Finding Rock Treasures Along the Yellowstone

Come along as Chopper and I, Montana Rock Mom, find rockhounding treasures along the Yellowstone River. We find agates, petrified wood and a really unique claw shaped fossil! I suspect this fossil was once a type of marine cephalopod.
The circular piece of petrified wood I found is very rare. It contains the very center, or heart, of the tree. How cool is that! There are a few river agates I found in this rockhounding adventure that I am quite proud of. Lots of banding and colors in the agates.
Looking to learn about Yellowstone River agates? This is a publication from 1972 by a man named Paul Fry. This was the very first literature I read when I was learning about Montana agates. It is called "Meanderings of a Montana Rockhound" and it is priceless:
pdf4pro.com/view/meanderings-...
Here is another page with great information on Montana Agates by Jim Landon called "Montana Agate: The Best Catch on the Yellowstone River" :
www.rockngem.com/montana-agat...
For all those asking, I do not sell my rocks. As my supply permits, I do rock trades. So, if you have some nice specimens you think I would like to add to my collection, we can trade via any size flat rate post office box. Or, if you are an artist or have something else you think I would like, that's an option too! Please be patient as I have lots of emails and sometimes miss some. If you are wanting to purchase some Montana rocks, I have listed the Stores below of two fellow Montana Rockhounds KatyDidRocks and Theo Kellison, great friends of mine.
As far as places I rockhound, greater than 90% of the time I utilize PUBLIC fishing access spots on the Yellowstone river. KatyDidRocks has a great book out on all the places us Montana rockhounds like to go on the Lower Yellowstone River:
www.etsy.com/listing/1089523180
While you are there, check out her store! She has some fantastic Montana rocks for purchase.
KatyDidRocks Etsy Store:
www.etsy.com/shop/KatyDidRock...
Also, if you follow Theo Kellison on RU-vid, another fantastic Montana Rockhound, he has an Etsy Store with rocks for sale as well:
www.etsy.com/shop/SticksandSt...
Thanks for following and Rock On!
Best of luck on all your hounding adventures.

Thanks so much for the 🎥. A rockhound, lapidary artist and silversmith, myself, I was totally drooling over your finds ❤️🤯. I would be in heaven and floating on cloud 9, if I was able to find such gorgeous pieces. Wisconsin is not nearly on the same level as Montana. You put together your videos in a spectacular manner. I so wish I could take home such fabulous finds. I can’t wait for you to put out a slabbing video. Those videos are so satisfying. Excellent filming technique at the beginning there. I like that you're getting to the point of being able to identify the type of tree the pet wood is coming from. I know that's not often possible under the best conditions. Loved that wonder stone! When you get a chance, do a quick read on the Tyndall Effect, you'll like it. What a good boy!!! Replacing a rock hammer is way more expensive than a box on Milk Bones, just saying. Awesome as always, thank you. ps, I sent an email your way a couple of days ago, I often get sent into spam because of the address, it's a gmail address starts with "tan" and ends "05". I am NOT trying to reach you about an extended warranty.

It's funny you must have tons of that mustard yellow jasper to pass it up for the bumpy coral like quartz instead. I think I know what you like above all else though. The inclusions. The little things that make the Nazca lines in a solid jasper of many colors all twisted up like some nature's quilt. Patterns on the colors. It is the most desirable of the types of rocks most hounds prefer. And it's the sort of jewelry grade material that always has a buyer.
@MontanaRockMom
@MontanaRockMom 2 года назад
I do love inclusions. I love multiple colors. I love veins of chalcedony/agate running through. I love patterns. I love rocks that stand out from the others as "different." There is a ton of yellow jasper here! It's very nice quality, however, if I don't restrain myself my backpack would be full in the first few minutes of my hike 😉😊

It is! I learned about it from KatyDid Rocks. It is more powerful than a simple spray bottle and helps get quite a bit of the mud and dirt off so I can see my finds better.
