There are so many options when choosing a bike saddle that it can be difficult to know where to start. One of the most important considerations is saddle width. This video shows you a simple, cheap and easy method to determine your approximate sit-bone gap, to help you work out what width saddle to choose.

I think this is a good way of determining the proper SADDLE WIDTH suited for a rider...but by the end of the day, comfort is a matter of preference. Bought so many saddles in a span of 10 years...so far I am only able to buy one comfy saddle (years ago)and surprisingly it had a very thin cushion and was very cheap. I couldn't find the same saddle like it..forgot what brand it was but it was dirt cheap...totally regretted not buying 20 pcs 😂

This makes my choice for the right size saddle a whole lot easier than just buy one and hope it's comfortable, and now know how fairly simple it is rather than get a ruler and try to get a rough measure by touch/guess/mirror The method you've explained is a big help Mate Cheers for sharing 👍👍👍😎💨🏴‍☠️☮

What this is missing is how to determine which saddle width to get which I thought was the whole point of the video. So you have the distance between your sits bones; now what? Do you add a few centimeters or do you try to get the saddle that's as close to your width as possible? That would be good to know.
@podiumphysio657

Hi Marek. Choosing the best saddle for you is a challenging process and this video simply gives you a piece of that puzzle. Generally I tell clients if you have the centre points of each sit bone mapped out, then these points should be positioned on a well padded part of the saddle (and chamois), rather than on the edge. There should be perhaps an extra 1cm - 1.5cm of saddle on the outerside of each sit bone mark. However this will depend on what shape the saddle is (curved or flat) and how much "padding" your legs and hips have.
@TushhsuT
@TushhsuT 2 года назад
Look on SQ lab site - they have a cool instruction how to. And correct width for each sit position/style. Here in the video left center is way off of real center. I obtained, that majority of sold saddles are extremely narrow for me (13cm bone width). At the end I got a leather saddle - it seems to be wide enough and start to be comfortable.

Would it not be better to sit on the card whilst bent over in a cycling position rather sitting straight up?
@podiumphysio657
@podiumphysio657 2 года назад
Hi Andy. Sitting up tall will give you the widest spacing measurement of your "sit bones", which is useful to work out maximum saddle width at the rear of the saddle. As you lean forwards, you will roll forwards onto your Ischial Rami which start to narrow, matching the dimensions of a saddle (getting narrower towards the front).

@podiumphysio657
@podiumphysio657 2 года назад
Hi Herman. Personal preference is the ultimate determinate, however I always recommend a saddle that is flat front to back and from side to side, rather than curved. Some people like curved saddles but ergonomically it doesn't make sense to me.
@ChristianBorrman
@ChristianBorrman 2 года назад
what are your thoughts on geometry and TT vs aggressive road vs relaxed road / gravel vs mtb? I have pretty different measurements on the memory foam doing this!
@podiumphysio657
@podiumphysio657 2 года назад
Hey Christian. The "sit bones" are basically a V shape which is wide and open at the back and comes to an apex at the front (at the Pubic Symphysis). The more upright you sit on a bike, the further back on V you are, and the wider the gap between the sit bones where they contact the saddle. The more you lean forwards into an aggressive position, the further you are rolling forwards on the V, and the closer the contact points on the saddle are likely to be. Saddle padding and shape should reflect this. Bike geometry is obviously vastly different between types of bikes.
@ChristianBorrman
@ChristianBorrman 2 года назад
@@podiumphysio657 so should we measure for this, i.e. sit forward or just sit upright and saddle design already compensates for this
@podiumphysio657
@podiumphysio657 2 года назад
@@ChristianBorrman I believe that a standard road saddle is designed to best accommodate a rider in a standard riding position which is hands on hoods, in control of brakes and shifting levers. If you judge a road saddle from this position, it will likely also be suitable for sitting more upright (hands on bar tops) and more aero (in drops) If you only ever ride in the drops (I have one client like this), then potentially you would want a narrower saddle as your sit bone contact areas will be narrower at this pelvic angle. I believe that riders are generally better off with a saddle that is flat front to back and flat side to side, as this allows for the greatest flexibility in riding position.

You should have added to lean forward, lift the feet of the floor (as you pointed) and plant your hands on some surface in front of you to try to mimic the riding position because the upright sitting position is very far from the (road) riding position.
@podiumphysio657
@podiumphysio657 2 года назад
Yes that is a good suggestion. Sitting upright will give you your maximum sit bone width. Leaning forwards will likely show a slightly narrower width as the contact will be made further along the Ischial Rami as the bones start to converge.

