Finding and Tumbling Garnet (First Tumbling Cleaning Attempt)

Garnet crystals are a common semiprecious stone. The garnets in this spot are in amphibolite and schist rocks. The garnets are covered in biotite and other minerals and are often oxidized, fractured and weather but you can still find decent ones in the area.
In today's video, I decided to try to collect a few garnets and test a way to clean them up by tumbling them. The results were not what I expected.
Hope you enjoy this video

Hello everyone, hope your all doing well during this weird time that were all experiencing but it will get better and eventually pass. Spring is finally here and things are warming up and growing again. I will try to get more videos out soon and I know a lot of you enjoy them and I just wanted to say thank you for showing your support and take care.

Check out rocktumbling.com They have some basic information that may help. You have the perfect landscape for videos. It's one of my two favorite states.

Cool approach, wil be fun to see how it works out long term. Glad to see the video, hope you're keeping safe. With the talk of social distancing it's nice to have a hobby that pretty much requires going places that people aren't, still can have fun without putting oneself or anyone else in danger.

Thank you. I've been really busy with college and now with other things since the virus started spreading. Its been hard finding the time to film and I'm waiting for the snow to melt in the mountains.

I got a chuckle from the "nice warm day" comment while wearing a jacket and sweatshirt. I'll take that in to account when answering your multiple choice question posted elsewhere about what region you are from. Lol.

Perhaps the one that I got from our hike in the mountains is garnet? It's shiny and I love it. 🤩 I am still searching for its value and how to clean it. Thanks for your video ☺️

My husband and I got a bunch of these little balls of garnet, I can see the garnet but it's very heavy and like you said to much minerals attached to it

I recently re-tumbled a few of them to clean them up. Eventually with some of them, the minerals will all go away revealing the garnet but with a few others they wont. Makes me wonder how they formed. They are fun to find.

Hey, nice video bro. I found one stone which is similar to the one you have displayed here, but it may not be exactly the same. I mean, i am not the expert into it. I found it near sea shore, a black glittering rock. Can you share some more literature on rocks of such types, the glittering one found near sea shore/ beach. It will be helpful.
@GeoForge
@GeoForge 4 года назад
There are a lot of different types of black glittering rocks that you could have found. I wont be able to really help you identify what you have. However, you should look up a local geologic map of where you found the rock and look up the rock outcrops in and near the area where you found it. Then you can search the internet and possibly compare pictures until you find what looks like your rock. Or if you can, you can take it in somewhere where it could be identified. I would guess that it might be metamorphic or igneous in origin but that is just a guess.

@@amythistking7474 Depends on the garnet and material. I haven't done much tumbling but for the garnets I have, I had them tumbling for 4 weeks.

Is magnatite silver? Thanks
@GeoForge
@GeoForge 2 года назад
Magnetite is not silver but instead an iron oxide mineral and can be used as an iron ore in some instances. Its color tends to be a dull grey with a metallic luster. It could be possible to find it intermixed with silver containing minerals in an ore sample.

Your belt broke?? Didn't you say you just put a new one on and used it for the first time? lol incorrect install maybe or just a shite belt.
@GeoForge
@GeoForge 4 года назад
It's a harbor freight tumbler and belt which may be the problem. I actually bought this from a yard sale for $10 and the previous owners never used it. I might have to try something stronger. I have not used it since I got scammed on grit and polish that I bought. It still is something I want to do, I got a few rocks to try it on.

@@benwolf5264 Well thats good that yours is holding up, I've heard that harbor freights items are hit and miss and yes, I am studying in geology. I'm currently in my 2nd week right now. If everything goes well, I should have my associates by the end of the year. Its going to be a little harder now to find time to go out looking for things and making new content but I'm happy that your liking my videos.

@@GeoForge Good stuff, I did 4 years in the airforce working on helicopters and now I decided to follow one of my passions and completely ditch the aircraft maintenance world. I am studying agriculture at the University of Arizona but I am really intrigued by geology and am constantly rockhounding. I have debated changing my major haha. cheers!
