Hyperion is the tallest tree on Earth at 379'. Come along with me as I find this giant Redwood.
Also, I have some nice photos of Hyperion for sale on my website www.timvogelaa... that I'd like you to see. When you get to my website, just type in "Hyperion" in the search box. They look amazing printed up on canvas and ready to hang on your wall.

Yes, leave it free of human activity (beyond maintenance from the Park/scientists), in its tranquility and silence. There are many other lovely locations to visit. Just be awed that a tree can get this high and be this old.

It's hard to believe that highest tree in the world is so unprotected, not road to it or any security around him. ...
@jmcsquared18
@jmcsquared18 5 лет назад
It's protected in several different ways. One is that it lives deep in Redwood National Park which requires a permit to explore. The permits are free at park visitor centers, but they do register several things about your identity so that you go on record. Also, arborists have placed cameras at the base so that they know what people do there and how much traffic Hyperion receives. Other than that, it's nontrivial to reach, and as you could see, the path to it is littered with some dangerous logs that likely deter people from just randomly stumbling upon it. It's not like the Grove Of Titans in Jedediah Smith where you just run right into it. You have to at least know what you're doing to enjoy it.

Please link GPS coord so I can go there and take a selfie to put on my instagram. Promise not to ruin it for all those that really care though. I joke, I wish we could go back to when these places were mostly known to locals or those that truly appreciated them, when it was a real mystery to find them and experience them.
@Rainkit
@Rainkit 4 года назад
That's the point. That's why researchers aren't allowed to reveal its location. By not bringing attention to it, they hope to keep people away from it. I honestly hope this isn't actually Hyperion, otherwise this video might have put the tree at risk from humans and their endless stupidity.
@danielcedenorodriguez9938
@danielcedenorodriguez9938 4 года назад
So you are suggesting that in order to protect the tallest tree in the world, a road should be constructed leading right to it? A road that would undoubtedly mean thousands of trees literally being killed, thousands of animals being deprived of their homes and an entire ecosystem being jeopardized? like, what? I really think you are missing the point.
@Just.A.T-Rex

Stop hiking to this tree. Y’all are destroying the whole idea of conservation when you bushwack new trails to it, use the bathroom in the general area, leave trash etc etc. so much so that now there’s a $5000 dollar fine if you’re found near it.

I know they are trying to save all the old growth redwood forests but I hope they are also having a buffer zone of younger redwoods surrounding the old growth forests in case something like a fire kills the old growth ones because even at 100 years old redwoods are still impressive trees they dont have to be over 600 or 2000 years old

This is precisely why we don’t want people in there stomping on the understory searching for these trees.......
@leechurchill1965
@leechurchill1965 3 года назад
There isn't much incentive for a lot of people to endure the rugged hike. It looks like any big redwood. And the understory can handle an occasional homo sapien's hiking boot.
@SobrietyandSolace
@SobrietyandSolace 2 года назад
@@leechurchill1965 Thankfully this video satisfies the curiosity of many so less people would make the hike themselves but you underestimate the destructive potential of footfall and people with too much money/time on their hands. I used to think not many people would bother climbing a damn mountain with far less favourable conditions and picnic spots, but many of our mountain paths are completely backlogged with litter....
@summer-c7i
@summer-c7i 2 года назад
@@SobrietyandSolace Exactly, the challenge of a rough hike can be an incentive, despite that it's shuttered down currently. But some people may still try to sneak in, or some of the area may open again in the future. "Oh, look at me! I made it!" The experience of being there, the bragging rights. "I saw the world's tallest tree! IG post, heehehehe!" Using the tree for online recognition and attention. There's still the curiosity about it, "How big is it?" There's a passion for various reasons, such as traveling, hiking or finding tall trees. There's also checking off dream locations, or "notches on a belt." And other reasons for why people have visited this tree or may want to. As far as this video satisfying curiosity, I'd hope so. But I'm also against posting videos of the hikes publicly to social media, unless it's authorized by the NPS and is for scientific rationale, such as conserving the area. The reason I'm against posting these treks is because some people can use and have used them to guess/figure out their way to the tree. I think a realistic compromise is for those who have visited the tree already before the current ban just to edit out the trek and have the focus on the tree, or post any other footage of being on the NPS' actual trails where visitors are PERMITTED to be. This way, you can still see the tree almost as if you're there, but its location is more protected.
@summer-c7i
@summer-c7i 2 года назад
@@leechurchill1965 Except apparently, there's more than one human's hiking boot that's been there, and it's more than an occasion. And apparently, the local terrain and flora can't handle these visits, as there have been so many visitors, that the NPS has completely shut down the area and $5k fine/6 months in jail to violators. Ferns near the tree don't grow there anymore, and the tree's base is getting more exposed due to trampling. This is all according to the NPS. As far as the hike being rugged, I'd agree with you. There's rough terrain, no trail, spotty GPS, no cell reception, long trek, etc. All of that didn't stop people from hiking there and damaging it. If anything, I'd think the challenge and the popularity of the tree just would be even more of an incentive for some people. As far as it looking like any redwood, I do know its base isn't that wide, and because of its height, canopy, and lower land positioning, you can't really see the top. However, most people probably don't really know that until they've been there, or probably don't care.

