Steve and Judy, it was lovely being invited on the HH because you two have such an awesome RU-vid channel. We loved discussing our plans with you and value your opinions. We really enjoyed spending time with you both and learned a lot about Sailing, RU-vid, and adventures. Thanks for the friendship and this lovely video of our journey. Heidi 💕

I watch so many sailing channels and 1 thing to know about the HH cats is they sail in very low wind. its easy to depower the boat. the advantage is if a huge storm is coming and you have to move fast you can move up to 20 knots but most would depower to 14 knots. On a hh50 14 knots is like 8 knots on a lagoon or another boat not made for speed. Also upwind sailing at 29 degrees is huge. Right now HH is the choice cat to buy. I seen the hh50 sail 4.5 knots in 6 knots of wind. Yes sail not motor sailing. I also seen it go 8-10 knots upwind at 29 degree with 12-14 knots of wind. Now the new ones have hybrid diesel motors and over 4k of solar so no more propane.

Amen DC! I always find it funny that people that never owned a Cat give opinion on things they know vey little about.

Just this weekend, I was at the memorial service for a friend of mine whose wife got seasick. He loved sailing and their honeymoon was a large rental catamaran, touring the Grenadines. They were trying to escape a hurricane and to get into a safe harbor, had to fight 7 foot waves for about an hour/5 miles. She didn't even noticed any seasickness as she womaned the helm for that and he ran around taking care of all of the emergencies.

Thanks for showing us around Seth. I have to say that the more I learn about the HH the more I like them, even though I’m a monohull guy through & through. We actually have friends here in Montenegro that are cruising an HH50 so we’re going to get the low down from them this week on what it’s like to live on. I think I might be eating my words saying it’s not really a cruising boat! Looking forward to seeing a 44 in the flesh.

@@svfairisle Good to hear! Don't forget we also sell the Ocean Cruising version of the boat you toured, which is designed to be less of a racer and more of a cruiser (no hull flying in that model!). If you liked the quality you saw but don't need all the carbon fiber, that OC boat is one to check out. Same with the HH44! Good luck!

A Catamaran in Europe is an odd thing as moring is a daily occurrence, you can hop off every day if you want to. It's more of an entertainment area. But in the Pacific I found most people opted for a Cat so it will be interesting seeing how you guys find Ocean living. I actually like the 4 bed, 2 bathroom and communal central area these offer with friends and family.

I have had two FP's but if I was rich an HH would be fantastic, I have lifted a full during racing( not on my FP's) and it is excilliarating to control the boat when you do. Love the Saona though as a really good cruising boat. The only issue I have axperienced with cats built in the last 20 years is the lack of quality qorkmanship, squiking and acking seams to be the sound you hear in a seaway, however not when you go from the production cats to the expensive ones! Tabbing all bulkheads and interior funiture is what makes for a solid and quiet boat under way. Our older FP's was like that that. The newer FP's are not" Like all the other charter boat production yachts, buy an older one and have fun.

Some yacht, but I would and continue to look for a mono- hull as it would be better for my needs. There are about four cats. at my local yacht club now, they are all stern to and moored on the eastuary, tide in ,tide out, dry then wet. shallow draft a definite advantage, NO large fee's for being hauled in and stored on the hard, then put back in in the spring.

Jason & Nikki, from Gone With The Wynns, have in their most recent episodes featuring Ticket to Ride, underlined why their choice of a HH as a cruising cat is an excellent choice. I'd have to agree with them.
@svfairisle
@svfairisle Год назад
it's a great boat no doubt , I'll be interested to see what they think over time. Like everything it's a compromise. The lovely 'champagne sailing' in 10 knots of breeze is a great thing but it's not necessarily a relaxing way to sail... if that breeze picks up just a bit then they will have to jump to action to do something. If a proper blast comes out of nowhere then it's all hands on deck to stop yourself getting in big trouble. Personally for me if I wanted a cat to blast around on holidays and weekends it would be great, to cruise full time? well I'd need some convincing.

i think the HH is a great cat, speed if you want it and the ability to sail instead of motor in light winds. speed is safety on a long passage, gets you out of bad weather more. sail it conservatively is the answer if youre intimidated by it, you have the option. if you do your homework they arent much more expensive than the slow, heavy, poorly built production cat, they should be twice the price but they arent.

@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665
Take a look at the Windelo cats.. novel construction materials Basalt, performance and space and Green construction, power options.. For two ladies looking for maximum space look at the Broadblue Rapier 550 for a really space and radical design. Carbon fiber is expensive and energetically a disaster it also can cause corrosion problems as well as conducting electricity.

I think I heard you say dryers in all in one units don’t work, and I agree if they are not ventilated. I have now switched out Splendide non vented units for Splendide vented washer/dryers on 2 boats, and in both cases have been very satisfied with the vented ones. Best, Maldwin Drummond
@svfairisle

Yes agreed, sorry if that wasn't clear, it was just a passing comment, but it's condenser dryers that I think don't work well.

If you have the money I guess you can buy what you want but.... these boats are super technical and Sailing itself is pretty darn challenging. Not sure how much boat time they have but I can't help thinking that the HH would be going all in from nothing. They seem quite capable people but I think they are better off going for something more manageable as they have done.

Assume this channel will never endorse a catamaran as a world cruising sailboat, given most/virtually all catamarans have twin rudders that are unprotected by a skeg or hull - and that's been stated as a fundamental cruising boat requirement. Unless maybe some builders could design sacrificial rudders and one that allows a damaged rudder to be easily isolated so can be used as a backup? Is anyone aware of builders who have done this?
@svfairisle
@svfairisle Год назад
It's part of the reason we dont have a cat. Catamarans do tend to have easier ways of disconnecting the drive between rudders though if one takes a bash and the bent shaft seizes the whole system up. I guess thats because the linkage is more on show between the hulls and not buried in the stern. Also a hit that breaches the seal with the hull isn't going to sink the boat with two hulls. Ive asked the same question about which designers are putting some effort into coping with these inherent design weaknesses myself, water tight bulkheads, sacrificial rudder sections, pull pin linkage separators etc. Will be interesting to get some of that info
@TheSailingFamily
@TheSailingFamily Год назад
The HH rudders are protected by the daggerboards, which are lower than the rudders at their highest point. Second, the rudders on the HH are full Carbon, even the shaft, so they are far stronger than your traditional design with a stainless or aluminum shaft. Third, there are two rudders in a catamaran so far safer than most monohull designs. And finally, the rudders are very easy to drop in and out on the HH, and some owners even carry a spare "shallow water" rudder that could be used as a back up. Thanks for watching!

The prices of the HH cats are outrageous, especially as they are made in China. Essentially, you're paying Ferrari prices because your friends have Porsches. Also, the bed situation because of the skinny hulls would be a deal breaker for me. Most people are never crossing oceans. They will end up coastal cruising or in the Med, island/marina hopping or in the Bahamas/Caribbean, island/marina hopping. Paying 2-3 times as much as other cats that will do 80% of the same job, but will be better from a comfort standpoint, is a waste of money.

@@svfairisle I agree, absolutely. I'm talking about the overall cost of the boat vs labour costs. I'll take Asian wood workers' attention to detail over the French, any day of the week. Of course, I'll also take solid wood joinery over these crap veneers that are on million dollar + yachts as well! There is no possible way that all of these overpriced boats with veneers, are going to age as well as solid joinery.

The HH50 we went on was the first boat my wife liked. You guys poo pooed the fact it's built in China. But its hard to fault. If you think it's overpriced then build one to the same quality at the same price. I like the fact that it has the ability to go fast. Not everyone wants a Toyota
