Part of The Shear Zone Channel. The stunning NW coast of Scotland has historical importance for tectonic discoveries, but gaining this knowledge demands solving a geological puzzle. Join Rob as he gets to grips with the faults on the beach at Durness.

To my mind it's an incredible intellectual achievement to have worked out what happened here.

Well, back in the day, understanding only came from looking over to the east of Loch Eriboll, then applying this understanding to Durness... It's a good example, common in geology of course (and lots of other "under-constrained" human investigations), of being curious and looking outside the immediate study area as the solution may lie elsewhere....

Excellent geologic detective work! Wonderful structural geology and petrology. Thanks for sharing. Final thought, the thrust faults form such incredible complex geology. Beautifully represented in Scotland.

Thanks - yes - lots of intriguing complexity in thrust systems and the Moine Thrust Belt has great outcrops for cracking puzzles.

About to start my 2nd year mapping dissertation in Durness this summer. This will be incredibly helpful. Thank you.

Great explanations! I was lucky enough to explore that North Coast before NC500 was thought of - though did have the benefit of OU "hard rock" videos ...

Thanks. The far north is still pretty quiet despite the publicity around NC500... at least compared with honey-pots down south....

Thankyou for this great video. I love Durness. I have sat in the car park at Sango Bay many times watching people come and go. If they stay more than 10 minutes I think it unusual. Not convinced by the NC500. On a more positive note how about going to Whiten Head. I usually walk cross country from Moine House.

Thanks - it's certainly a great spot. The rocks out towards Whiten Head are great, one of the best small-scale duplexes anywhere amongst other great stuff. Things might be getting a bit noisier soon as the rocket launch pad goes in....

Incredible geology, beautiful explained and stunning video work showing us the beauty created. Thank you to do all this work and sharing it so others can understand better the ground we walk on

Great video! In 23:50 , how can you tell that the striations are not part of the tectonic process? Is it localized?
@robbutler2095
@robbutler2095 Год назад
You can see the striations "wrapping" around outcrop surfaces. And they're only found at beach level...In other coastal sites you can find them on walls....

It a nice but longer talk than before about thrusting movement before normal faulting. Can we think it is a Devonian extensional basin superposing upon a former contraction orogenic mountain environment? Is there any strike slip fault in the Moine region?
@robbutler2095
@robbutler2095 10 месяцев назад
Probably Triassic rifting rather than Devonian, superposed on Silurian contractional tectonics. There are strike-slip faults further east in the Moine - the most famous of which is the Great Glen Fault (see video on Rosemarkie). But it's not part of this story....
