And hey, keep up the good work. You’re doing a dang great job. Might see you around one of these days.

I have the answer. However you are strongest in grip body and position to just press the head of the club into the ground gripping it and positioning your body to be the strongest just pressing face into ground. The driver get into ypur strongest grip n body position tp press hardest you can against a tire or wall or something solid. It will change your game.

Not only natural, it’s neutral if that’s where your hands hang, correct Tom?
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 2 года назад
Correct, David - as long as there's no manipulation going on and you are truly allowing your arms and hands to hang naturally. Having said that, I would like to supplement the referenced episode from my channel's archives with this more current grip lesson that speaks to the tendencies and consequences of a grip that gets to be too strong: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EneeNS3pf-0.html TS