I still can hardly believe its that tall...even while standing there next to it, it doesn't even seem possible. I hiked up the creek way past it at first before I went back and found it. Did you see it right away from the creek bank?
@trymtt
@trymtt 6 лет назад
@@maxpatch67 I have to honestly say that I went past at first. I thought I was being diligent watching up top to know the right spot. I did try to exit somewhat past the tree, maybe 60 yards further down. In retrospect, I was only about 2 trees down. I had seen the tree, but didn't know it until I headed back. Exiting where I did was a bad idea, I climbed a fallen redwood up, and then jumped onto another downed redwood once I had gotten to the top of the bank (maybe some 60 -70 ft of tree trunk) It was old and crumbly up there and I dont suggest it. On returning, I noticed a footpath coming out to the creek- it was marked with a little flag on rebar. I touched the tree, snapped a pic, and then went back. We didn't linger or disturb the tree in any way. I had 3 kids in tow, the youngest being 6. Sooo, it still took and long time to get all the way back. This is definitely an entire day affair. Especially if you do the full trail and the hiking of the bigger creek. Was a ton of fun.

You really can’t see it unless you go up close but you pass at least a half dozen trees that are only a few meters shorter than it is to get to it. It’s not even necessary to see it. Ramil Jaropay This video is totally authentic and I filmed it myself in a the summer of 2016 while following specific instructions and images to locate Hyperion. When you see the distinctive top, it's unmistakable that you have arrived near it before you even walk the 200ft up the bank to get to its base.

Yeah, me and my wife went there in 2015. We also visited Nugget (the 3rd tallest), Howard Libbey (tallest known tree from 1963-88) and some others before reaching Hyperion. Then went on to look for Emerald Giant on our way back. They are all pretty close. So, when we were there, we took the chance. It was incredible. You feel so small and meaningless when being surrounded by these giants. This summer, we are going to go to Helios, the no.2 atm. Then we have our top3

Man, that's great! When I'm there, I can hardly believe my eyes because they are so large compared to normal life. When I tell my kids at school about these trees, I tell them that I would not blame them for not believing me about how tall they are because I hardly believe it myself and I have been there!!! Did you know that a Redwood has been found that is now the largest tree in diameter(not a sequoia any more). I think it might be 40 feet across.

The park only gives 40 permits per day to hike the trail you have to take to get to the stream you have to go up. Hardly any of the people who get a permit and hike that trail even know where to go. So they do a pretty good job of making sure the hyperion doesn't get many visitors. It sure is beautiful, though.

It's legit. Here's the thing you need to remember: The roots don't go nearly as deep as most trees but extend outwards. The radius of the roots' reach is equal to a tree's height. In this case, if you visit it, you will notice how close it is to the stream. I imagine that its height can be attributed to its proximity to such an excellent water source. My wife and I visited it last week. It's not that hard to fund if you know what to look for.

Good time! How will you know that you have found Hyperion? After all, there is not 1 specimen with a height of at least 110 meters, as well as quite a lot, perhaps hundreds, of trees at least 100 meters in height. How is it with the issuance of permits? In many strictly protected areas, they are not issued at all (rare exceptions are only for researchers in the framework of research), they simply refuse permission and that's it. Strict nature reserve. But in Russia, the fine for this is a little less than $ 100. This means being without a pass on the territory of the reserve, if a person does not cause significant harm, the punishment for poachers is much stricter! I personally go to such places with a burner, I don't burn bonfires, I put up a tent as carefully as possible. In general, it is possible to lobby for a pass, it happens something like this - let's say there is a guide who has been leading groups along a route open to tourists for a long time, in general, in this area a person knows a fairly wide range of people and for some (usually a small number of people), arranges trips to order (as a rule, they are more complex, due to the fact that strictly protected areas, as a rule, are also more difficult to access) Everything is official, but not through people, in 99%, permission will be refused. It is worth saying that those people who go to remote protected places, in their overwhelming majority, take care of nature and here, rarely do any of them burn bonfires and even more so leave anything, such settle down where it is easier to get to. I am not a sociable person by myself, so it's hard for me to get into the community of group (custom-made) hikes and I like solo hikes by myself, I walk alone on such reserves, but I treat the environment as gently as possible. In general, what will happen in the USA if you go to a strict nature reserve with a phone or Iridium trackers? Will a fine come? Or only if they are detained on the spot? In many cases, we are not very arrogant about being in the reserve (if a person does not have a weapon, he does not harm nature, does not burn bonfires).

Hey, I'm sure you mean no harm, but trekking through the brush like that causes irreparable damage. Sure, it is cool to see, but it's not worth that. This video only encourages people to do the same. When people go see trees like this they also sometimes take bark, which can seriously harm the tree, so it's not a good idea to be showing more tourists the way. This is how other big trees and tree groves have been destroyed.

The following year I did the same up the tallest tree in the UK and promised to do the tallest tree in the world. The NPS found out and told me they’d throw me in jail and fine me thousands if I tried, although I would never have done it without their permission. I’ve now performed up trees at festivals and given talks at schools and it’s become a bit of an obsession. I figure that if I can create something of high enough value, the authorities will allow me to climb Hyperion if I can raise enough awareness of the importance of our trees. I’ve got a very long way to go but it’s the only way I can go. Any advice you could give on growing my channel would be appreciated - your channel is great and so varied!
