I had a Classical Education at NYU YEARS AGO before most colleges jettisoned this method of education. It has given me both the moral and educational background to keep sane in this increasingly disregulated world. Love your channel, respect your cause, and look forward to watching 2024 along with you!

I'm very grateful for your channel! I'm a man who has made many mistakes and one of my biggest regrets is not giving myself a classical education. I only wish some of our current educators understood its importance. At 40 years old I look forward to exploring the classics in the new year!

I am certainly going to be following you because your journey echos mine quite a bit. Since covid started, I have read Paine, De Tocqueville, Mill, Boetie, Epictetus, Lucretious, Orwell, Thoreau, and several others. I am excited to see you take on Stoicism, though, I have to say that I am a fair bit more impressed with the Epicurians. I also find Parmenides fascinating, and am transcribing his remaining work in full into my Common Place Book. If you are wondering, i am a D&D playing, truck driving, husband and father of three in a small rural town with an addiction to coffee and gardening. Heres to 2024 being a year of even greater awakening and enlightenment.
@The_Cause
@The_Cause 6 месяцев назад
That is a good list to read through. I have read a little of all of those except Lucretious. I will admit I have not finished De Tocqueville yet. It's a husky one. I truly appreciate you watching and glad to hear that people living out in the rural areas are getting more invested in this type of literature. Cheers to your family brother!

Great channel. Love your subject. It was a few years ago that I came across the Harvard Classics and the concept of the five foot shelf. It inspired me to create my own five foot shelf, which consist for half of books from the stoics and about stoicism. Continuous self improvement is the driving force behind all this. I subscribed and look forward to your videos and discussions of the classics. I wish you and your family a very happy new year and all the best in 2024.

I completely agree my friend. I have been thinking about doing a video on that. Men who are strong mentally, physically, and emotionally are becoming very rare. Looking forward to future videos! I have a copy of Gibbon’s great work on my shelf as well. It is a masterpiece of English prose, and was one of Winston Churchill’s favorite books that helped form his philosophy of life. It was said he could recite whole sections of it from memory. All that said, it should be noted that many contemporary historians think that Gibbon’s analysis of why Rome fell is incomplete at best

man starting the year with over 6k subs that's a lot of questions to answer with probably a video for each one but idk when you're gonna get to those because you said you committed to the rest of the 50 and then went btw I've got these 50 others haha any plans on the order? like grinding out the rest of the 50 and then starting a new focus? it's a good thing you have coffee for the mornings after dealing with a newborn lol those are solid categories and I'm not gonna spoil them for anyone skimming the comments I'm curious to see who and what you reference when participating in the conversation only conflicts from that same time period as the books? like what Bolivar was up to? so when it comes to running is it more about what kind of shoes or simply reducing time spent sitting? when you grind coffee does it get all over your shoes? that might be one of the funniest ways to get rid of the wet shoe smell coffee and chocolate conflicts would be interesting to hear about! but idk if those tie together quickly enough on environment did you mean nature or just a house where people don't gift people food they are allergic to? if you can get 26 of us to run a mile you can challenge us to a marathon where we discuss Philippides lol lets hope they retreat slower than your coastline "duty to safeguard things for future generations" free to feed the homeless or virtuous enough to let them in our homes? dude you're already crushing 2024 with a midnight upload xD

HIGH reccomendation for Michael Parenti for an alternative perspective on many of the western classics and what their impact on the culture was and how its shaped thinking. If you ever want to do a series on how empires ended, and how modern ones exist, he's great. "Inventing reality" is a great book on the history and effects of mainstream media, but all of his books are incredible. "The Assassination of Julius Caesar: A People's History of Ancient Rome" is also incredible if you want to stay more in ancient history and get an history-from-the-bottom-up perspective.

Looking forward to everything, but the Roman Empire series in particular. I'm currently reading a biography of Julius Caesar, and nearly half the book was setting the stage for the empire by going through the history of the republic and its politics. It's wild to see how things turn out when they could have gone a drastically different way simply by changing one tiny event. Sometimes life and history really do balance on a knife's edge.
@The_Cause

Definitely agreed on the importance of literature, reading, classics, knowledge, memorization and not just stupid hoops under the title of formal education. United States has been on a downward slide for the past 40 years and obviously many things contribute to that. We lived in Europe for eight years and it definitely wasn’t any better there which was a huge disappointment to me. So despite all of its faults, the United States still represents one of the best hopes that we have because of it access to information and it’s international influence. If we could simply help people get over their commitment to being stupid, then we could certainly advance the entire world.

It's good that The Federalist Papers are part of the Harvard Classics, but I recommend first reading Catherine Drinker Bowen's Miracle at Philadelphia, a narrative history of the Constitutional Convention, and Pauline Maier's Ratification: The People Debate the Constitution, 1787-1788. Those book establish a context for understanding what the authors of The Federalist were responding to, or which arguments they were trying to head off.

I'd like to add a suggestion for a series for your children. "My Book House" is series of 12 books with some of the world's great literature for children; from nursery rhymes to modified Shakespeare. The edition my mother raised me on, included a volume on how to use the books with children, activities to do with kids, and suggestions for other ways to educate your family. Here's a link to a bit more about the books. I passed my set along to my oldest son and he used them with his children and has now passed them to his eldest daughter who will be getting in March. (PS I homeschooled my 7 kids and he homeschooled his 4.)

