In this video I meet up with Scotty from SOUTHERN LAND BUSHCRAFT for a traditional swag camp. We take gear that could of been found in the 1800's or early 1900's. We camp like Australian bushrangers out in the Victorian bush in the middle of a cold winter and practice bushcraft surival skills like the bow drill and flint and steel fire making.

We did this as kids. Every school holidays, our back packs would be packed and waiting at the front door. You knew , when walking up the drive way , that you were going camping, whether you wanted to or not. We took enough food , and water, baked beans ,spaghetti ,Frans steak and kidney pie, tin dog,(corn beef) and rabbit traps and we could easily stay out for 2 weeks at a time. The parents knew where we were at all times or around, there and we would trap rabbits , raid station dams and catch yabbies, play survival games and generally had a great time. The kids these days would have no clue. We would take a shoelace and wrap around the stick to aid in the friction side.
@Lukeslittletribe
@Lukeslittletribe 9 месяцев назад
Thats it hey .. I grew up much the same. Would dissapear for the day with my cousins exploring rock pools or the bushland and come back for dinner. I really want my own kids to experience a bit of that as well ... taking them camping this weekend for that very reason. It's so good when you can remember camping as a kid isn't it.

@@Lukeslittletribe you better believe it My kids are citified , Uni and work , wouldn't have a clue. my oldest one , came a few times in the bush, up to the station on the Darling, he is more into cars chics and bikes oh and his guitars. We used to go rabbit hunting , with a 22 and a Dolphin torch. Bagged many a meal. Raised on rabbit, roo, goat and fish and yabbies.

Magnificent video fellas! I really did enjoy it! I was a crocodile catcher and researcher for 9 years up in the Northern Territory. All I had was my army blanket, pack, rifle and dinghy. I was swagging up and down the river systems and working with crocs for most of the 9 years. Plenty of tucker up there. Barras, pigs, magpie geese, etc. Sharing my tea with the crocs, hahaha. You can't eat goannas there anymore because they suffer from can toads and we need to give them a fair chance to recover. But one tip, leaves of Silverleaf (melaleuca paperbark) are the best thing you can have with your fish! Just don't leave scraps around your camp, digoes can get cheeky sometimes and crocs walk long distances through the bush. I must say that the evening part of your video, by the fire, really reminded me of those great times up there. Good stuff fellas! Fair dinkum!
@Lukeslittletribe

Mate that sounds like the dream! What a life and experience you had. I've always been captivated by croc catching in the NT. My uncle 'Peter Vandenberg' (not sure if you know him? Not sure how big the croc catching community is up there?) did a lot of croc catching and lived most of his life up there. So I've always loved hearing the stories. Thanks heaps for watching.

I grew up like this and still live this way today.. only difference is I have a mattress in a treehouse these days. It’s good for the soul, waking up in nature, swinging the billy over the fire first thing. I’ve bought my little boy up this way and he knows more at 7 than most kids. Catches goannas like a pro, can light a good fire with flint & steel or condes crystals and woollybutt, knows where & how to find water and bush Tucker.. good life skills to have. Thanks for sharing and keeping the old skills alive!

Thanks Stuart. Yeah I've done a lot of flint and steel fire, but first time using the bow drill and it took me by surprise how hard it was. Mind you, everything is wet and cold here at the moment in winter so it doesn't help. Usually I do get a bit of black on the bottom of the damper when I cook it this way, but I think I got a bit lucky haha. It tasted great, despite the few rocks that got into it from rolling it on the big granite stone.

Back for a second viewing. Can you imagine being one of the original swagmen that may not of had a flint and steel yet, going without fire on cold nights because the hand drill didnt work out. 😮
@Lukeslittletribe
@Lukeslittletribe 5 месяцев назад
Cheers for watching again. Yeah I'm not sure how it would of went. No doubt plenty of bushmen have spent cold nights not being and to get fire. Though from the beginning of settler history the swagman would have had means of starting a fire with flint and steel that would of been brought over from Europe. The bow drill was not really used in Australia, as the indigenous folk used the hand drill method

It's not traditional but if you swap the swag for a US Army Rain Poncho with the Poncho Liner (Woobie) you'd have a lighter, slimmer sleep system. The poncho is a multi use item as you can use it as a rain poncho, ground sheet and a tarp shelter. For extra warmth you can add a Mylar (Space Blanket) backed tarp in between the woobie and the poncho and it can also be used as a ground sheet or a tarp shelter meaning you can still have a waterproof layer in you sleep system. This system is affectionately known as the Ranger Roll in the US.
@Lukeslittletribe
@Lukeslittletribe 9 месяцев назад
That is a great sounding settup .. I'll have to look into that.
@TheMegaAsh
@TheMegaAsh 9 месяцев назад
@@Lukeslittletribe Survival Supplies Australia sell the Helikon-Tex Swagman Roll & Poncho which is their version made using modern materials. Unfortunately you can't buy the poncho and poncho liner as one package and can it can be hard to find a poncho that will work with the liner as the USGI rain poncho is a common thing for companies to make but very few make the poncho liner so if you've got the money I'd suggest the Helikon-Tex version as it's easier to find here in Australia but if you're willing to shop around on US websites you can find the poncho and liner for cheap.....typically less than $40USD for each. Survival Supplies Australia also sell a version of the tarp I was talking about, they call it an All Weather Survival Blanket and sell it in green which would be good for stealth camping but also orange so I think the set up would be good for a day hike bag using the orange tarp so you have shelter if something happened but also have a way to signal S&R teams!

its not even 100 years ago i still camp like this learned it from the Army you are kind of conditioned to think you need a tent and all these luxuries but really you just need a bivvy bag with a good sleeping bag or warm blankets and you're good to go grew up around bushmen and veterans if im finding life a bit hard im known to just take my bow/rifle fishing rod some gear and vanish for a few weeks no one really gets concerned they know it means i need some alone time

Yeh this is awsome mate .. proper old school kit. Used to have a book as a kid called the wild colonial boy about jack Duggan the bush ranger. Loved it .. and was always interested in how the ol swaggys lived out in the scrub. I go camping a lot and incorporate a few bits of gear that are old but tried and true , like my dads driza bone , wool blankets and cow hide rugs , as well as military items. They are heavy to carry but tough as nails and don’t break and let u down .. and I enjoy them alot more then the ultralight new stuff. Mad video mate good on ya . Subbed 👍🏻 also .. where do u get ur pipe tobaccco? I’ve had trouble finding it in NSW.. and well bloody done on gettin that bow drill fire goin at the end .. awesome ai 👏🏻… edited again .. actually bro I think my sub just got u to 2K ! Yesss! Good on ya bro 👍🏻

Cheers mate, thanks heaps for subbing and pushing me to the 2 k mark 🤣 Yeah I love all the old stories and history as well. If your into that stuff 'the bush' by Don Watson is a cracker of a book that has interesting history of the early days. The old gear is fun to carry as well .. and yeah a bit heavy but when you just grit your teeth and bare it, does fine. I get my pipe baccy from an online store in Vicco called tobacco blends and they have a real good range.
