If you are looking for an island adventure in the Caribbean coast of Colombia, look no further than the beautiful Rosario Islands just off the coast of Cartagena. From luxury resorts to simple eco hotels, these islands really do have it all. I stayed on the main island which is called Grand Isle at Secreto Hostel. There are a lot of different beaches to check out, go snorkeling, kayaking, biking and just disconnect from every day (quite literally, there's not a lot of cell reception here!). The green fruit you saw is TOTUMO, also known as the Calabash tree... The shell of the totumo fruit (often referred to as being gourd-like) was traditionally used by indigenous people, after being dried, to manufacture essential items, like water containers, kitchenware and musical instruments. Its also used in Colombia as an ingredient for cough syrup.

@@AlinaMcleod a place like islas del Rosario were set up to keep them wild as they are, the owners don't want golf fields or expensive 5 stars resorts, just Eco friendly and disconnected as possible from the tough dependence on electronic gadgets.

Ok girl, I have 2 and a half weeks holidays until March and after watching your Bogotá, Cartagena live stream and video, I am now 100% convinced of visiting the country. Having studied Spanish and using it during the last 12 years and in love with Latin America, it will sure add to the great experience. I have read that Colombia has improved its image a lot during the last couple of years and I am very glad about them prospering and being a much more modern and peaceful nation. Can't wait! Finally I highly recommend Monserrate in Bogotá, Salt mines in Zipaquirá (bear to Bogotá and home of our Tour de France champ, Egan Bernal) Salento and Cocora valley in Quindío, Guatape In Antioquía and Cartagena as well.

If you want a real island experience in Colombia go to San Andres 🤗 you’ll find the real Colombian island experience rosario island is gorgeous but san Andrés is the unbelievable experience

Hi Alina! The Coral Islands of Rosario (Corales Islas del Rosario) are among the most distinctive coral reefs off the Colombian Caribbean coast. This island archipelago was designated as a Natural National Park in order to preserve and protect the coral reefs and ecosystems, including numerous species of rare seaweed and animals. Thus, there is the emphasis on more modest green or eco-tourism, minimizing carbonization, less technology. Enjoyable video, Alina!

Honestly, for me, this is what the charm of the island is. there are not many places in the Caribbean left like this. This is what we were used to in the 70s. Quiet, raw; a place that will engulf you in chilliness if you spend enough time there. And I can appreciate the deterioration of the reefs in this video. As a kid, I remember them as bright with many bright colors and much more variety of tropical fish. Glad they are working on restoration. As always, great video.

Absolutely love your music choices! Such a beautiful place and glad that you showed it to us! At times, we do feel very claustrophobic (at least myself) when I'm cut off from the inter. That's when we realize how addicted we are to the online world. But, at times it also feels good to be kind of off the grid (digitally). Definitely peaceful and more enjoyable!

@@rudofinfante this really depends on the people. Last night I spoke to a girl from Spain who likes cold places and would like to live in Norway one day, a country a highly recommend to her. She was not too fond of hot places. As for me Norway is amazing and I'm from a cold country too but get sick a lot when it's cold and it also badly affects my mood. However this is not an issue for some people it seems, for example if you see Jonna jinton videos. She will not move no matter summer or winter and in comments many people say that this is the kind of place and life that they would like to have too

Hello there again, glad you were able to enjoy. As for the WiFi situation, yes, its pretty bad. Definitely a place to unplug for a day or two at the most. Now if you are still looking turquoise water and better signal, and WiFi options everywhere, then San Andres should be looked into as well, while you're in Colombia. Absolutely beautiful global region Alina! This doesn't surprise me, because i'd always heard from my South American friends, as to how beautiful Colombia is & when i arrived there, i was simply blown away! Actually it's funny, because just recently via BBC (from memory) a Colombian professional was discussing the pros of Colombia, both historically & in the present & her information for the novice, was truly eye opening. I recall her also mentioning Colombia's great literary culture & it's largest library in the capital city, La Candelaria, Bogotá, Luis Angel Arango Library receives approx 5,000 daily visitors, which is quite astounding! I so loved walking through the library & was simply....Wowed! I have heard of late, from various reputable sources, that Colombia, although still having it's fair share of issues, is really moving forth in a much more positive way. This relates to crime and the poverty rate, etc;, although obviously life is still very hard for many. Obviously almost all countries possess their own social end economic issues, so Colombia's not exempt whatsoever in this regard. I pray for better days ahead for all Colombian's and for much better equality in every way across their beautiful & precious country. I would so love to revisit more of South America with my beloved someday, so too, Colombia again. I just love the people of these global regions/countries. I send my love and best wishes to the beautiful, kind, hospitable & humble humans of Colombia and across South America. The plant is called Totumo, When it dries like a coconut we can make artesanal bowls, spoons… actually Colombian Maracas are made out of Totumo. My grandma used to make cough syrup from Totumo too

That fruit is Totumo. People made spoons, plates and liquid containers out of the shell. Some of them have interesting shapes carved out in their surfaces. It would have been a nice souvenir if you had found one.

Alina, I love that you’re not so “uppity” that you are unwilling to do some “roughing it” in lesser developed island resorts and towns. Yes, that seems a way to get away from it all. We used to tell kids at camp that they couldn’t bring out their technology (phones and radios) during the week. Wanted them to focus on “nature sounds and sights”. Withdrawal symptoms! LOL. I’m wondering how the island receives its power or electricity, and internet? Underwater cables? Power plant on the island somewhere? Solar or wind, with battery storage? That is a Totumo Tree , very popular in Colombian and the Caribbean , , i went to that Rosario Island many year ago ,, that same place were we are , is beautiful .. great videos Alina ..

I love Colombia,the people are very friendly.You do have to put up with the persistent street salesman pushing their goods,just keep walking.

I am Colombian born, my last stay at Cartagena was in July 1962. Base on your video that island is great to visit, but security in any part of Colombia is an issue. Thanks for sharing and good luck while you there!!!!!

The fruit hanging from the tree may well be either, Totumo (most likely), possibly although unlikely Arazá, Nispero, Curuba or Corozo. I've actually tried 3 of the 5 & they were very delicious. Colombia's actually got a great variety of unusual/tasty fruit, which are very healthy & nutritious & to the very welcome surprise of many newcomers to Colombia. Most tourists/visitors find these fruit so interesting, amazing & even intriguing! Ps. I really love the cool & funky music playing within this video!

Hi Alina. Hope you are doing well. Islas del Rosario, Isla Fuerte and Islas Del Viento De San Bernardo are rustic islands and basically very much on the all nature side. They are not allowing these islands to be developed to the point where there are paved roads for cars and buses because then they'd lose their charm. I've been to them all and they ate EPIC. You will find a few motorcycles 🏍️🏍️ but that's it and there are no real paved 🛣️, just dirt paths or some concrete paths within a small village on those islands like Isla Fuerte. I was there last year in November. The people on these islands are quite if not very welcoming. On Isla Fuerte 90% percent of the population is of african heritage. The wi-fi or cell phone 📱 data signal does really suck but you get to disconnect from the life if being glued to your mobile 📱 or laptop 💻 screen.