Wrong wrong wrong. You don’t sit on a bike saddle at that angle. When you sit on the saddle you rotate the pelvis and the contact points change.
@podiumphysio657
@podiumphysio657 2 года назад
Hi Paul. Undeniably correct. When you roll forward into an anterior pelvic tilt, the contact points will change (narrow) due to the ischial and pubic rami converging at the front of the pelvis. The difficulty comes in working out where exactly these bones (contact points) will end up being positioned on the saddle. There are a lot of variables at play....

Thanks for the reply which I will respond to in point form: 1. You are not omnipresent. How many races are there in a year? Every year everywhere. You go to every pro and amateur event do you? 2. I don't know about you but when I have a competitive secret I keep it. 3. Pride. There are a tonne of people who won't even try it because they are afraid. A local magistrate here bought one and returned it and actually confessed that the reason why was because his friends laughed at him. 4. Lack of good info. People who have never ridden it say that you can't control your bike. Where are the reports? How come after 42,000 sold 1 and 2 a t a time I haven't been sued out of existence? Everyone should be road pizza if all that silly talk about not being able to control your bike is true. Right? Secondly, many amateurs and EVERY pro is part of a sponsored team and that includes the saddle. You are already know this so SHAME on you for acting in such a dishonest fashion! Thirdly, they think the weight of 500 grams is just too much. You tell me then... we have two guys. Same bike, same build and ability of rider. One, because of his seat has pain and numbing and therefore anxiety. He has energy going into his 'present' trauma, pain and anxiety. A great physiological drain. The other guy has a saddle that adds 300 grams to his bike but he has no pain and/or numbing, he has no anxiety. He has no physiological drain dealing with these things. His mind is clear. You tell all of us here which one crosses the line first. 5. You and many others have never been on our site and read the testimonials. I had 85 pages worth on the old site which is indexed and you can send that link to you if you wish. For now here are some testimonials from our site on the question of competition: As a road bike racer I extensively researched for bicycle saddles that would ensure prostate relief. I selected the Spongy Wonder noseless bike seat based on the other racer testimonials. The SW noseless bike seat certainly lived up to the intended benefit of eliminating pressure on the prostate. Tom. P. Michigan Hi Jeff! With the Spongy Wonder noseless bike seat I won the overall single division of the Swamp Fox in Charleston SC. At SOAR in Highland NC 2008, I won age group over 50. Due to my success several of my friends have purchased. Your revolutionary prostate relief noseless bike seat did everything you said it would. Thank you, Gary Jackson First off, I’d like to say thanks. I was told your no nose bicycle seat wouldn’t work on long rides and that it wouldn’t be as stable around corners. Yet I continue to train on it for hours at a time without a complaint. I also plan to use your no nose bicycle seat in the Ironman Canada race in Penticton this summer. Thanks again for creating a much needed product! D. Eide Hi there, My parents got me your no nose bicycle seat as a birthday present and being an ex-mountain bike racer I looked at it with some disdain albeit with much curiosity. I cannot, will not, go back to the traditional style bicycle saddles again. This is an amazingly comfortable bike seat. Comfortably riding in Montreal, Michel I am a 50+ year old road racer/time trialer who has tried many bicycle saddles with no success. My typical symptom was numbness while time trialing or riding rollers. I received my first Spongy Wonder noseless bike seat in February 2007. BY FAR the best bike saddle I have ridden. The symptoms of numbness are gone. It is very comfortable during long rides. Due to the Spongy Wonder noseless bike seat I have continued road racing and time trialing. Markus Naegeli Hi Jeff, I am very happy with my spongy wonder noseless bike seat. Last summer I put 4,000 km on my bike included three mountain bike marathons. The first two were ~38 km with 1200 m of climbing and the last was 60 km with 1800 m of climbing. The last one took me 4h 25m to complete and about the only part of me that wasn’t sore was my rear! It is a performance oriented yet comfortable bike seat. Regards, Chuck McDermott. A Canadian in Vienna, Austria Is that enough for you?

@@zeldafitzgerald4149 And you need to stop promoting single platform seats that destroy the health of the riders. Dr. Steven Schrader with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH): “When you sit on a bike the pressure on the perineum increases sevenfold. Riders using a classic saddle place 1/4 of their body weight on the perineum. The amount of oxygen reaching the ***** typically falls 70% to 80% in 3 minutes. A guy can have his oxygen levels drop 100% but he doesn’t know it. After half an hour he goes numb. Saddles with splits or holes may make matters worse because they have smaller surface areas, and hence the rider’s weight presses harder on less saddle. The arteries in the perineum run laterally and therefore they come under more pressure when they come into contact with the cutouts’ edges. It is no longer a question of whether or not traditional bike saddles causes ED, but what are you going to do about it?”