Thanks you so much for sharing your story and knowledge! This is so good and the reason why I wanted to start this channel. I am hoping we can homeschool like you mentioned and be successful. Do you look back and regret anything or are you happy you chose that path? Truly appreciate you watching and have a blessed weekend!

@@The_Cause Yes. I would allow my kids more freedom to make messes and explore their interests, along with the "formal" curriculum. Kids, especially very young ones, are natural scientists. They must rely on their senses to learn about the world around them. Blowing bubbles in their juice? Let them - then hand them the paper towels to clean it up. My 3rd son (about 3 at the time) would not believe me when I told him that the stove was HOT, don't touch it! I finally allowed him to touch - highly supervised and NOT the burner - and he believed me after that.

Consider using the word ‘eager’ rather than anxious, it provides a cleaner path forward. Forget the anxiety!

Love that! I remember reading a book by C. S. Lewis where he discussed the importance of choosing words and how much it matters. This is a good point to remember. Thanks for watching and have a blessed new year!

I’m looking online for the complete set and the best I can find is used to 1960s edition for $660. Is there somewhere I can get new copies? And is it more affordable?

The Harvard classic is 52 volumes with 2 volumes being lectures and an index. There is a digital set on Kindle that has 71 but I am sure how they came up with that number. The great books are currently at 60 volumes. It gets confusing. I found the Harvard Classics set of mine on Facebook marketplace. I paid $375 for my set. I see them on eBay sometimes as well.

I have a question for you. Your collection of the great books of the Western World? What does this entail. Is this something like Harold Bloom's western cannon? I was just curious as to the size and who has chosen these books you are planning to cover... eventually. 😅📚
@The_Cause
@The_Cause 2 месяца назад
The Great Books of the Western World were compiled by Mortimer Adler and his team. Its is a 60 volume series that covers almost every influential work in western literature. I would highly recommend looking up Adler. Such an amazing guy and passionate about learning. Hope all has been well my friend and stay blessed!

In case you have any insight into the topic then I would like to hear about the difference between the French and the English revolution. Why did the French do it so violently and in which way did the English manage to avoid that violence? I ask that because you said you may cover other revolutions besides the American one.

I like your channel and what you are doing is great, classical literature is the only sane place left in our world. I wanted to ask you if you are a fellow Christian, it's fine if you are not I'll be watching your series anyways, I am just curious!
@The_Cause

I am. The Harvard Classics seem to be heavily skewed in the Christian direction and to keep the conversation engaging I may play devils advocate some and challenge beliefs a little. But all this is to further my understanding of these old texts. In a couple volumes I will be going through the confessions of St Augustine. I will try and keep my opinion of faith out of it so as not to sidetrack what he may have believed or thought. But Christianity is going to pour out of these episodes in many ways because of the content. I truly appreciate you watching my friend and hope you stay blessed!

From my perspective, the Great Books of the Western World end with Darwin, Nietzsche, Freud and Joyce. I’m excluding Marx because it didn’t really work out with his ideas in practice in the 20th century. With Darwin, there’s no divine creation. With Nietzsche, no god(s). With Freud, no free will, and with Joyce, no happy ending. Unfortunately, the Great Books end there, but with Heidegger, there’s a way out; there’s a cause. Welcome to the New Year, Rob!

Man reading this has me pumped. I have read enough to know what I am missing and after I feel in all the foundational texts in the Harvard Classics I want to move into Nietzsche and the other moderns. Sadly, I realize it will probably take a few years but all good things take time. Thanks so much for watching my friend and stay blessed!

What exactly are you looking for and what are you trying to achieve? If it’s just all around getting you started on a solid path I can’t recommend “Atomic Habits” enough by James Clear. I have listened to the audio version on double about 4 times. Usually once a year which helps me get back on track. Depends on your focus though.

“Liberty and independent thought are in a state of retreat……”. This is an assertion made without evidence or logic to back that up…… 1. Within the last 20 years, my liberty has expanded…. As a gay man, I can marry who ever I want regardless of gender…. 2. As a resident of Maryland, I can smoke weed recreationally legally, 3. Abortion will be codified into the state constitution next year protecting women’s access to women’s healthcare…. 2. I have always been an independent thinker and do NOT see anything changing that… As you can see, it is NOT safe to say that liberty and free thought is in retreat and do appreciate when assertions are made, they are supported with data, evidence and logic..
@The_Cause
@The_Cause 6 месяцев назад
It is great that you see it differently. Often times this is because personal experiences allow us to see the same subject in different lights. For some, liberty may be increasing while to others it may be retreating. This was an intro video to go over topics I would be discussing in the future. I will back my points up with data and examples in future videos. Independents thought for me, is realizing that you may see the world differently and live in a different geographical region than I do and I can hear your points and be happy for you. My goal is not to belittle or tear down others but to find a common ground we can all share. I am not against you I promise. I can feel the tone of your comment and I think if we were sitting down having a cup of coffee together it would be different. I hope you have a blessed new year and thanks so much for watching!
